it was honestly a miracle the ice finished 5-5-0 this week, considering steve mason’s 10.10 GAA.

Congrats SSFF — My goalie put up a 1.30 GAA and .9535 sv% this week, and I lost both of those categories to your guy.

Sounds like when we played here and Luongo posted a shutout and 1 goal game for a .5GAA and something like a .979 SV%. That was his best week so far this season.

When the 19th team as far as total points is concerned plays the 1st, and comes away with a 4-5-1 week, the 19th team feels better about themselves.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

Theo’s turd early in the week killed my save% and GAA. Marty gets the start over him from now on.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME??

knee high to a duck was going to have to outright drop kiprusoff sooner or later with luongo coming back to full strength. instead, he gets TOEWS straight up?? this was after stealing mark streit and scott hartnell in lopsided trades. people, please stop dealing your stars to the team that’s chasing me in the hunter division.

The Price for Hartnell trade was pretty lopsided in retrospect, but wouldn’t have been bad if Price had continued to play like a goalie who believed in himself instead of reverting to form. Brown is skating on a power play with Anze Kopitar and in a league where power-play goals are double counted, that matters. He puts a lot of rubber on net, too.

Kipper is a valuable asset and the real coup was picking him up off of waivers. I couldn’t believe my luck when that happened, but there just aren’t that many players on my roster that I would waive Kipper to keep.

Besides which, K_C took a huge bite out of me when Luongo injured himself and my skaters decided to suck that same week. The final score in that match was 0-9-1. I think you’re safe.

You’re just an asshole. Don’t defend yourself. First the stars align and you get a huge week against me then you just shit yourself against K_C and bury me in the Labre division. Nobody likes you, just live with it. You don’t have to respond and try to make everyone think you’re so smart.

haha hey i wasn’t accusing you of anything. i didn’t veto either trade. on the face of it, kipper for toews is almost fair. but the big picture is that most teams in our league can’t afford a goalie on their bench, and you traded for two early-round skaters using retread free agent goalies…both of which you would have eventually dropped. price and ward will probably be FAs for a while, and whoever picks one of them up will likely drop another starter.

i don’t hate the player, i hate the game trading partners who could have easily waited to grab price/kipper off the waiver wire. IMO, no way brown keeps up his pace…but that’s just my opinion—certainly a defensible trade from the goats’ side. i happened to have been lusting after streit myself when he walked over my team in a head-to-head.

Oh, I know. I laughed out loud when I saw the headline and just thought I’d give a little of the reasoning. I had a crisis on a school group project the night of the draft and had to go afk and autodraft the rest of the way after the 4th round, so I’m still trying to repair the damage from that.

Some players just won’t move – Del Zotto is a rookie and Gaborik is a walking injury report. I thought very hard about drafting him myself and just couldn’t bring myself to do it – so much upside, but so much downside. I’ve been trying to move Barker since the second week of the season and I haven’t gotten so much as a response from any of the 6 people I’ve sent emails or proposals to.

i’ll let it be known: i’m willing to trade anyone on my roster. the problem is that most of them are on the downswing in terms of value (MDZ and gaborik the exceptions, but the drawbacks are duly noted). backes, brassard, avery all getting less and less ATOI right this moment. the rangers are really the only reason my record is where it’s at.

by Natty Bumppo on Nov 17, 2009 5:50 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

That’s what I think should happen. If only one team can make it from each division then the schedules should be heavily weighted towards in-division games.

No to Yahoo. I prefer ESPN for a billion reasons – and one of them is customization and how many free league options you get. Half of the stuff we get for free at ESPN we have to pay for at Yahoo. Also, when making the league, I looked at putting the schedule that way, but we still would have had to play some teams outside of the division twice, and I didn’t know how to fairly do that. Also, it took me 7 hours to put together a custom schedule for a 6 team league, so I wasn’t prepared to do it for a 20 team league. This is one of those things that I feel we could use a “meeting” on at the end of the year just to evaluate what rules need changing (in my opinion, I want to eliminate ATOI stat and add a goaltending stat, change the scheduling, and maybe look at divisions. I know other people probably have other issues. I think we were going to talk about keepers, but I’m not going to push for that one).

