I was sad to see CBo leave, but it has been oddly satisfying to watch Pensblog writhing in agony. Their Twitter feed is just a world of pain. Here’s a statement from their Bruins game recap:

We will not do a traditional recap until Chris Bourque scores, retires, or is sent to the minors.

And on. And on.

Poetic justice, in a way? We spend 1,000+ posts discussing the loss on waivers to Pittsburgh, and they hate him.

by gfcaps fan on Nov 16, 2009 9:04 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Side Note from a Pens fan:

We all don’t hate Bourque. Just the Pensblog. I hate when people stereotype Pens fans based on the Pensblog.

Bourque looked out of place at first, because he was trying to do way too much. The past 2 games, he has really simplified his game, and he has looked much better.

He’s also a 4th line player picked up on waivers so what did you expect? I guess PensBlog just needs something to fill their day while their not at the track critiquing the Special Olympians sprint times. Douche bags.

Not to me. Sox were only occasionally good enough for their to be any type of drama late in the season until recently. Late 70’s/early 80’s there was some sizzle but besides that I never thought of those teams as big rivals.

To Red Sox fans they have always been. But only recently to Yanks fans. It’s like back when the Cardinals were in the NFC East. They saw the Cowboys as their rivals. Cowboys and their fans would beg to disagree.

Nah. Yankees fans always loved stomping on Boston. Even when the rivalry wasn’t as heated (read: slobbered on by the WWL) the Yankee fans wanted blood. It’s not anything like Cardinals v. Cowboys. It’s like any NFC East team and Cowboys. No matter who is good or bad they hate each other.

As both a Sox fan and Caps fan growing up, I’d compare it to a more heated version of Pens-Caps than something like Cardinals-Cowboys. The two teams always met on big stages even if the Yankees always won. I also agree with F & B that Yankees fans always took pleasure in stomping the Sox. That’s why 2003 was such a big deal for them.

by Kolzilla on Nov 16, 2009 10:44 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

2003 there was a World Series trip on the line. Since the late 90s when the Sox got good there was a reason for NYY fans to be so spiteful. But even when the Sox weren’t a threat the Yankee fans loved to beat on them. It would be like Caps fans taking joy in stomping the weak teams in the SE (if only we could). (And on a side note, if/when we do stomp CAR I will take childish pleasure watching it.)

If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...

As a Yankees fan since 1986 (my earliest memory of my grandfather in a Yankees cap), I’ve always understood that the Red Sox were the ‘bad guys’ in the equation, insofar as a young mind simplifies sport like that.

It’s been a few interesting decades, for sure. I enjoy the rivalry.

The two teams always met on big stages

Maybe I missed something but the term always implies frequency. What big stages are we talking about here? Last I checked the Sox were at best a mediocre franchise for a large chunk of their history. Minus Bucky Dent my mind does not fill with dozens of images of Red Sox vs Yanks tangles. Heck if its Boston I’m more likely to conjure up images of Bruins vs Habs, Cetics vs Knicks, or Celtics vs Lakers.

I feel like it was a smart gamble, but he got burned. I figure Peyton is a coinflip on a 70 yard TD drive in two minutes and the two yards that ice the game was better than a coinflip, especially when you add the odds that they don’t score with the short field due to an interception, fumble or good defense.

I cheer for the Colts more than any other team, so Eff Belichick, but I think that was the right call.

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 16, 2009 11:46 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

4th and inches at my own 28? I think about going for it.

4th and 2 at my own 28? I punt the ball and play field position.

If he makes it, everyone’s calling him a genius today…its just the way the game works.

Ron and Fez 11 to 3

by YvonLabresMoustache on Nov 16, 2009 11:52 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

But his offense had been tearing the Colts apart. If we’re talking three yards and a pile type football, I would agree. But Brady was having a hell of a game, along with Moss.

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 16, 2009 11:53 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The distance thing makes it that much more risky. If its inches, all they pretty much have to do is get forward progress, and its a first down. Two yards is too long (ha) a distance in that situation. Hell…I would have a hard time going for it on 4th and 1 at that spot.

Ron and Fez 11 to 3

by YvonLabresMoustache on Nov 16, 2009 11:57 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I mean, it’s not a sure thing at 2 yards, but it’s definitely not a sure thing that you stop Manning with 3 timeouts and 2 minutes to play with. I still think he made the right call and the cards just didn’t flop his way.

by Knee high to a duck on Nov 16, 2009 12:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

There are enough variables in punting the football in that situation that makes it much more desirable than going for it. Let’s say the Colts rough the punter, or the punt returner drops the ball or fumbles during his punt return, not to mention all the potential variables when the Colts offense got the ball back (fumbles, interceptions, 4 and out). I think it would have been a much better choice to play the odds than to give them the ball at your own 28 yard line with a ton of time left.

