Friday Caps Clips: Wild @ Caps Game Day
Your savory breakfast links:
- Previews of tonight's Caps/Wild game from Vogs, NHL.com and Peerless, and be sure to check out our SB Nation partner Hockey Wilderness for coverage from the other side of tonight's match up.
- Alex Ovechkin is "getting closer" to getting back in the lineup. Of course, "closer" isn't necessarily "close" (though it sounds as if he's both, with the smart money on a return Tuesday at the earliest). [Washington Post, NHL.com]
- Great interview with Semyon Varlamov following his win in relief on Wednesday night. [Capitals Insider]
- AO has more shots on goal through four seasons than any player in League history (with 42% more than the guy in second place), but have his shots on goal actually been under-counted? [Puck Prospectus]
- Mike Green doesn't even get a mention as being in the running for Team Canada. Methinks someone goofed. [CBSSports.com]
- But Tomas Fleischmann sure is making a case for the Czech team, no? [Washington Times]
- What a Michael Nylander move might mean for the Hershey Bears. [York Daily Record]
- Not breaking news: a ref missed a call against the Caps. Breaking: he admits it. [The Hockey News]
- WWPBD? [Homer McFanboy]
- Several Caps (including the coaches) talk about their first NHL fights. Worth it for the brilliant intro. [Caps365 (video)]
- Because I can't let something like the above go without fact checking, Matt Bradley is wrong, Chris Clark is right, John Erskine is right (as far as regular season bouts go), Dean Evason is right, Eric Fehr is right, Green is right, Mike Knuble is right, Brooks Laich is right, Quintin Laing is unclear, Shaone Morrisonn is right, Brian Pothier is right, Tyler Sloan is... hmmm, David Steckel is right, and hockeyfights.com is awesome.
- Speaking of guys with grit, Stefan Della Rovere talks about playing in the Super Series. [Metro Canada]
- Could the Caps be headed to Russia for games against KHL teams? Seems far-fetched, but "anything is possible." [Puck Daddy]
- Finally, happy 40th birthday to Patrik Augusta.

This comment at Hockey Wilderness got my attention…
Oh, and in case you didn’t see Owen Nolan’s goal. Here’s the reason he is going to be a hot commodity come March…
I’m not a big fan of rentals, but Nolan is in the last year of a contract that pays him $2.75 million this year. He had 25 goals in 59 games last year and looks to be on a pace for around 20 this year. His career statistics are comparable to those of last year’s order of sandpaper for the Penguins, Bill Guerin. I wonder, if the Wild are out of the race in February, if this guy will be on the Caps’ radar.
It was a nice goal, too.
If you've read this far...seek help.
I’ve always liked Nolan, and it turned into full blown love when he did this.
Granted, that was a long time ago. This, however, was not.

What's all this I hear about getting Nolan for Nylander?
But Brawndo's got what plants crave. It's got electrolytes.
Here‘s the goal from last night. And I’d forgotten that he was Ovechkin’s favorite player growing up.

While I agree completely with the premise of the York Daily Times article, not a whole lot of hockey knowledge or fact checking on display there.
Most recently, Washington assigned Nylander to the Grand Rapids Griffins on a two-week conditioning stint, a move designed primarily to showcase his talents to the Detroit Red Wings, Grand Rapids’ NHL parent team. Detroit was looking at Nylander as a potential roster replacement, but the difficulties the Wings were facing were apparently resolved. Nylander was recalled from Grand Rapids and passed through waivers, which led to the increasingly serious discussions with the KHL.
Who wants to pick that paragraph apart?
I really like the York Daily Times review article last summer: “The Wayne Gretzky Trade 20 Years Later — How it Affected Hershey”

