Tuesday Caps Clips: Ovi Jokes, Nyles Clears
Your savory breakfast links:
- So it was all a big joke. Ha ha? [ESPN.com]
- Of course, that doesn't stop some writers from speculating that there's trouble brewin' between the Caps and their franchise player. Silly. [The Star]
- In the other news of the day, Michael Nylander cleared waivers and George McPhee announced that... he'll talk about it today... [Caps365 (video)]
- ... which means it's time to see who's got sources. The leader in the clubhouse? Tarik El-Bashir (who did a great job all day at CI) with his Dynamo Minsk nugget.
- Unrelated, one would assume, Minsk is the team by which Glen Hanlon was just recently canned. [FanShot]
- Only one U.S.-based team is ahead of the Caps in season-to-date paid admissions. Amazing. [Ted's Take]
- And that's with the Caps being a great bargain. [WTimes]
- Speaking of the Times, big shake-up over there yesterday that had better not impact our hockey coverage. [Washington Post]
- A new batch of power rankings are out with the Caps up three spots to fourth at The Hockey News, up one to second at The Sporting News, up three to second at the L.A. Times and holding at fifth at TSN.
- Mike Knuble is a fab puck deflector... [Behind The Net]
- ... a skill that helped him net Hockey Night's First Star for the weekend. [CBC]
- Alex Ovechkin, Mike Green and Boyd Gordon filmed a quick message for the
ladiesfans on Saturday night. [GreenLife52.com] - Semyon Varlamov is "fighting for the 3rd goalie spot" for the Russian Olympic Team. At this point, you've got to say he's got a worse chance to win that fight than Matt Bradley has to win his next tilt (and Brads is currently riding an 11-fight winless streak, per HockeyFights.com). [@dchesnokov]
- "Tomas Fleischmann" and "fantasy" together in an article that doesn't use "Bruce Boudreau" to link the two. [ESPN]
- Speaking of Gabby, if there's one thing we'd like to see more of in his "Behind the Bench" segment, it's specifics about the current team. We get our wish this week, and you'll never guess about whom he gushes. [Capitals]
- Elliotte Friedman's weekly column is a must-read - click for the Alex Semin zinger, stay for the knowledge. [CBC]
- Four American Caps honor the troops. [Capitals, Caps365 (video)]
- The Caps have three of the top 19 players in the "Three Stars Standings." [NHL.com]
- From the "No [Stuff]" file, the Caps are D.C.'s Best Team. [Express Night Out]
- Peter Bondra's on the list of next year's first-time-Hall-of-Fame-eligible players. It would be a pretty major surprise if he was elected. [Slam!]
- Bear Tracks! [LDN]
- On this date back in 2001, the Caps traded Trevor Linden and a second round pick in 2002 to Vancouver for a 2002 first round pick with which they selected Boyd Gordon and a 2003 third rounder (that the Caps moved to Edmonton for Mike Grier and which the Oil used on Zack Stortini).
- Finally, happy 53rd birthday to Greg Carroll.

For those who follow it, is Friedman’s Twitter worth following? I’m reading more of his stuff and wondered if I should just get it over with.

Interesting charity run by the Robitaille’s (from the Friedman link). Does anyone know if we have an organization in Virginia that helps Foster children in trouble after they turn 18?
We have a kid here in Lynchburg, who has some learning disabilities, who was turned loose by the foster parents at 18 who has nothing. He is staying at a organization right now (can’t remember name but a national one) but can only stay for 10 days. Trying to find the kid a job, but even that is hard when he doesn’t have a dime.
In honor of Veterans Day
But mostly ‘cos I have the day off, I plan to attend the morning skate at Kettler tomorrow. It’s optional for the team, but I am hopeful that most of the players will participate. The skate starts at ten. Anyone interested in meeting up is welcome to e me @ my profile, so we can decide what color bandana is appropriate for Rink Rats.
I’m going to the game later, of course, and just had a thought that between practice and gametime, I might visit Arlington Cemetery to pay my respects. I haven’t been there in a very long time.

Speaking of sources, JP...
The venerable Wikipedia has already updated Michael Nylander’s status:
“Michael Nylander (born October 3, 1972) is a Swedish professional ice hockey centre signed with the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL). He is currently playing on loan with HC Dynamo Minsk of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).”
and
“November 9, 2009- Loaned to HC Dynamo Minsk for remainder of 2009-2010 season. "
Had to be a merry prankster aka “optimistic Rink reader”.
It gets better:From Pennlive.com
From Pennlive.com (on the Hershey bears boards) -
“(Speculation is that) Dynamo Minsk cut Josef Boumediene possibly to make room for Nylander?”

Haha not quite… I’m a pretty calm guy at work which is a direct contrast to how I play on the ice so that was the first insight people got to how I am outside of work.
There’s a memorial service program that made its way around people’s emails for the “Washington Deadskins.” It’s probably common in your office. I made sure that went on my wall.
I showed up in my department Friday. I’m the hockey nut, we’ve got a New Yorker (and all of his obnoxious New York fandoms), a couple of Skins fans, one person from Pittsburgh who knows little about sports, and a Caps convert, plus me. Needless to say, we got a kick out of the memorial service program.

I work in IT – in my line of work, Saturdays and Sundays are normal and expected, because just about everything major has to be done off-hours. We can do planning and paper-pushing and documentation during the workday, but the actual work has to be done when nobody else is around.

