What happened to “Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world”? SB insist you have to have the team name in the tagline?
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
The didn’t insist, but the way that Google and other search engines work, we were missing out on a lot of traffic by not having the team name in there.

Alexander Semin, for scoring two beautiful goals — and creating Sean Bergenheim’s goal by making like a pee-wee playing his first game with bodychecking? (Seriously, the way Semin panicked and threw the puck to the worst spot on the ice was a breathtaking sight for a player of such talent.)
Semyon Varlamov, for steadying the fort after Theodore and his teammates crapped the bed?
From Lighthouse Hockey on who might be the MVP’s of the game. That kind of summed it all up for me. Didn’t really need to read anything else, although it was nice to see the Captain as a hero for a night.
Yeah, that Semin giveaway was indeed atrocious beyond words.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
… and yet he wasn’t credited with a giveaway.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Well, I guess skating along the blue line trying to out deke the entire Islanders team, and getting freight trained as a result is more of a takeaway for outstanding defensive play than it is a giveaway for showing your rediculous skill in a boneheaded way.
by HateOffSeason on Nov 12, 2009 8:12 AM EST up reply actions
Perhaps, though just prior to getting hit, he pushed the puck out into space.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Freight trained? Check the highlights – there was literally hardly any contact between Semin and the Islanders player.
The contact came, but it was after he’d coughed up the puck.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Contact, sure, but what I see is Semin trying to avoid the hit and tripping over the guy’s skates. Could be the angle, and the hit would have been pretty big if Semin hadn’t made the move to avoid it, but it still doesn’t look like he was hit all that hard.
I think we’d agree, thought, that whether he was or wasn’t hit hard is really beside the point…
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Agree with this.
Turnovers, and real bad turnovers at that, at the blue line are a part of living with Alex Semin. He almost never elects to make the simple hockey play. Sometimes he pulls it off with spectacularly good results; sometimes he doesn’t, with spectacularly bad results.
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
On that very play, I was getting excited b/c the dude on the RW looked open and if Semin had gotten it to him, he and the C would’ve had a 2-on-1 down low. Oh well, such is Sasha…
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
If memory serves, ShaMo was on the left side down low. I don’t understand why he was attacking and was farther up the ice than Semin, BMo, and one other player (Laich?). Seems to me that he should have hung back a bit and been in position for that turnover, but I’m no coach.

Based on the way the play developed the Caps had a chance for an odd man rush is Mo jumped up, so he did.
Gotcha. I’ll have to watch that play in the highlights. Unfortunately, that is frowned on at work, so I’ll check it out later.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
If you watch the replay, you can see ShaMo flying past Semin towards the Isles goal. Why on God’s earth he’s doing that is beyond me when he knows Semin is 50/50 to lose the puck at the blue line. Terrible giveaway by Sasha, but equally dumb play by ShaMo. If there’s a vote to be taken on which existing defenseman should be moved, he’s got my vote.
Do you recall who was on the right side of the ice?
"If you're gonna die after 24, might as well jump out at 23:59, no?"

I have to disagree. When the play start B-Mo picks up the puck and red line and Laich and Semin are on the Isles’ blue line, standing still so as to not come offside. As B-Mo makes the pass, ShaMo comes through the neutral zone with speed and enters the Islanders zone with a chance to create the odd man play. I think it’s a good move on his part.

AO would have seen that hit coming and freight trained the hitter. Then scooped that puck up and gone on his merry way. I don’t think I’ve ever seen AO try to bitch out of getting hit.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
We’ll just have to disagree on that one. In my view, when Semin is cutting across the blueline, no d-man should be putting himself in a position to be caught low knowing his propensity to turn over the puck there. I mean, it’s not like he hasn’t done it ten times already.
Yeah but you can’t think about what Semin’s proclivities are when you’re in the rush. Besides, with a chance to even it up, if one of those defensemen pull up, then you’ve given up the man advantage (which I thought they had) on said rush and wasted a possible scoring opportunity.

