Wednesday Caps Clips: Islanders @ Caps Game Day
Your savory breakfast links:
- Previews of tonight's Caps/Isles game (Really? These guys again?) from Vogs, NHL.com, Peerless and Rock The Red.net, and be sure to check out our SB Nation partner Lighthouse Hockey for coverage from the other side of tonight's match up.
- Infirmary report: Jeff Schultz is out, Mike Green is in, Alexander Semin has a brace on his wrist, Boyd Gordon is getting closer, and what's-his-name is "day-to-day" (unless he's joking again). [Capitals Insider]
- Is today Michael Nylander Day, or just another tease?
- Mathieu Perreault's NHL career is off to a nice start. [Washington Post]
- The Morrison/Mike Knuble effect. [Washington Times]
- Huge thanks to @chaddukes and @LaVarArrington (a.k.a. "The LaVar Arrington Show with Chad Dukes") for the shout out yesterday (discussing this post that we ran the other day regarding the risk of Alex Ovechkin's contract) and for providing islands of Caps coverage amid a sea of Redskins bloviating. Check it out, including a must-listen interview with Chris Clark in Segment 2. [Segment 1, Segment 2, Segment 3, Segment 4 (audio)]
- Brendan Morrison compares AO to Pavel Bure. [Vancouver Sun]
- Ovechkin is only the sixth-most valuable player (second among skaters) in the League so far this season... [Puck Prospectus]
- ... but he certainly is clutch (as are a trio of other Caps)... [The Hockey News]
- ... and is a dominant force in the offensive zone. [Behind The Net]
- Of course, he's still an easy target for
xenophobeshaters. [Sportsnet] - More power rankings, with the Caps up a spot to third here at SBN and up four spots to second at CBSSports.com.
- It's important to know your ABC's... or at least your A, U, W and X. [The Whig Standard]
- Steve Kolbe "Takes 5" with Tyler Sloan. [Capitals (audio)]
- Episode 2 of "Caps on the Fly" featuring Green and Bob Woods, for your viewing pleasure. [Caps365 (video)]
- Nicklas Backstrom is a fantastic value... at the moment. [Puck Prospectus]
- Speaking of Backstrom, even if you're not quite fluent in Swedish, there's some pretty cool stuff in this video (from about the 5:20 mark on). [Hockeykväll (video)]
- Remember when AO wasn't suspended for his alleged slew foot in Atlanta? Well, Colin Campbell was just following the League's well-established guidelines for discipline. [Down Goes Brown]
- Keith Aucoin had a nice homecoming last weekend (though he would rather have been traveling from Miami to D.C., we're sure). [New England Hockey Journal]
- Courage! It couldn't come at a better time. [Hockey Mom]
- The Florida man who claimed to have supplied the Caps with 'roids has pled guilty to Federal steroids charges. [Tampa Bay Online]
- Cody Eakin on dangerous hits. [Edmonton Sun]
- More than you could ever need to read about Sami Lepisto. [Hockey's Future]
- On this day back in 1981, the Caps named Bryan Murray head coach. Murray still sits atop the franchise coaching leaderboards for wins, losses, games coached and
lispy post-game pressersplayoff disappointments. - Happy 55th birthday to Michel Bergeron and happy 37th to personal fave Steve Konowalchuk.
- Finally, a very heart-felt thanks on this Veteran's Day to every man and woman who has put themselves in harm's way so that we can live the lives we live (and know that you're in our thoughts on the other 364 days of the year, too).

Wow is that Brophy column ridiculous. The OV part reads worse than a gossip column or something you would find on TMZ.
semi-related – apparently Ovie was on TMZ yesterday
"No Brooks Laich, no win. Know Brooks Laich, know win."
A pretty lame segment, caught coming out of Kettler. They asked, “What’s the weirdest thing you ever did with your stick?” Ovi replied, “Break ’em.”
Fight, you time-wasting figure skaters!

I was really enjoying the Arrington show until they started talking about how Peter Forsberg is an iron man who’s played a physical style in the NHL the last 13 or so years without any signs of wear and tear.

yeah, particularly since most everyone takes that time off anyway and its just a tiny skeleton crew that can’t get work down anyway because everyone else is gone.
for me, its a week that I get paid to catch up on museum exhibits.
For me, corporate holidays are generally prime target dates for major changes. There’s a couple of guys in our organization who haven’t had a holiday off in six years (the cabling guys). Fortunately for me, the last two months of the year the data center is in change lockdown because of Medicare open enrollment, so it certainly eases things some (if it makes January a bit more hellish).