That’s nothing compared to the one they ran last week “Twenty Years After the Fall of the Berlin Wall, Impact Still Felt in Chocolatetown.”
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
But Sutherland recalled a game he worked last year where a dive was called on a Washington player and coach Bruce Boudreau didn’t like the decision. After giving him a few warnings to calm down, Sutherland handed Boudreau a bench minor and then slapped him with an ejection after the coach continued to fume vocally.
Does anyone else remember that ejection? Was that a road game or something?
"I'm just doing karate and trying to get females pregnant."
Was that when Bruce later said he was done complaining to refs because NHL fines were too expensive? I wonder if said incident is in the book?
That’s funny because he is VERY open about his salaries in the book. I’m only on chapter nine and it seems like he’s given out financial numbers on every year of his life. I bet there are people who comment on this very blog that were making more money that him his first year as Caps head coach.
But I can’t answer your actual question because I’m not that far yet.
No, this was last year. I want to say it was the Blues game and a cross-check, but I thought Semin went off the ice after that. I’ll have to go look it up on my lunch break.
Our lives are this moment, the music, the dance ....
Fan Clubs: Sloan, Schultz
I believe so, though I’m not sure if I’m right in thinking it was the same one. I’m absolutely sure that this incident happened last season, because I remember Boudreau taking that abuse of officials bench minor.
Our lives are this moment, the music, the dance ....
Fan Clubs: Sloan, Schultz
I remember that game. Didn’t go, but I knew it was bobblehead night, then the Caps skated around for the entire second like they didn’t care; they got got booed. Then Semin got cross-checked in the lower back, and I couldn’t figure out how he got hurt. Then Ovie scored a sick goal in the top corner on the PP at the beginning of the third.
I think you have the right game – Sutherland ref’d it and the Caps got an “abuse of official” minor. But there’s no indication that Bruce got tossed.
Related sigh-worthy moment from my recap of that game:
Moreover, the lack of a physical response from the team after David Backes cross-checked Alex Semin was infuriating – that’s definitely the “troubling” part. If Donald Brashear isn’t fighting (he hasn’t in a month), and he isn’t deterring opponents from running the team’s goalies and star forwards, what, exactly, is he doing for $1.2 million? (And the first person to type “forechecking” gets banned from this site.)

Sutherland seems to think so.
But Sutherland recalled a game he worked last year where a dive was called on a Washington player and coach Bruce Boudreau didn’t like the decision. I almost did, then thought better of it. Maybe Boylen is presuming, as Sutherland doesn’t specifically state he tossed him. The only ejection in recent history appears to be McTavish at the end of last year, says the googles.

funny, we were just discussing the new SEC rule that prohibits coaches from so much as questioning officials in any way, or risk suspension, and what that would do to the Caps in the NHL instituted it. We figured with the explosive personalities on the Caps, eventually Semin would be stuck coaching with the Mites playing because everyone else had been suspended mid-game.
If Stecks doesn’t play tonight and Gordon goes in, I for one hope that means Sloan gets sent down, not MP. Yes, it exposes him to waivers but I don’t think he gets claimed. If he does, we’re one step closer to needing another certain d-man on the roster which hopefully we can afford by early next week.
Still need to move one when everyone’s healthy.

Homer McFanboy was just banned from the Caps’ message boards for asking this question:
Last time we saw Ted Leonsis, we asked him when he was planning on retiring your number. He said as far as he’s concerned, you could still play for the Caps today. So what’s it going to take to get you back out there?
"A couple surgeries," Bondra said. "I still enjoy playing and can still play, but obviously my priorities have changed from when I was 22 or 23. My family and my health are most important now. Of course I miss the game and I’d love to come back, but it’s not possible for me to play anymore. It’s too bad."

Mike Green doesn’t even get a mention as being in the running for Team Canada.
You’re probably right that not mentioning him is an oversight, but I think Mike’s going to have a hard time making Canada’s Olympic team. His points may have him among the leaders on defense, but he’s been making some glaringly bad decisions recently. Knowing Steve Yzerman, probably the last thing that he wants is a defensman who’s prone to make a crucial turnover in crunch time. Of course all this could change if Green goes on one of his patented offensive tears in November and December.
Well, he’s tied for 4th in scoring among defensmen and is only 5 points behind Kaberle for the top spot. Admittedly he has only 2 goals so far, but 13 assists (6 on the power play) certainly make up for that. I’d be wiling to bet he’ll be the top scoring d-man by February and will be on Canada’s team if only to run the power play…

Russian Machine very rarely breaks.
I absolutely hate when they use Errey on On the Fly. The worst was when they used him as an analyst for the Caps-Pens series. Good call NHL Network, use one of the biggest homer announcers as an “objective” analyst for his team’s playoff series.

Fox didnt want to pay Lange the money, so they unceremoniously dumped him for Steigerwald (that’s where the infamous “STY-ghee” come from , folks). Lange took a huge paycut going from TV to radio, and it has just killed him. He sounds tired and dispassionate now.

that was the clearest F-bomb I’ve ever heard on a sports broadcast. Any idea who that was? Definitely not Kunitz or anyone else on the ice.
You generally catch that kind of stuff along the boards on the blue lines (where mics are placed to pick up the linesmen) or behind the net (where mics are placed to pick up board rattling from hits and goalies calling instructions).