I think you can (though I have no problem with Mo’s play here). After all, Mo’s a guy who won big in arbitration two summers ago precisely because he knew his D partner’s proclivities and played accordingly.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
This happened on several occassions last night. The winger carries the puck into the zone, puts on the break and the trailer (often a defenseman) skates to the net looking to create. Pothier did it several times. My guess is that that is something that Bruce is coaching too.
Its a fine play as long as the puck gets deep at some point. If not with a shot, its gotta be a dump. The play creates offense but as Bobby says below, its risky.
"I think the relentless negative coverage in The Washington Post is a real difference from previous years," Redskins general counsel David Donovan said. "But in terms of the way our actual fans are behaving, we don't see any difference."
Yep – Pothier has been doing it a lot lately, and it’s been creating chances and goals (one of Sloan’s and another I can’t recall at the moment) because it’s dragging the D down with him and freeing up a trailing F.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Yeah but you can’t think about what Semin’s proclivities are when you’re in the rush.
To the contrary, I think that’s exactly what a defensive-minded d-man should be doing. It would be different if it were a guy b-mo or Laich who are fairly responsible with the puck, but Semin is a known turnover machine. ShaMo first responsibility is to stop goals, not score them. I’m not against calculated risks like rushing the puck or pinching from the point, but that was a very risky move and the proof is in the result.
He wouldn’t be. Trent Hunter was credited with a hit on the play. I take giveaways to be more of the “unforced error” sort of thing.
If you've read this far...seek help.
Whoever’s counting that as a hit needs to have his eyes checked. Semin panicked when he saw Hunter coming at him and went into a slide well before there was any contact.
Such is the way of subjective stats.

A little late to ask, but do you have any idea why neither d-man was close enough to even get in the frame by the time this goal was scored? I understand it was a bad giveaway and all…

But the team was strong enough to work around that mistake 9and the other glaring errors of the first five minutes). It was a solid team win. When things worked well, the team worked great. When things didn’t work well, the team made adjustments, thought their way through the problem, didn’t panic, and showed faith in each other’s strengths.
IS PЯACTICE ЯINK NOW, MAYBE NOT TOO LONG
Of course, more complete teams than the Islanders would have made the Caps pay for that first five minutes over and over and over.

And while getting wings is nice (although I haven’t redeemed for any of them yet), the shootout goal doesn’t count in stats, so it shouldn’t count for wings.

It’s not walking distance, but there’s one pretty close to me. We went a couple of times last season, just haven’t cashed in this year yet. Strangely, yesterday I was suggesting that we should use the ones from the Florida game and then, poof, we get another one.

Random stats:
The Caps have played around 1,097 minutes of hockey so far this season and have trailed by two goals for 13:58 of that (with last night’s down-two span of 6:48 being more than twice as long as any other such stretch). They have yet to trail by more than two in any game.
All that means that for just under 99% of game time, the Caps either have had the lead, were tied, or were within a goal of tying the game.

223:04.
So for about 20% of game time, the Caps have had leads of two or more. This covers ten games (more than half, obviously).
Summarizing, 20% of the time the Caps have had a two-plus goal lead, 79% of the time the games have been tied or within a goal, and 1% of the time, the Caps have trailed by two.

just under 99% of game time, the Caps either have had the lead, were tied, or were within a goal
And they’ve spent much of that time trying to blow leads by turning puck over and taking dumb penalties. Discipline is standing between this team and the Cup.
How many 3rd period leads have they now blown?

Not sure, but they’re 7-0-1 when leading after two periods.

I just looked it up. They have blown leads in the 3rd period 5 games so far this season. They got 6 points in those 5 games. This is what drive me nuts. I wish they had gotten zero instead. This team is so talented and resilient that they get away with too much.

Interesting read. Physicality with a direct hockey purpose versus physicaltiy only for the sake of intimidation. I like this quote in particular:
In any hockey game, hundreds of small battles are fought all over the ice, and to come out on top skaters need to play with a physical edge, and also with courage; the courage to take a hit to make a play…
Some of our guys need to heed this advice IMO.