I’m a product of Montgomery County Public Schools, so I’m accustomed to getting every Jewish holiday, every federal holiday, and a day off whenever there’s a slight breeze with a chance of snowflakes.
College was a bit different, but I miss those days. :(
Just think about it. Had Ovie been suspended 2 games for his Slew, he’d be playing right now. (and for the past 2 weeks.)
By not suspending Ovie, Campbell doomed him to miss more games than if he had.
Close but no cigar. Ovechkin’s alleged slew foot was in the first Atlanta game. He played in the next five games (including the second Atlanta game).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I have to wonder if the comparison between Pittsburgh losing without Malkin and Washington not missing a beat without Ovechkin is really fair. Pitt’s had tougher competition this week in San Jose and Boston than Washington had in a home-and-home with Florida, and they dropped the Devils decision thanks to some bad penalties. I think the timing on missing Ovi was pretty lucky in the sense that we’re not having to deal with powerhouses with him out.
Not knocking the Isles – they’re still dangerous when they’re healthy because they work as hard as they do – but they’re not San Jose. Speaking of the Isles, though, you know that Kyle Okposo’s been diagnosed with H1N1, right? Wonder what that will do to the offense?
Our lives are this moment, the music, the dance ....
Fan Clubs: Sloan, Schultz
Pens are not missing Malkin. They are missing the bulk of their starting lineup, and now Brooks Orpik is injured too. Last night the Bruins were essentially playing against the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins, and Sidney Crosby. Who is most likely playing in pain as well.
IS PЯACTICE ЯINK NOW
I seem to recall that last year the Hershey Bears did pretty well against NHL competition. OK, Ovechkin wasn’t out of the lineup, but it seemed like everyone else was at one point or another.
Just sayin’.
It definitely does suggest that Washington is a deeper organization to-to-bottom than Pittsburgh

Good point… though Pittsburgh has another player who hasn’t missed a game and, according to some, is the best player in the world. But yeah, Pitt also has some more injuries besides Malkin, too.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
When they were all healthy, and when Center Ice was still in free previews, the Penguins looked scary good. But all those Game Sevens take a toll on you. Detroit’s feeling it as well.

A good point on the injuries, and it’s not getting better – but that just reinforces what I’m saying, that the comparison some are drawing isn’t entirely fair. We had some seriously rough patches around Thanksgiving last year when most of our starting blueline was out of commission.
On the bright side, though, we haven’t heard much about Washington as a one-man team lately.

Speaking of said player, here’s a little trivia quiz. Who’s had more points in their team’s last five games, Crosby or Ovechkin(inlcuding the 3+ games he’s been out)?
ding, ding, ding. We have a winner. And by the way, Crosby is leading the league in one category- most minor penalties taken.

Maybe we should draw the same comparison between Crosby and Semin.
Our lives are this moment, the music, the dance ....
Fan Clubs: Sloan, Schultz
Well, noone’s ever used the word Semin and best player in the world in the same sentence. It’s all a matter of perpective. If Semin were to lead the league in minors and go five games without a point, the calls to trade him and/or not resign him would be pouring in. The fact that a player of Crosby’s pedigree can go through such a rough stretch shows just how difficult it is to excel in the NHL.
Isn’t it odd to be facing the Islanders for the third time when we haven’t seen Carolina or Tampa even once?
IS PЯACTICE ЯINK NOW
Carolina hasn’t won a game in more than a month (0-9-3). The Caps don’t play them until November 30th. There are 10 games for the Hurricanes until that night in Raleigh. Will the Hurricanes finally reach double-digit points before then (they currently have seven)?
If you've read this far...seek help.
haha. I actually think he might, short term – if only for the reason that the team doesn’t want the new guy to look bad. Either way, since i’m working in Raleigh currently, i’ll be at the game tonight.