Ron and Fez 11 to 3

by YvonLabresMoustache on Nov 16, 2009 12:06 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

All of the variables except roughing the punter and a fumbled return still apply during the 30 yard scenario and going for it on 4th and 2 gives them a chance to draw the Colts offside, since they have to sell out to stop a 2 yard gain.

I think Belichick was playing the odds, which is what I’ve been saying all along. It just wasn’t the traditionally conservative play.

Angels/Red Sox before this postseason comes to mind as well. I bet it happens more than we realize, especially in sports where 8 teams make the playoffs in each conference. I take solace in knowing that throughout most of this one-sided rivalry, the Pens have clearly been more talented.

Have you ever watched the man try to cleanly catch a pass? He has never done it in his life. I like Dupuis, but he has hands of stone.

Dupuis is a cool, French name that would be good for a star player. Every time he muffs a pass, I mutter “Ohhh Doopers.”

The name Dupuis reminds me of when I was learning French back in high school. One of the sentence constructs we learned was “Dupuis quand…..” which translates to “Since when”. So Pascal’s last name essentially translates to “since”.

I call him Pascal Dupuis “Quand”.

Jamarcus did hit Heyward-Bey in the hands yesterday in the 1st half. And just like he did with the ball Gradkowski threw it at the end it didn’t stay in his hands. Not that any of that was somehow new. He’s not even the best rookie wideout on his own team. Murphy is making 1/10 the money and is 10 times the receiver.

After two weeks in Grand Rapids and seven days after clearing waivers, you’ve got to wonder just what the hell Nylander’s end game is. It’s seems to be pretty clear that he still considers himself a productive NHL player and doesn’t want to go the KHL unless it’s an absolute last resort. I’m sure, in his mind, he feels that if he leaves North America for Russia, it’ll be the end of his NHL career. So, in that sense, I guess I can’t blame him for stalling. But at some point, he’s got to realize that now that he’s not even practicing with the team, every day that he delays his value to even the KHL is rapidly decreasing. So in case you’re reading this Michael at the local Potomac Starbucks, let me spell it out for you:
1. Nobody in the NHL wants you
2. Few teams in the KHL want you
3. You’re not getting any younger and the value of your two week conditioning stint is rapidly fading in the rear view mirror
4. Your family is in Sweden and all your kids would like to see you play and Stockholm is a lot closer to Minsk than it is to Washington

I know you didn’t ask for this situation, but it’s here and it’s not going away. If you do well in the KHL, you can always try and hook up with an NHL team next year. But this is 2009 and the time has come to actually make a decision. So cut the cord, pay the bill at the Hotel Six and head over to Mother Russia to do what you do best. Enough already.

YNC – Nice use of Canadian singer known to date a hockey player or two.

JP is right. Michael has always been shown to not exactly roll with things. Definitely likes to be in control more than most I’d reckon. Of course, then again who doesn’t if they can be. He carries all the cards except playing time right now.

I could understand his reluctance to move to the KHL if it meant giving up the dollars he’s due from the Caps, but that’s clearly not the case. Hockey players always say they’re so lucky because they get paid to play the game they love, yet Nylander’s philosophy seems the opposite. He’s getting paid yet he won’t play unless it’s exactly under the right conditions. I guess at 37, it’s just a business to him now.

by b.orr4 on Nov 16, 2009 10:13 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If it was just business I think he’d have been in KHL even before now. I think this is about control as JP mentioned mixed with a little stubborness.

It’s his livelihood. Also, keep in mind at his age this may be the last stop for him. I think people who aren’t pro athletes or work around athletes seem to have a hard time fathoming that this is a career as well as a passion. A career that ends early in life relative to most other careers.

He has an NHL contract next year no matter what. He can go play in the KHL and still is presumptively in the NHL next year.

presumptively

That is the key word. I think you;d be presuming a lot. Given the contract situation I don’t see it being realistic unless he puts of huge numbers in the KHL. My understanding is that if he comes back to NHL his Caps deal would still be in place. Am I wrong about that?

A man gotta have a code

by CP2Devil on Nov 16, 2009 10:41 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Nylander isn’t Radulov, so if he went to the KHL, it would be the same as if he went to the AHL, another year off the contract. Presumably, any loan would be for the balance of the season only, so we get to go through this next summer, only the Caps would be free to send Nylander to Hershey immediately and thus, not a problem in relation to the team cap.

"No TV and no beer make Homer go something something."

by apk3000 on Nov 16, 2009 10:49 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No, you’re right. He has that Caps deal, but without the NMC. That means he comes back and either gets traded in the NHL or gets stashed in the AHL. If he doesn’t want to get stashed he needs to be playing to get trade interest. What he’s doing now isn’t opening any eyes.

