Bourque made a Scuderi-stop in the crease. Well, maybe not as elegant, but he still got it.

Yeah not pretty but he got there…I thought he could have maybe gone after the shooter and not committed so fully to blocking a shot in the net (not his position) but it was scramble mode and he did what it took.

The other thing about throwbacks is that they look rather silly when on the ice along with a hypermodern jersey like the Flames’ current design. Especially since Calgary has such sweet throwbacks, they should do a better job coordinating this stuff.

Brooks Orpik wields his stick in a way AO never has. I could cut some slack for the Cole hit, but when you start using your stick to try to break hands that’s another story.

You see something a lot of officials don’t…He’s not slashes orpik. Maybe you’ve got a different perspective than I (naturally); I know Orpik and Semin battled pretty hard in the playoffs but I don’t think of him as a hacker, when he can just lay people out cleanly.

“reputation throughout the league” sounds like you might have some evidence to back it up. I’ve never heard it (and I hear a lot of things).

I also know Orpik fought through a pretty painful hand injury he suffered in the Washington series. What’s good for the goose……

I know CSN caught at least two incidents of Orpik carving up Semin behind the play in the playoff series. It’s not the kind of clip that makes youtube so there’s not much else I can say. I know I’m not the first person to take notice of Orpik’s propensity to use his stick for more than playing the puck.

I didn’t lead with Kunitz’ one-time behavior. I think Orpik has made his stick work more of a habit, I cited the playoffs because that’s the clearest I can remember it being caught on camera. I cited the Kunitz thing because of the “goose and gander” argument which I don’t think makes a lot of sense in this context.

Think a little longer. You point out Orpik’s stickwork, I note that he suffered a serious hand injury during the playoffs and was understandably going to give when he’d been taking. Seeing it now?

Where Kunitz falls in is about where knee-on-knee hits do — not relevant.

by Hooks Orpik on Nov 13, 2009 2:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m not seeing it because in no way have you implicated Semin. Until you can get a little more specific I’m going to assume that this injury suffered during the playoffs was more likely suffered a) blocking a puck with the hand b) against the Flyers or c) some other incidental way. The way Orpik plays Semin demonstrates that busting up Semin’s hands is part of the game plan. He did it during the regular season, he did it during the playoffs. Granted, Semin is fragile and brittle and really talented so it makes sense to target the guy, I just can’t get behind “break his hands” as a game plan. I don’t think the Caps targeted Orpik that way, and I certainly don’t think Semin did anything to Orpik that justified that kind of treatment. I just don’t think that Orpik’s stick work was a “goose and gander” situation; he wasn’t just giving back what he was taking. It was part of his approach to playing against Semin and I think it’s lame. I thought it was lame when Lindros used to do it to the D that he was constantly matched up against, and I think it’s lame when Orpik does it.

Meh. Not sure what else you want. Lindros and Forsberg both have pretty widespread reputations for their dirty stick play but it’s pretty hard to find evidence of it online. Youtube gives you basically one example from each. Is that enough to label either dirty with their stick? I’d say no. But watching both of them it’s pretty clear to me that they had no compunction about using their stick as a weapon. Forsberg also has the diving reputation, and while there are a couple examples on youtube it’s not really enough to support a broad claim that he’s a diver. But people that watched him for years can recall more examples than that. This is just an area that is inherently difficult to support empirically.

by Fehr and Balanced on Nov 16, 2009 3:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

evidence doesn’t mean just youtube videos, though. redbirdie’s claim is that he’s dirty, and her supporting evidence is that “people say he’s dirty.” so find quotes to back it up. in the case of lindros, the allegations are out there within the first few google hits. and one poll has him as the 9th most disliked player of all time. those would be non-youtube examples showing that lindros has a reputation. or cite an instance where orpik was suspended for his stickwork. (has he been?) lindros was suspended for this bit of nastiness i know:

and he was accused of biting marty mcsorely.

or at least give a few anecdotal examples from your own memory. why even debate with someone if the only thing she’s bringing to the table is a pronouncement of opinion? it’s hit and run. and we see the same thing all the time with AO.

by Natty Bumppo on Nov 16, 2009 9:41 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

“are you serious? everybody says AO is dirty. fans on other teams have told me he’s dirty. he’s got a reputation. obviously he’s dirty.” how do you argue with that?

On second review the first three links are basically just fan accusations. The only one that really documents anything is the last one. Your point is still taken I’m just pointing out that it’s not always easy to find documentation.

by Fehr and Balanced on Nov 17, 2009 12:47 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

right, but all she was claiming was fan accusations. “a reputation.” “fans have repeatedly said.” which is what i linked…fans repeatedly saying things. of course the same could be said about tons and tons of pro hockey players, rightly or wrongly. it’s a crap argument. the point i was making, though, is that she asserted a fact (general sentiment X exists amongst fans) and gave nothing in the way of support.

re: lindros, i’d argue both the slash suspension and the biting of mcsorely are substantive. but the poll should be enough to show reputation amongst fans, which was her assertion.

by Natty Bumppo on Nov 17, 2009 1:13 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah I see what you’re saying. I’m just not sure lots of fans saying something makes it any more than one fan saying something. I did say the McSorely link was substantive and the suspension obviously is. Orpik was only suspended for the Cole hit (which is kind of a joke IMO) but I don’t really use suspensions as an accurate mark because of the vagaries of NHL discipline.

