lets bring back THE WAVE
I loved the ol' Caps Center back in Landover. The noise meter, the infestation of birds in the rafters, the dense vampire fog while driving up 301 to the game.
One thing I used to see at just about EVERY game back then was watching some group of guys start THE WAVE. We n ever see this anymore? WTF. I mean really.. it's not THAT lame. For those of you who used to go to all the games at the old arena... I know you remember how much fun it was.
Of course.. the few times where someone COULDN'T get it going, they looked like an idiot. Maybe that's why no one starts waves anymore. They're too afraid of looking like a tool.
However.. I AM not. For I am a tool and proud to admit it. So next game if you see some dork, scruffy 30 year old with glasses in the nosebleeds trying to start a wave... no I am not having a seizure. Stand up and confront your tool-ness and join me and lets RECLAIM THE WAVE!!!!!

Most of us who pay for a ticket go to actually watch the game.
If you want to do the wave, pay $5 for a Nationals ticket. Lord knows no one there actually cares about the team.

hey now, some of us love baseball for the sake of baseball, and, believe it or not, actually follow the Nats. (everyone, do yourself a favor and go to a game. Nyjer Morgan is a little ball of energy, and a WHL alum!)
and $5 tickets are not for the wave-it’s more like a “cover charge” to go hang out at the bar for 3 hours.

You people are robots.
I guess with the advent of the cell phone, people are too busy txting each other to do anything interesting during breaks in play

no, during breaks in play I’m usually discussing what just happened with the people in my section. Because I’m lucky and the people that sit around me are all STH and fellow puckheads.

The notion concerns me, honestly. Those TV timeouts and breaks in the action can be very short, sometimes unpredictably so, and I would be beyond annoyed if a wave reached my section just as an offensive flurry was reaching the other team’s net.
I do plenty of interesting things during breaks in play — watch the bench, check the out-of-town scoreboard, scope out the folks who work while we’re having fun (using binocluars to check out the spotlight operators on the catwalks, or the journalists in the press box, is one of my odd hobbies).

You’re no fun.
And you also pay to sit there and pick your nose during those 3 minute breaks where they scoop up all the ice? Not like it takes long to get a wave goin’

The main thing I miss from the CapsCentre is the decibel meter. I’d much rather have that then the fake, crappy graphic of the crowd noise.

Since I’m apparently not the only one that feels this way…every year I’ve been a season ticket holder at the phone booth, I’ve let my ticket rep know my feelings at the end of the year. Maybe if enough STHs speak up something can be done.

I miss the Wave too. But I feel like it was left with oversized plaid shirts in the ’90s.

not supporting the wave making a comeback. In total support of bringing new things in, such as the (count number of goals)…it’s all your fault and any other chants from the old days or any other college hockey game chants we can bring in….

I like the wave, but have never been to a hockey game, so I don’t know how that would fit in.
However, a hockey game is exactly 60 minutes of action, but you’re in the building for roughly 2h30. I’m sure if people can cheer during intermissions for a mascot doing its things or trying to get a free t-shirt or any other dumb stuff they have to try to entertain people, I’m sure a minute or two of the wave during a TV timeout wouldn’t kill anyone.
What american sports need, though, (in my opinion of course), is actual singing or chanting during games, that brings the passion out like nothing else. “Let’s Go Caps!” and “MVP” gets old in a hurry, the “all your fault” thing I find kinda lame and way too short to be any kind of anthem. A real anthem like any English stadium (I recall the ode to Cantona at Old Trafford and think if someone could come up with an anthem like that to OV that would blow the roof off). I’ve never seen, in any sport, a crowd singing in America (or Canada). There is a lot of noise, but it’s disorganized, mainly cheering, so it dies out after a 10 or 20 seconds.
In 1972, Canade fans in Moscow began singing their national anthem during the last game and that was one of the most memorable moments for all of them.
But maybe that’s a football or european thing.
by benjik on Nov 14, 2009 1:40 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
benjik, let’s commision a Capitals song. I’m a huge fan of that. Hard to call it a football or european thing when Habs fans do it.

In my wildest dreams I imagine using the power of the internet to start up some Caps songs and/or chants and getting together a section to do them at games.