Regardless, it’s been fun so far, and I’m going to go and put my entire team on the trading block. At this point, Magi can’t get much worse, as much as that hurts to say. And Price for Hartnell looked so much better when I was looking at last years stats.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

by Whiter Mage on Nov 17, 2009 6:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Adding another goalie stat is something we should really be careful with, imo. I had no right to go 4-6 with Gould’s Grinders last week, but Kiprusoff went bonkers and pulled me at least one more category and two more standings points than I deserved based on the rest of my roster. Same thing against My Jokes Getzlafs, Luongo pulled off an amazing week and I pulled a tie out of a matchup that should have rolled mine.

I know I would have drafted differently in the first few rounds I participated in if I had known we were going to have keepers, but I wouldn’t scream too loud if that went through. Thank you for running this, by the way.

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 17, 2009 7:06 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think the only other goalie stat we should consider is shut outs. It is really frustrating when your skaters dominate but the other team’s goalie makes the match-up a draw, but isn’t that more like real life anyway?

i’m okay with another goalie stat if we also add another skater stat (short-handed goals seems right after reading F&B’s earlier take).

Yeah I’m with you. This is just the first ride of many. We’ll work out some kinks in the off-season. This is the first ESPN league I’ve done; I’ve done a couple Yahoo leagues. I didn’t manage any league so I don’t know what free/pay stuff you’re talking about. I just get the sense that Yahoo understands hockey much better than ESPN judging by both the default stats and the autodraft rankings. Again, I really appreciate you taking the initiative to get this going. Don’t lose sight of that amidst my bitching.

If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...

Nothing lost~

Having never run a Yahoo league, I am not 100% sure what all they offer. I do agree they have a better autodraft system, but I feel a bad autodraft ranking system is good – it encourages you to show up for the draft, or at least pre-rank well, or you’re done. But that’s bad too, it’s double edged.

The one thing I know we get for free is live game tracking. I know for a fact Yahoo doesn’t offer that. The other thing is if we did want to take it to a keeper league form, ESPN offers that free, and Yahoo wants you to pay for it.

Also, I had a really bad experience with a Yahoo league once where I was locked out of a public league for “collusion” because a Flyer fan took Ovechkin, and I told him I’d give him my first and second pick for Ovechkin and his third. Three people got mad, which is enough to perma-veto a trade in Yahoo’s public league, and their admins basically said “tough shit”.

Granted, Wysh was pretty cool when I met him at JR’s trophy party, and I told him since I haven’t gone back to Yahoo except for his blog. He said he was sorry, and told me who I could email to potentially fix it. I haven’t yet, but it made me feel pretty cool about him. Also when he said “I can’t wait to have admin powers over my comment section.”

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

i’ll back WM up that ESPN gives you a TON of customizable features (including the schedule). all the scoring categories especially. as the commissioner of my football league, the front page is also really cool. gives me a chance to write up league summaries and include animated GIFs and youtubes and the like.

by Natty Bumppo on Nov 18, 2009 2:04 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

even though ATOI has been killing me recently, i really like it. specialists that accrue PIMs are fine, but i like that it has to be balanced with playing time. and it’s the one stat that really increases the value of the stud defensemen. brent seabrook on my team, for example, would be pretty average if ATOI wasn’t considered. but he’s a stud in real life, and ATOI helps translate that.

totally understood about the difficulty altering the schedule, just wanted to check in. in general, i don’t think it’s a big deal that teams will not all play each other. it doesn’t happen in the NFL, for instance. next year i think it would be totally okay to randomize who you play outside the division and ensure two or three games against everyone in-division. there are enough smart people around here, i’m sure we’ll figure out something that works for everyone.

by Natty Bumppo on Nov 18, 2009 1:59 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

ATOI also adds a cool element of strategy, at least for my team. if my opponent’s roster has a high average ATOI, i’ll often give up on the stat and play avery each game hoping to score Gs, PPGs and PIMs. i can also play avery with no fear if my opponent has a low average ATOI. if my opponent has a middle-of-the-road average ATOI, i’ll watch how the week progresses, see how many PIMs i have, and decide whether to start him accordingly.

I didn’t like it at first but I think I’m a fan of ATOI now.

I also like that ATOI gives greater value to stud Dmen that aren’t necessarily fantasy studs. And in addition to balancing the high PIM guys, it also creates a tradeoff for some of the older PP specialists like Guerin and Tkachuk. I think the stat should stay in in the future.