If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...

by Fehr and Balanced on Nov 17, 2009 12:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i think i confused my own argument up there, so no worries. but basically: the point was weak AND the lack of supporting evidence was weak, thus the “weak” comment from me. you’re right that an avalanche of cheap and dirty lindros/forsberg moments are not readily available in the interwebs. but there’s certainly something. and current players have the (dis)advantage of all the discussion boards, screen shots, youtubes, animated GIFs. it’s just impossible to debate with someone who makes only unfalsifiable statements of opinion.

by Natty Bumppo on Nov 17, 2009 12:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah you’re right. I completely agree with your premise, I just went back later and looked at the links and it got me thinking about the other stuff. I spend enough time battling people at other SBN sites to be weary of what you’re describing.

He’s “Hooks” Orpik because of his name. What would his nickname (and yours) be if he was named Nash Orpik? He’s a pretty damn good skater so it’s not like he’s notorious for water skiing or other obstruction fouls like slower guys in the league. The pun is more a result of his name than anything else.

He’s like Eric Lindros, IMO. Lindros got credit for being mean and physical but you rarely hear people talk about how dirty he was with his stick and I don’t think he got called for it very much. But he wielded that stick like a weapon on plenty of occasions. I guess in fairness to Orpik, when we talk about Penguins using their stick as a weapon he’s passed the torch on to someone else by now…

I have been posting in the wrong thread…! I lose.

Chris Bourque was the only Penguin with a positive +/- at the end of the night, with 1 assist and +1 on 12 minutes ice time. He had a good chance for a second assist on a tape-to-tape pass to Crosby from the office to a moving Brodeur – Crosby looked like he put it right in the legend’s chest protector. Also had a prime goal opportunity skip along the crease, never got it to cross the red line. Oh, well. =)

Perfect game – 4 to 1 not-Pens, and Bourque is by far the best Penguin on the night. Faaaaan-tastic!

Bourque was not the best Penguin of the night. The plus/minus is screwy because of the empty net goal with 1 second left, wouldn’t read too much in it.

Bourque had a slam dunk empty netter from about 3 feet and couldn’t finish. He got a secondary assist on a play he didn’t have a huge impact on.

And yes, he certainly missed on that should-have goal. I jumped out of my seat, and promptly fell back in, at that.

I’m currently watching the Habs/Yotes game. I have Bryzgalov on my fantasy team, and the Habs just scored twice to make it 3-1. My goalies are not having a good week. I had Theo and Steve Mason yesterday – by far the two worst goalies on the night.

I don’t want Chris to do well. Why does everyone else?

I’d still like to see BJ lose a bunch of games 1 – 0 though.

One guy just drove his semi as a float. I guess semis are cool.

I got nothing against Chris. His jersey looks like shit though.

Tough break for the Sharks. Neal takes a friendly fire high stick from Grossman and Pavelski gets a penalty. 8 minutes left in a 2-2 game no less.

DET got hit with a friendly fire high stick then a bogus hook to go 5 on 3. Was the SJS one a weak side ref? The ref that called the high stick in DET game was at least 90 feet away and there was another ref 10-15 away. Shameful.

It was a pretty crappy shootout.

Despite myself, I kind of enjoyed the Caps/Isles shootout. But this Sharks/Stars shootout was pretty terrible.

I didn’t think it was the worst shootout I’ve seen, Turco made some nice athletic saves.

But that was an awesome game to watch. James Neal is a beast, he was flying out there.

Gotta agree. Shootouts aren’t the best way to decide games, but that was a nail-biter of a shootout if you’re a fan of either team.

Seriously. Eff them. I have zero sympathy for them at all. I feel for the guys who are hurt on a human level, especially Ward, but on a team level they can all rot. If they get one more point this year it’s too much (unless it really really helps the Caps). I’m enjoying watch them eat those words.

On Nov. 22, 2007, the Caps had a whooping 6 wins, a team of kids, fired their coach, and then promptly took off on a torrid 108-pt pace to snag a playoff spot. In one week, it will be Nov. 22, 2009, and the Canes have 2 wins, a coach with a big contract, have no cap flexibility, and a roster than can politely be termed “old.” I don’t see history repeating itself.

Sorry, Carolina.

I agree completely. They’ve been playing with fire for a few years now and they just happen to be paying for it this year. I realize Rutherford has a sterling reputation but I think he’s been acting shortsightedly for a few years now.

Maybe he’s just not that good. He’s obviously got a ton of physical tools but playing defense is most certainly not all physical. He dominated in Juniors because he was a man among boys. Since his rookie year he hasn’t really shown that he can translate it to this level.

I’m tending to agree, though being top four on that rotation is no slouch. I saw Tim Connelly walked around Dion like he was a statue—sick move, true but a thorough escuela. I wonder if he (or 52) makes team.ca

I feel like Phaneuf would need an Alessandra-Ambrosio-level hot season to make the Canadian blueline. Offhand, I’d bet the first 6 that don’t make the team are better than the next best starting d-corps.

For those of you in the JRHL, I’m looking for trades. There are some of you who need upgrades in the crease, or SOG/PPG/G. Kipper’s stats aren’t going to be amazing, but he’s going to start in 70+ games and probably win 40 of them. He’ll get you some goalie categories.

CBo stunk up the joint tonight

Sorry guys.

In good news, NYI destroyed BOS tonight. I don’t know which makes me feel better, that we look so much better for not getting killed by NYI or that the forces of good (Scott Gordon and his aggressive skating tactics) defeated the forces of evil (a French-Canadian operating a trap).

Not sure on the date of this. May have been posted before. I think after the Pens game on Sunday it's been thrown out into the open about media bias. I actually don't mind McGuire, but I can't stand Milbury. At least they know our feelings towards them.
