Anyone up for a 13 round shoot-out?

I would personally prefer a regulation win.

I’d rather a tie than a 13 round shoot-out. No gimmicks for tonight.

Win pleez, but if a Gimmick it is, then we won ours and they lost theirs.

Advantage: us.

Goalie

So is Varly the goalie because Theo was so bad last time an Varly was breathtaking? Makes sense to me but didn’t Bruce say that he wasn’t going to go with the hot hand earlier in the season??

by Bman21212 on Nov 13, 2009 5:13 PM EST reply actions

Varly was going to get this nod before Theo’s last start because it’s a 3 in 4 situation – Theo was supposed to get the first and last, I assume, and Varly the second. It has nothing to do with the last game.

You forget that CSN insists on forcing Maryland sports (Ravens, Orioles, and University) down our throats.

by Whiter Mage on Nov 13, 2009 6:55 PM EST up reply actions

You really think CSN forces the Ravens and O’s down our throats? I think they force the Skins down our throats way too much. Since they lost the contract with the Ravens and O’s, they barely do any features on them.

I’m not complaining about Maryland, though. ;-)

Orioles, yes. It’s always looked to me like the Nationals play second fiddle to the Orioles for dumb reasons (Of note, I’m a Cardinals fan). Also, Ravens seemed to get a lot of coverage. I wasn’t aware they lost their contract, but in the past, it always seemed to me to be Maryland-Centric, and frankly, so is MASN.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

Don’t watch much ESPN, to be honest.

by Whiter Mage on Nov 13, 2009 7:06 PM EST up reply actions

You got it! I’m in production, so I control all the TVs. It has it perks. Like the fact that I get to chat with you good folks while I’m watching all the games. But the downside is I’m a STH and not at the game. haha

by terpgrrl on Nov 13, 2009 7:08 PM EST up reply actions

I choose not to watch MASN. I feel like Anita Marks is the only original content they have and her show is based out of Baltimore, so I get the O’s/Ravens/Maryland thing. You have to expect Maryland coverage though. It’s one of the biggest local programs.

I actually preferred CSN’s coverage of the O’s and Ravens to MASN’s coverage now. I find that they do a good job of splitting O’s and Nats coverage, despite not having TV rights anymore.

by terpgrrl on Nov 13, 2009 7:07 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t just base it on TV, for what it’s worth. WaPo is crazy pro O’s, and seems to avoid the Nats.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

by Whiter Mage on Nov 13, 2009 7:08 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry, I’m in Bmore so I only read CI and the Bog on WaPo.com, so I can’t comment on that.

The Sun has zero Nats coverage, and barely any Caps coverage. They don’t even have a hockey tab in their online sports section. You have to go to “other sports”

by terpgrrl on Nov 13, 2009 7:11 PM EST up reply actions

WaPo dropped their Os beat writer position, and no longer does a weekly Os baseball chat (any Os chat, actually). They don’t ignore the Nats, heck, Boz had a column at the top of the sports section today devoted 75% to the nats (and 25% to “Ted, I’m sorry, I was really really wrong, you were right, and now the Caps are awesome.”)

Although Nats coverage isn’t what it used to be since Svrluga went to the Skins beat. (sad)

by RedBirdie on Nov 13, 2009 11:37 PM EST up reply actions

You’re on the same page as me — for favorite baseball teams. I’m primarily a Cardinals fan but also root for the Nats and O’s. (Now I get more torn in loyalties during Cardinals-Nats games.)

What I am hoping is that the things the guys have worked on and learned since playing without Ovie help expand the team’s strategies when he comes back, rather than have them fall back into some less than useful habits.

Btw, on the PP without Ovie. I think the rest of the unit stands around too much and doesn’t get the nice puck movement we’ve been seeing in his absence going. If you can continue that WHILE bringing Ovie back into the mix it could end up looking like the #1 PP unit we all know they can produce.