Perhaps. It was so clear that I thought it must have come from the truck or broadcast booth. The camera was on Kunitz, but it didn’t look like he said anything. Either way, it was pretty great.
There was a GREAT one last season on Versus. I forget who was even playing but there was a huge scrum behind the net right under the mic.. one guy clearly wanted to fight and one guy clearly didn’t. “You’re an effing sissy! Sissy! EFFING SISSY!”
Different words were used. Ones that will make JP yell at me if I post them a lot.
Void Boyd! Go with Perreault!
I would pay good money to watch hockey completely mic’d up on pay-per-view for a few weeks. Always wonder what is said in those scrums.
Me too. I’d also like to hear the players being nice to each other. Sometimes you see guys laughing before faceoffs and stuff. I think on the Doug Weight Day in the Life Of episode he was talking friendly with one of the guys on the other team..
Also ref/player conversations would be fun to hear.
Void Boyd! Go with Perreault!
Yeah, I really hope NHL Network thinks about producing a show like Inside the NFL. You’d get the PG-13 version of all the conversations, coaches talking to the team, some high-quality footage.
NFL Films really allows football fans to get inside the game. How does every other sport not follow suit?
Cue Sam Spence music.
Hockey… is a war. A bitter affair, waged upon a merciless field of ice. A gladiatorial gauntlet of blades, worn and wielded. Sharp metal carves its indelible story on the floor, etching into watery stone the philosophy of these combatants. Thundering horns cry shrill victory’s bittersweet truth on those vanquished. Melee finds only momentary respite. To forty-four barbarians assembled, no game is played upon Gaia’s life-borne glass – because hockey is no game. Hockey… is a war.

i’d like to hear a real medical breakdown of AO’s injury once he returns, but i don’t think it will happen. i watched the thrashers game from my GF’s place in montgomery, AL (atlanta’s comcast affiliate), and they actually had the team doctor with a skeleton foot explaining kovalchuk’s injury: which bone had broken, how it broke, how it was treated, etc. i couldn’t believe it.
with AO, it seems odd to me to have a shoulder injury that lasts more than a week but less than a few months. but i don’t have any experience besides anecdotal fan observation.

MSG had the same exact segment when Kovalev tore his knee up, and that was at least a decade ago. Someone broke their lower leg horrifically for the Rags as well, and they did that again. CSN… well, we’re still waiting for 30 minutes of pre/post that don’t mention the ’Skins.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
MSG went even further and actually showed the surgery on Kovalev’s knee. Pretty graphic, but interesting.

Yeah I remember that. Do you remember the toe pick broken leg? The guy had a spiral fracture up his whole tibia (iirc).

The guy caught his toe on the ice as he was falling backwards and spinning so it pinned his lower leg in the one spot and just destroyed it.

No, I missed that. Any idea to whom/when it happened?

Right around ‘94. It was one of the semi-known checkers like Noonan or Kypreos, but I’m almost positive it wasn’t Kypreos. It was that caliber player, IIRC.

more to do with the team’s policies than the television network, i’d posit. (or with the nature of the injury.)

I’d lean toward sitting him out this weekend if he can’t play tonight. That would buy an extra 5 days and be considered “playing it extremely safe”.
Russian Machine very rarely breaks.
Mine too – put him in Tuesday, but I definitely see the value in trying to get inside Lemaire’s head a bit with the possibility that Ovi will play unexpectedly.

With or without, we need to put a beatdown on that Devils team. They’ve been owning us too much lately and they are not as good as their record indicates.

NJD fans don’t even deserve to see AO. Sit him for the weekend and make sure he’s healed. Let the rest of the team fight through the quicksand that is the neutral zone at the Rock.

Don’t make posts like this on the weekend or else you’ll be needed to beat down visitors who try to defend the trap again.
Void Boyd! Go with Perreault!
But maybe seeing Ovi is just what the NJ fans need? To understand how hockey should look and everything they’re missing?