Well, if timing is everything in life then the Hockey News certainly wins today’s prize with it’s very timely piece on Getting to Know Michael Nylander. Seriously, what are they thinking?
by b.orr4 on Nov 11, 2009 9:42 AM EST up reply actions 1 recs
Honestly, Nylander should far and a way based on logic. Where as Bourque was focused on asset management, Nyls has the Salary Cap, NMC, transfer agreements, who to bring up after, his much longer NHL career not to mention the convos going round and round in repetitive circles that should put him over the top.
The illusion that Bourque will have more is because we’ve been talking about moving Nylander since oh Thanksgiving 2 years ago…
Talk about disparate situations. One guy, generally liked, farm system product, very small cap room but wedged out in unlucky circumstances to the conference rival. The other, generally disliked, veteran brought in, massive cap hit, just now potentially being moved (I’ll believe it when the plane takes off) in extremely fortunate circumstances to a different league altogether.

I wouldn’t say Nylander is “generally disliked.” His contract situation, most definitely, but as a person, Nylander is an all around good guy and has been very accommodating throughout this whole ordeal.

Probably because Perreault is making the players around him better. I can’t think of another forward call-up that’s had that kind of impact.

One guy just drove his semi as a float. I guess semis are cool.
Me posting “I disagree” right after “I agree” was humorous and made ME laugh. That’s all that matters. Be nice.
As for substance, everyone on the team that had been asked about Aucoin’s play has said that he’s been valuable as a call-up. He was averaging like .5 points per game and showed great hustle the whole time, even if he did get lax in the d-zone once or twice.
Void Boyd! Go with Perreault!
What do you expect the teammates to say? “He stinks”? Aucoin is basically a one-dimensional player that isn’t really good enough at that one dimension to be an impact NHL player. I don’t think his play is even close to Perreault’s play. If you were to apply “he is playing too well to send down” to one of those guys it would be MP, hands down.

Interesting point in TEB’s article,
“Perreault said the transition from the AHL has been easier with José Theodore sitting in the locker stall next to him.”yeah, read that this morning and just reinforced that Jose is a good guy. And how cool for MP to get to sit next to one of his favorite players and have him help with adjusting to NHL life.
I had already noticed that. You would assume that they would be chummy since they are both Francos but there have been a few times when they’ve been talking and laughing together. Looks like a big brother little brother situation.

With a name like Bald Pollack, I hope have one of those great Polish last names with a superfluous amount of Y’s in it and preferably a “ski” on the end.

I hope it’s Nick Sobotka.

BTW, folks, season ticket holder gifts are available beginning tonight, not Friday, per Guest Services email.
Fight, you time-wasting figure skaters!
In two years we’ve gone from engraved plaques with pieces of hockey net, to autographed Ovie memorabilia, to this year’s gift of a……..gym bag.
Advantage, Leonsis.
They’ve had the bag on display at the games and it is really nice quality! Personally I hated the dust collectors and missed the days of something wearable ( a fleece, a windshirt, a jersey). At least now I have something I can USE. I always thought it was dumb not to use the STH gift as an opportunity for branding. Thumbs up on this year’s gift.

The NHL discipline chart made me laugh out loud, great stuff.
Semin was the second gunman on the grassy knoll, clearly he must be traded.

I don't care how you score goals. Pretty or ugly. The ballet or the bulldozer. However you do it, just do it. And make sure you do it more than the other guys.

I know he's busy and all
but it’s kinda lame there’s no news from McPhee about Nylander yet.
Void Boyd! Go with Perreault!
I’ll be back in about 6 hours (Curse you work!), I’m going to assume the best and post this early.

Does anyone else believe Nyls isnt heading to Russia after all?
Too many NHL teams need centers with all these injuries, and not all will rely on their own players to step up. CHI, NYR, TOR, to name a few. And with the GM’s all meeting and trade talk strangely silent, I wouldnt be surprised if something was brewing.
Why would anyone trade for him when he was just on waivers? If anyone wanted him they could have had him for free.

Oh, the GMs meeting was silent, but not in the good way:
“I haven’t experienced any of that,” McPhee said, of trade discussions with his counterparts. “I haven’t had one discussion.”

Aren’t you the one who says GMGM is lying 100% of the time? If so… he’s had 29 discussions!

You’re right — I should modify that what he says is independent of the truth most of the time.
That said, this time I believe him.