They’re not usually excessive, they’re just weird. Most places will let you leave early in a day if you have to come in on a weekend or late evening. Many will give comp time, and some pay straight overtime.
I tell people when I can do the work – as long as it’s within the off-hours window, I can do it whenever. My officemates know that I have Caps season tickets, so if there’s a home game, I’m not available during the home game. This is okay — most of my coworkers have families, so I will pick up for them when their kids are sick or they need to take their spouse to the doctor or something. It’s a give-and-take.

I’ve worked in IT forever and I think I’ve only ever worked on a Saturday\Sunday when it was by my own choice while I was getting a start up off the ground.
One guy just drove his semi as a float. I guess semis are cool.
Then you don’t do anything related to infrastructure.

I was an Infrastructure Engineer for 3.5 years and never worked on the weekend.
One guy just drove his semi as a float. I guess semis are cool.
How long ago was that? I’ve been working as a network infrastructure engineer for close to 10 years now and for the last five I’ve worked at least two weekends a month. Do you work with smaller businesses and companies?

It’s probably been about 2 years since I did that. No, I work for the largest database company in the world.
Networks are a bit different like you said, and you’re usually expected to at least be on call at most places. That’s just not something I would want to be a part of and I’ve done a good job keeping out of the weekend work\on call stuff.
My whole point was just for the people that were asking. IT is a really large field, there are tons of different jobs, and things are run differently everywhere. You could always get into desktop support for instance and just work 9-5 M-F. Or most management positions.
I run my own gaming company now. Which has required me to dabble in a lot of different areas. I just leave all my server stuff with rightscale and amazon ec2 and that’s taken a lot of weight off my shoulders. I can even go on vacation and not worry about checking my phone or email for a week.
One guy just drove his semi as a float. I guess semis are cool.
Ah. Databases. Yeah, generally DBA work is pretty nice about 9-5. Server and network admin / design is absolutely vicious on weekend work, as is anything mainframe-related. Desktop support can be the odd weekend here and there depending on where you are and who your customer is.
I’m nominally rotating on-call, but the reality is that I’m expected to answer my cellphone 24×7×365.

Just because it’s a database company doesn’t mean there is only db work…the company has over 100,000 people so there is about every type of IT job you can imagine that is needed internally.
One guy just drove his semi as a float. I guess semis are cool.
I think you’ve been lucky, to be honest. Very lucky. Throughout my IT career, call center to desktop support to infrastructure, I have always had to work nights and weekends, and not as an occasional thing.

Linden Trade...
I knew that Gordo came to the Caps as part of the Linden deal, but I had no idea that the Caps also landed Grier, and that eventually that pick ended up being Stortini.
Seems like everyone got something out of it. :)
I don’t know if it’s true or not, but Linden asked for the trade due to family issues, in that his family were still living in Vancouver during the years he was with the Islanders, Montreal and Washington…

I was taking a gander at the Rink salary cap info last night, and noticed Varly’s first name is still spelled “Simeon”!
As for the Washington Times shakeup, it’s not exactly my favorite paper (for obvious political reasons), so I’ve always been hesitant to read Corey’s work. I know this is dumb since hockey doesn’t have anything to do with politics, but it still irks me. Thoughts?

Sadly I have same feeling.
(jumping on my soapbox)-
From a distance I don’t think Bondra doesn’t really have a bunch of guys who vote in his corner. Stasny may be the only one who would plead his case. Maybe Emerick as well, as Mike always seemed to be a big Bondra guy when he did Devils vs Caps games.
Baseball and basketball at least over the last decade or so have done a better job and trying to rectify past wrongs. Football is on par which RNR HOF in my mind. Refusal to allow for different categories of players or genres makes the places at best incomplete.
Hockey hall straddles the 2 sets in my mind. Finally inducting Larionov was a start. A crime it took so long. I’d really like to see Bure in. You can’t tell me he doesn’t deserve it with his numbers. To me he’s like Gayle Sayers in NFL. Shortened career, but a bona fide all-star level player. Speaking of Russians, Makarov needs to be in and probably Krutov and Kasatonov as well. The Green Unit was just sick. Best 5 man tandem I’ve ever seen play together.
I assume that means Cammi Granato & Hayley Wickenheiser among others will be in soon since the Hall has joined the 20th century in 21st century starting in 2010.
I really wish they would get a more diverse selection committee. It’s all male and almost exclusively North American, heck almost exclusively Canadian. It’s not 1972 anymore.

Also, does anyone know who is the U.S. based team ahead of the Capitals at the gate? I would guess Philly.
One guy just drove his semi as a float. I guess semis are cool.
Are we talking dollars or bodies? I was assuming bums in seats, so of the likely choices, who’s got the largest arena? My guess is Philly because it’s pretty new and probably larger than Verizon.
no, Chicago holds right around 19,000 for hockey this season.
I can’t remember what Xcel Center holds.
United Center used to hold 20,000ish. They removed some seats this season (I don’t know why). IIRC, Joe Louis is sorta small, but they do offer standing room tickets.
The hockey configuration for Pittsburgh’s new Consol Energy Center will have eighteen thousand comma eighty seven seats.
18,087.

we’re talking cold hard cash. So if you fill your place up by giving away tons of tickets, or steeply discounting to get butts in seats, you make less money, even if you have higher attendance.
Actually, I do think it’s bodies. Caps are below average in ticket price, so I don’t see how they could come in 6th in revenue, even with a “sellout” every game.