One thing I didn’t like from the video was when they were talking to Steckel, Steckel said that Brashear told him not to fight cause it’s his (Brashear’s) job. Wrong, Brashear. Team toughness is a TEAM’S job. If Steckel feels like the other team is taking liberties or needs to be kept in line, then he should fight. You don’t prevent shenanigans with one guy that fights once a month and skates 7 minutes a game.

To be fair, Dave can’t hit the net either, so might as well keep things consistent.

Couldn’t tell you, but I can offer up a guess. As has been discussed ad nauseum here, team toughness is a mentality. And considering Brashear was on the Caps for many of these youngsters’ rises to prominence he may have hurt the growth of that mentality. With someone who is a pugilist and a veteran saying that one shouldn’t fight because it’s not their job, it offers the mentality of let other people handle it. Now this mentality needs to be broken for the mentality of whoever is on the ice needs to step up if the situation calls for it. And it’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

Not impossible, though. The last few games have shown me signs that that might be starting to turn around. We’ll see if it continues.

Yeah. Like I said it’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks, not impossible. Maybe they realized the consequences of being pushed around when Ovechkin went down. Maybe Bruce is finally getting through to them. Either way they have been showing more signs of physicality, and it needs to continue.

My guess is a desire not to push him too hard just coming back from injury by putting him in on back-to-back nights. If I had to pick one game to put Schultz in and leave him out of the other, I’d scratch him tonight and put him in against the Devils.

Read this on TEB’s morning roundup;
“Turan (WashDC) Caps currently lead the league in goals for, which is excepted with so much firepower. By getting rid of Nylander to the KHL, will the caps bring in a real premiere shutdown defenseman (sorry Tom Poti…) before the deadline?
PIERRE LEBRUN Turan, Nylander still remains with the Caps although I think any day now he might be headed to the KHL…But yes, I think a D-man is what the Caps need. Thing is, GM GM has been pretty conservative at recent trade deadlines…”
Couldn’t help but think, Pronger anyone? Sure I know they asked for Alzner, Varly, and another prospect but in hindsight, a Pronger with Carlson in the wings makes up for the loss of Alzner and a Neuvy makes up for the loss of Varly… oh yeah that cap thing too, but would you all agree GMGM has been erring on the conservative side in his trades? Think he’ll be more aggressive this year?
But you only make that trade knowing you are going to sign him to that kind of extension. I would have made ANA let me make some preliminary negotiations so I knew what I was getting into first. Maybe PHI did do that. If so, it’s even dumber.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
I don’t think McPhee’s been conservative at the deadline. The Caps have only been buyers for two years. The first the replaced their long-time, fan-favorite goalie, and brought in one of the NHL’s all-time greats (along with picking up Cooke). In the second McPhee’s hands were tied by the salary cap situation.
As a general rule I think McPhee’s very conservative, and perhaps too much so, but I don’t think it’s fair to say he’s conservative at the deadline.
Further to that point, his inaction last year was more cap- and contract-created than based on conservatism, IMO. Hopefully this year he’ll have some flexibility to do what he feels needs to be done.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I dunno, getting Cooke, Fedorov and Huet at the ‘07 deadline wasn’t conservative (and didn’t shed any notable assets).
I’d suggest the contract limit and Anaheim’s asking price were too much, and there’s no reason to trade (arguably) your top goalie and d-man prospects for a guy who you might have for one year.
"I'm just doing karate and trying to get females pregnant."
by Bald Pollack on Nov 13, 2009 11:59 AM EST up reply actions
Of course, that trio didn’t cost him hardly anything. It is fair to question whether he’s willing to move a real asset in a trade that might have short-term upside and long-term downside.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Honestly I can’t remember the last time he did it, and made more questionable that he hasn’t done it when the team hasn’t been competitive. Considering the Pronger deal specifically, I’m happy with taking the briefcase, so to speak.

After seeing some of the recent Niedermayer rumors, I’m wondering if that may be something the Caps explore (assuming Nyls is shipped off soon). He’s not big and tough, but is a great skater and has all the other intangibles.
Of course, he’ll probably command a pretty big bounty, but shouldn’t be quite as rich as Pronger.
I think Niedemayer may be sinking his trade deadling value. He’s already waffling about retiring after this year (can’t remember where I read it, but it was withing the last week). At least with a rental, you want to think you have a chance to re-sign the guy. If you think he’s going to retire, you’d be wlling to pay a lot less, wouldn’t you?
Even as a rental that guy would cost a ton. The only thing that could sink his trade value is an injury.