Perreault had another solid game
Didn’t see his shootout attempt, but he was on the doorstep to make sure Fehr’s goal got behind the line. He showed more great moving, passing and forechecking in the offensive zone. I love how he gets the puck along the boards, dodges a hit, moves the puck, and then gets on a rail to the front of the net. He knows how he’s going to score in this league.
Void Boyd! Go with Perreault!
So what’s in store for Perreault from here? With Gordon likely coming back this weekend, will Perreault be forced back down to Hershey? Is it a matter of earning a role or no roster spots being available? Would Nylander to Minsk resolve this?
I really don’t want to see the kid go – he’s been a bright spot in a sour timespan (albeit 3-1) with Ovechkin out.
I still can’t call this a sour timespan. I really can’t. I think this sequence with Ovi out is flat essential for the team – it forces them to play as a team and not let one man be the hero, and that can only be good.
Our lives are this moment, the music, the dance ....
Fan Clubs: Sloan, Schultz
And, as you’ve pointed out, it’s nice that the schedule has lined up the way it has (to an extent).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Kellobellow hit it on the head. Okay, 3-1 isn’t sour, but the reality is that the Caps have faced a lousy team twice (5-9-1), a slightly better than lousy team once (6-6-6), and a good team once (12-4-0).
The Devils game was a piss poor effort all around, so I’m not sure what difference 8 could make, but the other three games shouldn’t have even been close, even without Ovechkin.
Ovi is usually good for one goal and one swift kick in the shorts per game for this team.
I agree with your point – it’d be nice if they could just crush teams and save us all the heart attacks, although the Isles always play us hard and well and work their butts off every night. The Devils game is our if the guys can stay out of the box. :P All three of their goals came on the PP, they couldn’t score against us at ES to save their souls in that game.
As for Florida, I don’t expect a 100% effort on both nights of a back-to-back. I just don’t.

If Nyls’ roster spot really becomes open, the Caps could actually have a healthy forward scratch that they might consider using. Then again, if MP is the regular scratch, he may be better off playing in Hershey.
“if MP is the regular scratch” is the key phrase there – depending on his play and the play of others, he may or may not be.

I’m a huge fan, but Perreault is going to make a bigger contribution than Lainger.

I wouldn’t much of a problem with that. Certainly Gordo is more valuable as he can take draws. However, if he’s not 100% I don’t want him back in lineup. I’d rather have Laing than a penalty taking machine.

by Carl Putnam on Nov 12, 2009 10:17 AM EST up reply actions
and with MP’s recent play vs. Stecks, gotta believe the healthy scratch will be Stecks. Gordon will be given a fair shot to return after his injury, and will cover up Stecks’ responsibilities (PK, defensive FO, etc). Hopefully then Stecks will return like Pothier did after his benching.
Unfortunately, I have to agree that Stecks would be the C to scratch at the moment. Maybe we’re expecting too much from him or something, I dunno, but he’s not been great.

Interesting. I was watching “Around the Horn” the other day while at the gym and one topic was whether the league should make the Caps be more open about Ovie’s injury and when he’d be back playing. The arguments were dumb but I was struck by a comment by Jay Mariotti who said they should say when he’s going to play because “Ovechkin is the most exciting player in all of professional sports and people want to buy tickets to see him”. Kind of blew me away that a guy like Mariotti puts Ovie at the top of the list.
That surprises me too. Mariotti is the worst of that bunch. He’s a pompous blow-hard.

At the end of each day the KHL publishes a player movement report with all moves, changes, demotions, waivers, etc. for the league for that day. In today’s report which was just recently published (it is already the end of the day there in Moscow), there is no mention of Nylander for any league.

speaking of speedy little Gangsta Greenie, in the 2nd period in the game last night, I swear he skated about 230 feet with the puck, all the way down the the length of the rink, around the back of the Islanders’ net, and out to the circles. And it was sublime. No one on the ice could keep up with him.
Yeah he did just about that. It was sort of impressive but in the same time I was thinking, well that guy looked like he was open, so did that guy…
One guy just drove his semi as a float. I guess semis are cool.
Two thoughts. First, pretty impressive that he basically can skate the length of the ice at will (when Pronger isn’t out there). Two, he probably (hopefully) has learned that when he is streaking into the offensive zone corner he better not force a pass to the middle of the ice or it’s an odd man rush against. Even if a guy looks open I’m cool with Green holding that puck unless he’s positive he can get the puck to the guy. It’s great that he can skate the puck like that but he is taking himself out of defensive position and it seems that at certain moments holding the puck might be the defensively safe move.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
It’s great but if you’re going to do that just to skate behind the net and leave the puck there you may as well just dump it in. That’s all…
One guy just drove his semi as a float. I guess semis are cool.
In hindsight that makes sense, but do we really want to turn Mike Green into a “dump it in” defenseman? What sets him apart is his ability to create with the puck. He takes risks for sure and you never know if any of his rushes will pan out but to ask him to dump it in is totally changing his game. You can’t know if he’ll be able to create a good shot until after the rush so it’s sorta something you have to live with. If him holding the puck longer is his way of minimizing the risk I’m OK with it.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...