It would definitely be great. The only problem is that it would take decades before we could actually get a lot of the crowd to sing in unison, let alone know the words.
by bigmac1124 on Nov 14, 2009 4:05 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I dunno the god awful “it’s all your fault” chant for EVERY GOAL seems to have caught on. FYI if anyone on this site is one of those chanters…that chant should be reserved for a minimum of 4 goals and ONLY if the Caps are winning.
by Yoshietree on Nov 14, 2009 9:17 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
I’ll just throw this out there at my own risk:
I’m sorry I don’t know the Habs fans did it. Do they have an actual original composition or do they use an existing song with made-up lyrics? or are you referring to the “Nana hey hey, goodbye” they use agains Boston in the playoffs (which I find cool because it must be so gut wrenching for opposite fans).
For a Caps song to catch on, you either need to have a real good song writer to come up with a great tune, and wait for years to build around it, or go with an existing tune and find some lyrics, which is much easier, but very easy to make it become really lame if the lyrics are too straight-forward.
So I’ll make the first proposition: USSR/Russia anthem with adapted lyrics for the Caps and/or Ovechkin. Now I’m a huge USSR/Russia hockey fan, so I would find that awesome, but regardeless, that anthem is very powerful (as in a crowd chanting it gives you goosebumps). The fact it would be sung in the US capital would draw a lot of publicity and would make people aware of it, so if people were willing, it would catch on very quickly. Of course, it would be weird at first and maybe not appropriate, but hey, it’s an idea. As an added bonus the Caps would definitely win a large chunk of the Russia hockey population as fans (if that wan’t already the case).

Singing or chanting during games should be left to snooze-fests like ‘football’.

singing, chanting, and bands are very college hockey. Which I love, but not what I’m looking for at a Caps game. (though even I get going with the counting and “It’s all your fault!” when the Caps get to 4 or more)
by RedBirdie on Nov 14, 2009 2:33 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Looking really quick, and with a quick skim revealing nothing, I’m pretty sure that in college home teams have a higher winning percentage than in professional sports (I know it’s true in Basketball and Football). And while, yes, it’s not the same, this is pro hockey, and not college, but I’m more rabid about the Caps than any other team or college.
I feel like there’s a growing feeling throughout the league of “They just follow that horn guy to tell them when to cheer.” and to an extent, that’s true. I feel like things like the Whoop and “It’s all your fault” give us some degree of originality, and singing and chanting would go a long way towards giving us something other than “That horn guy” in terms of fan energy. Granted, media and others have said we’re such a loud arena, it’s hard to play (Sorry, Karl). But imagine if it was focused.
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

That last sentence says it all:
Imagine if it was focused.
Instead of having people wooping, cheering, yelling, waving towels incoherently, they all sang in unison.
For anyone not convinced or have never seen it, you can look up on google
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1I_crD6Oqsw
that’s in an open stadium, think it in a closed stadium, at the beg of a game. And that song came out of nowhere, it’s not even that good.
I couldn’t find a great video about Cantona in google, but it’s really simple and very short (ooh ahh ooh ahh ooh ahh, Can-to-na!). MU fans even sang La Marseillaise in the stadium, in England, and they hate France, they just loved Cantona.
All right, I’ll stop babbling on, but if anyone has good ideas of chants, let them post, maybe we stumble on sthing.
by benjik on Nov 15, 2009 9:14 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I’m totally with you. The “it’s all your fault” chant is totally original, and it makes me forget about generic things like the wave. I’m all about the crowd doing crazy shit though, so if someone started a wave, I would join in…I just wouldn’t make an effort to start it.

See the button labeled ‘actions’? If you click that button, two options come up: Rec and Flag. Rec is short for recommend and it’s something you click if you strongly agree with a post, think it’s funny or approved of the reasoning. If a post gets 5 recs, it turns green so everyone can see how amazing/hilarious/appropriate/subtle/whatever it was at a glance. It’s like a built in ‘+1’ button, so you don’t have a bajillion posts all saying ‘+1’ after a particularly good point.

To address your question above, it’s not an either/or choice. Some fans will probably continue to throw hats on the ice for the shootout, but this wouldn’t exclude the wave. Similarly, it could be that neither happens – they’re independent events. The hat throw is also not germane to the point you’re bringing up in this post, so I’m not sure why you mentioned it here.