I still don’t see much interest in him in the NHL next season. His salary number will still be fairly high. One thing I could see is a deadline deal as a rental player. Problem is he couldn’t play in KHL at all next season for that to be possible. I don’t see the Hershey scenario coming to fruition next year as its not advantageous to either sides wants or needs. Not saying it can’t happen, but I’m extremely doubtful that it would.

A man gotta have a code

by CP2Devil on Nov 16, 2009 11:18 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Hershey isn’t the only option. The Caps could assign him to Grand Rapids again and he’d have no say (though DET would). He could have interest from a cheap rebuilding team, maybe one that needs to reach the cap-floor. His cap hit is significantly higher than his salary so an owner that cares more about real dollars than cap dollars may be intrigued.

I think you are reaching. GM’s who need to hit the floor seeme to have found better options in the last year or two than players like Nyles. Like I said before its possible, just extremely unlikely in my mind. I think at a minimum Caps would have to agree to take on half his salary if he were to get dealt prior to the season.

He wants to impose more contractual obligations on top of contractual obligations. I can understand not playing on some backwater team – I really do. He has balls, and I cant blame him, really. This is just part of teh nasty divorce proceedings.
Personally, I have felt that at some point, SOME team might be forced to sign him due to injury (and the injuries to key players are unbelievable this year) and may roll the dice on paying him for the balance of this season, and playing the buyout/waiver roulette game for next year.
So – this isnt all bad. The downside is that we will not be getting a top 2 shutdown d-man in that deal – it would be just too perfect.

From what i’ve seen on my travels on 95 every day, it seems like its a 4 lane type of deal (two on each side). Doesn’t seem big enough to handle any significant flow, plus, the whole toll road thing doesn’t sit well with me. I can see the backup getting onto it affecting my drive home significantly.

This seems interesting too. Via Wikipedia:

The ICC will be a toll road, though there will be no toll booths and no cash toll collection. Toll collection will be either by way of E-ZPass transponder, or by video imaging of registration plates of vehicles not equipped with a transponder.11 Vehicles lacking a transponder will be charged an additional fee of $3.00.12

Makes no sense to me. Are they going to force people to get EZ Pass? Are they going to MAIL people payments?

Depends on the frequency of the mail. If it comes once a month, it’s probably a net gain over having a toll attendant. Now, whether it’s a net gain once you factor in maintenance of cameras and the initial cost, I don’t know.

Heh. If it helps confirm the decision, I picked Flash up after his first game back, and I’ve been getting really good offers for him ;P.

I picked up Perreault after his first game because I had a slot, team’s already strong, and I like him. It’s paid off nicely.

I picked him up when he came back in my league because he’s listed as a RW/LW (Sedin’s injury and Cole’s injury f’d me pretty good).

He’s been money in everything except for +/- (a -4 last week hurt)

Grab him, if his #‘s crap out when Ovie gets back punt him away… but I’d hold on to him for a bit, let him catch his groove.

So. If Ovi is back, does he reclaim his “A” from Poti or BMo?

IS PЯACTICE NOW.

Mo

definitely Mo. The “A” hierarchy goes something like:
Ovie/Knuble
Poti
B.Mo
(god willing, injuries will not force the caps to go further, but then its probably a toss up of Bradley, Laich, and Nicky)

Well, the Caps are 1-for-1 when Bradley wears a letter.

Bmo’s solid play on the blueline during the PP may provide the opportunity for us to finally see AO get some serious time down low on the PP.

are the worst callers to any NHL Home Ice show, and that’s saying something.

So if what LeBrun is reporting is true, Chicago is close to deals with both Kane and Toews, which would leave Keith the odd man out in the salary situation. But as the PD article points out, if they can move Buff or Sharp, they might be able to squeeze all three under the cap.

Any ideas on how much he gets on the open market? I can’t imagine anything less than $6 million for a defenseman of his caliber, but he’s still an RFA until the end of next season, so he may only want to sign a short-term deal pending his unrestricted free agency and potential major payday.

If Semin isn’t signed long-term (or at all) at the end of the season, do you consider tendering Keith an offer sheet with Semin’s money, or trading picks/prospects for his rights? Once again, the assumption is that neither Sharp nor Buff get moved, but I think the scenario is interesting. I sure would love to see Keith skating in Caps red instead of the Chicago sweater.

I’d take Keith, Sharp, or Buff, pending return compensation.

At least for now, +/- is a meaninfgul stat

Live it up, Carlson and Alzner are tied for the lead in +/- in the AHL. Both are +14.