People don’t like “This” because it just takes up space and doesn’t add anything. Normally you see the rec and you can tell when people agree with you. That won’t auto refresh like the comments so all the recs that have been dropped since you opened this thread are still “0 recs.” In that case I think it makes more sense to use “This” because it gives the visual tip of agreement that normally “X recs” provides.

by bigonetimer on Nov 13, 2009 9:03 PM EST up reply actions

Here’s a crazy suggestion. Yes, I’m the first to admit it’s crzay. If we wanted to bring Ovi back comparatively slowly (and not give him uber minutes upon coming back), put Ovi on the third line with Perrault and Clark. We’ll then get to see what Perrault does with real talent on his line. Voila, three scoring lines. (I would have said, leave the “top” two lines alone but we have a vacancy since Knubs is out. Maybe put Fehr in Knubs’ place.)

Or course, we still put Ovi on the power play (maybe not at the point.)

We’ll move Ovi back to his customary spot once his “feet are wet” and/or when either the current 1st or 2nd line needs a spark.

Seems like the writers for the teams we beat always gush. W4E at litterboxcats loved us as well. Maybe, just maybe, we’re kinda critical?

of course we snipe at every little thing. We want perfection. However you don’t need perfection to win the Cup. You just need to be better in 16 games.

Fight, you time-wasting figure skaters!

We just have high hopes, high standards, and just a tiny bit of paranoia.

I thought the Caps did to Minnesota what Pittsburgh did to the Caps in the ECSFs last year. Forechecked them to death, got a ton of chances and made their goalie stand on his head. It appears the role players are improving.

Saying that implies the Wild actually has offensive weapons. Let’s wait until March/April before making those. Let’s hold off making some of those comparisons.

Woah, I’m just saying that’s what they looked like tonight. The Wild may not be potent offensively but that doesn’t mean the Caps weren’t excellent.

by Kolzilla on Nov 13, 2009 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

I agree they played good defensively, but it is November, and it is the Wild. I liked a defensive game they played against a very good Rangers team this time last year, and it meant dick in the end result.

Great backchecking by the forwards in the third period. The Wild had very little room to operate. Not a whole lot to dislike about tonight’s effort.

that might be the most satisfying W of the year

all lines solid, no dumb penalties, good goaltending, great effort all-around…tough, hard-nosed, no-frills victory, and we didn’t even blow a lead. a bit tense at times but these are the type of wins that build character. glad to see it!

Definitely. Need Knuble helping us out with the front. But with the roster spot and potential LTIR for Knuble I think it should be safe for MP to stay regardless. He should have to play his way off the team at this point.

damn

i thought that was a pretty reckless play on the part of their D-man…could’ve easily been a penalty

by DonnieKnutts on Nov 13, 2009 9:54 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah but they let stuff like that go in front a lot. Our guys have gotten away with that.

After seeing some offensive pop from our third line, I hate to see it go back to two grinders and a play maker.

Don’t see it happening. Why would you take Clark off MP’s wing? you could see a Gordon/Steckel/Osala 4th line and MP with Clark and Brads but why would you push MP out of C and break up that line?

If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...

by Rob Parker on Nov 13, 2009 10:28 PM EST up reply actions

eh, just trying to keep some offense on that 3rd line, and get 2 very good faceoff guys into the game. If you take out Steckel’s faceoffs tonight, we weren’t very good.

I could see keeping MP at C and keeping the C on his wing, just hate to see Brads there too, would just be too glaring a lack of offensive talent.

by HateOffSeason on Nov 13, 2009 10:31 PM EST up reply actions

Brads has been pretty good offensively this season though

…and MP will only make him better. I’ve been impressed with Brads a lot actually, his skating seems to have improved. He gets a couple of good chances a game now.

by DonnieKnutts on Nov 13, 2009 10:39 PM EST up reply actions

True, and once MP figures out Bradley’s one spot in the corner he scores from, we will probably see a flurry of no look, backhand passes to that exact spot.

by HateOffSeason on Nov 13, 2009 10:45 PM EST up reply actions

You can put Gordon on Steckel’s wing and just use him for D zone faceoffs and PK if you really need a draw.

I’d say, put Fehr in Knuble’s spot at RW and then we have Flash/Backstrom/Fehr.

Also, leave Clark with Perrault. (We may get lucky and have another person back tomorrow. For a hint, his initials are AMO)