I can’t help myself. I’ve seen all those Ovi goals a hundred times, and yet I still have to watch.
My favorite part of “the goal” is Keith Carny’s reaction when he watches it slide on by… he nearly hurts himself in contorting disgust and amazement… it’s hilarious.
Semin was the second gunman on the grassy knoll, clearly he must be traded.

Don’t know if its relevant but the Nylander gear at the Caps store is over 50% off right now…

I feel the same away about avatars as Ovechkin does about speed limits.
Do they stock the Grand Rapids Griffins jerseys? That was a nice looking sweater.
IS PЯACTICE ЯINK NOW, MAYBE NOT TOO LONG
that would be a classic. first person i see wearing a nylander griffins jersey at VC gets a free beer!

From Tarik:
The Caps are in a holding pattern with regard to Michael Nylander and whether he’ll accept a loan to Russia. Things are moving in that direction, but he’s still considering his options, I’m told. Knowing how meticulous Nylander is, this does not come as a surprise.
I don’t get it. Hasn’t he had two months to consider his options?
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/capitalsinsider/ovechkins-getting-closer.html#more
two months is an under statement, thought it was much longer than that. Weren’t there reports he had phone calls with Jagr throuhgout the summer? Also, didn’t his family move back to Sweden in the beg. of the summer and are still there?…
Either way, I’m starting to think of this as Nylander saying “no one tells me what to do” / insignificant power struggle. i.e. He’ll leave when he’s reay to leave and doesn’t want to be pushed by the organization. Almost like saying, “you can’t fire me, I quit.” The narative also fits in with his issue with BB “you can’t change my game no matter your system. I play my way.” At least we’re still inching towards a resolution.
I don’t agree. Why would he agree to be waived if he was doing a you can’t fire me, I quit type of deal? He’s already put himself at the mercy or the organization. He isn’t a little kid trying to kick and scream out the door.
One guy just drove his semi as a float. I guess semis are cool.
I’m getting the vibe it’s not that it won’t happen, but that there might now be more than one team in play. Just get it done already!
We need the roster spot, or Perreault’s on his way back to Hershey, it sounds like.
Maybe to pick up the rest of his clothes so he can move into his apartment in DC, amirite?
Void Boyd! Go with Perreault!

are you suggesting more than 1 KHL team or do you think some Sweden teams are calling? Either way what’s the process and where do the Caps fit in? i.e. – is it the player/agent chooses the team, then that team works out a payment agreement with the Caps OR is it the foreign team works out an agreement with the Caps and then the player/agent are approached? I only ask because i’m guessing the answer to that question will tell us what the holdup is. (I agree with you gfcaps fan)
Also, didn’t his family move back to Sweden in the beg. of the summer and are still there?…
Yup, still there.

The Caps are in a holding pattern with regard to Michael Nylander
holding pattern (n.) – A usually circular pattern flown by aircraft awaiting clearance

Congrats on the jersey foul find, yoshietree! Although I sort of resent this statement:
Meanwhile in the capital of both the United States and hockey sweater fouls,
But maybe it’s true. I do see a fair number of jersey fouls at Caps games, and I’ve never been to a non-Caps NHL game. Maybe VC’s jersey foul frequency is unique in the league.

Also, Pens down 3-1 – and Bourque with a team-best +1.. couldn’t ask with a finer result thus far!

That’s pretty ideal. Keep working it, CBo!

Crosby just hit the post twice on the power play, then took a holding penalty and nullified the odd-man.
What a splendid evening this is turning out to be!

AH-HAHA! The camera team had the boom mic pointed at Kunitz and the video was right on him as he let out a very very loud, very clear, very HBO “AHH, F***.”
I guess this thing is good luck after all.

Bourque ends the game as the only Penguins player with a positive +/-. Could have easily had 1g2a, too, were it not for a rough-luck bounce and Crosby shanking a perfect setup from behind the net.

So let’s see: Pens and Caps, both big teams with injury woes. Pens have scored 1 goal in the last three games. Caps have scored 16 goals in the last three games.