I’ve long thought that TOI was an underrated stat in real life, and I really like it for fantasy. NHL coaches might be misguided at time, but they’re rarely fools, and TOI is a good reflection of what they think of their players.

I have to agree that i have grown to like the TOI too, makes it hard to manage who scores but doesn’t play a ton of mins (Holmstrom) with a guy like Ryan Whitney who just racks up the min on d. Also I’m just gonna throw out there that I think a keeper league would be cool (which may be affected by how amazing Doughty and JVR have started the year)

You actually choose at the end of the year whether or not to have keepers, I think. I had said I wanted to have this start off as not a keeper league, but yeah, it’s one of those things to talk about. I kind of want to see what a full season holds before making commitments for next season now.

I agree we shouldn’t make the decision now, I was just having a little fun. Can you change the stats from year to year in a keeper league? Because as good as my situation would be if we went that route I think I’d rather fix some of the settings and draft over.

by Killer_Carlson on Nov 19, 2009 12:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

technically you can choose at the end of the year whether to make it a keeper league, but because it changes everyone’s draft strategy so markedly (i.e. tavares would have probably been higher, for one), it’s something the league really should be aware of on draft day.

if for no other reason than the dominance of AO, i’d like to see re-drafts each year so everyone has a chance to own him at some point. these are all things we can take votes on or devote fanpost discussions to, which is why a public league linked to japers’ rink is especially rad.

another thought on the possibility of switching to a keeper league in the future:

with a 20-team draft, it’s a pretty huge advantage to have a top-5 pick as opposed to a bottom-5 pick. even with the ladder format, it’s inherently better to choose earlier in rounds 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 than it is to choose earlier in rounds 2, 4, 6, 8, 10.

and especially in hockey. i felt i had no choice but to select a goalie at the beginning of the second round because i wasn’t sure if an everyday starter would fall to me at the end of the 3rd (with the notable exception of craig anderson, that was basically true…hiller and varlamov were the goalies drafted in round 4). which means i have a lower-tier scorer and have to wait until near the 60th pick for my second skater, while a team picking top-5 can wait until the 3rd round and still get a regular guy in net (nabokov, ward, kiprusoff, huet).

this isn’t really to complain about the formatting, because (1) obviously there’s only so much that can be done, (2) a capable owner can still find amazing deals and make a run at the league title (i.e. top picks don’t assure you of anything), and (3) the order was luck of the draw, everyone had the same chance.

but if we’re going to switch to a keeper league, that first draft and the outcome of the first draft become hugely important. basically if you get ovechkin or malkin in a keeper you’re set for years and years in 4 or 5 different categories.

so my 2 cents:

  • either completely re-draft each year with random draft orders, giving everyone a chance to move up or down from year to year (and allowing more than one lucky soul the chance to own AO).
  • or if we are set on making this a keeper league, using an auction format to pick players, so that teams aren’t penalized year-after-year for a disadvantage in the first season’s draft order. basically, everyone gets to decide value for themselves, and everyone gets a shot at every player. there can be no complaining afterward. the issue with an auction draft is that when you have 20 individuals, it seems unlikely that we can bring together 100% participation…which is basically a necessity when holding an auction.

thoughts?

Familiar Rapports: Bald Pollack, F&B, Gould Old Days.

Lobbies: Osala, Perreault, Erskine, Pothier, Neuvirth, Flash.

Fan of: Mean Lars Backstrom, Line Mashing, Cake.

ovechwin, why is malkin on your bench tonight? and why do you only have three defensemen on your roster?

and whalers, afinogenov is on your bench even though you’re only down a single assist and a goal heading into the last night of the week.

Wow, I lost my GAA matchup this week by .001. Must have come down to a slightly longer delayed penalty. Crazy.

Did the Sharks lose this week? Maybe Nabby got pulled for the extra guy for a short time? Either way, wow.

Nah, the Sharks won both games. Both of our goalies played 2 games and gave up 5 goals total. I can’t think of it being anything other than Nabokov being off the ice for just a little bit longer for a delayed penalty.

Not sure on the date of this. May have been posted before. I think after the Pens game on Sunday it's been thrown out into the open about media bias. I actually don't mind McGuire, but I can't stand Milbury. At least they know our feelings towards them.
Video of Mike Milbury's "Hey Ovie, I'm still your daddy" comment (~4:55 on the clip) during the first intermission of Sunday's game. Thanks to YouTube user HockeyHaven76.
