At the very least it seems to me the team plays less complacently when they have injuries to important players.
by red army line on Nov 1, 2009 4:13 PM EST up reply actions
well it’ll be tough lineup wise cause whereas the Caps keep 8 d-men, they dont have any room for scratched forwards. So say Greenies out, Sloan could conceivably take his spot, but then who takes Nicks spot and Sloans spot since he was playing forward since Gordos injured and considered week to week? This will be tough finding a body in such short notice unless theyve already recalled Giroux.
i dont see that on coreys blog but i did forget that Laing is gonna play so it wont be so tough, but that means that Erskine would need to come back from his bruised hand so Sloan could play forward if Green is out.
laing came back pretty fast from H1N1. a friend of mine has it and apparently it can kinda linger a while
Eh, for me it went away pretty quick. Maybe even quicker than Q.

Per Corey:
Ovechkin-Morrison-Knuble
Fleischmann-Backstrom-Semin
Laich-Steckel-Bradley
Laing-Aucoin-Clark
by sixsevenfiftysix on Nov 1, 2009 4:42 PM EST reply actions
I definitely am happy to see Ovechkin and Semin split up but I tend to prefer Backstrom between O and K. And interesting placement of Bradley with respect to Clark.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Nov 1, 2009 4:44 PM EST up reply actions
Backstrom makes Semin happier to play on line 2; that way he has 2/3’s of line 1 instead of being banished by himself.
It also allows a 19/28 penalty killing combination instead of throwing all the lines out of whack.
by Knee high to a duck on Nov 1, 2009 4:53 PM EST up reply actions
Rather, allows 19 and 28 to PK without throwing all the lines out of whack.

Re: Bradley vs. Clark, could be as simple as separating Laich and Clark so both bottom lines have someone to crash the net.

That may be the secret to scoring against them. Tire their PKers for 2 minutes, then score immediately after the penalty ends

Not sure if it had been said earlier didn’t read the whole thread but these line combos allow us to put back together the Brads/Stecks/Laich line that owned it up in the playoffs last year.
And that line is doing some damage.

really? my wife has gcl to watch her Avs and they normally tune out intermissions and commercials…odd.
They can be really inconsistent. I’ve found that the most common configuration is to block commercials and allow studio-type or in-arena intermission stuff, but some games show even the commercials.

Anyone could sink that with a net that wide open. Good skating but helped out heavily by Theodore.
by TFG on Nov 1, 2009 6:13 PM EST up reply actions
ah i see, so we’re blaming that on Theodore but not on the defenseman because we give Nash the credit there?
I’d say they both were left pretty jockless after that one.

If they play as loose as they do with him, probably. If they know they need to work harder with out safety net number 8, they might hold it togetherish.

by TFG on Nov 1, 2009 6:50 PM EST up reply actions
from tarik:
Alex Ovechkin left today’s game at 6:10 of the second period with what could be an pectoral/shoulder/left arm injury.
The two-time MVP appeared to be injured earlier in the during a scrum near the Columbus bench that began when Jason Chimera bumped Ovechkin as the two passed one another. Ovechkin responded with a two-handed shove, setting off a fracas that included Jared Boll coming over and grabbing Ovechkin.
Chimera was apparently still angry about getting trucked by Ovechkin into the side boards late in the first period.
After the fracas, Ovechkin appeared to be favoring the left side of his upper body while he sat in the penalty box (for roughing). When he came out, he finished his next shift, but skated right to bench and headed to the dressing room.
He has not played since.
I’ll have an update when the team makes an announcement.
Per FSN Ohio, GMGM says Ovechkin may return in the third.

That whole play was set up by the Ref’s interference on Laich. As soon as that happened I knew bad things were about to happen.

Crosscheck no goalie interference yes no call never!
Horseshit call on Pothier. The players skated into each other and one fell; penalty on the other
by LangwayWasTheKing on Nov 1, 2009 7:51 PM EST reply actions
I thought the penalty on Ovi was worse where he checked the guy who received the pass skating towards the goal and they called interference. I did see that one.
Guy went down way too easy, but shame on Pothier for giving him the opportunity.

by Gould Old Days on Nov 1, 2009 8:09 PM EST up reply actions
Yes, obviously Pothier isn’t truly strong enough to make him fall like he did, but you can’t give him that opportunity. Worst part was Pothier had decent position to deny him the puck anyway if it came his way.
A man gotta have a code
Referees like face time maybe they should just STFU for a change
People get tackled going to the net the whole game. When we fall its diving, when someone else falls its a penalty. Knuble’s play was stupid (has not completely recovered losses I.Q. points from playing for Flyers)
by LangwayWasTheKing on Nov 1, 2009 7:57 PM EST reply actions
Overall that game sucked from about every possible angle.
Most annoying plays – Semin’s stick handling turnovers. Ovi’s turnovers at the point come in second place.
Ovi’s injury is obvious concern.
JT’s bad luck on dasher board and goalie stick goals.
Refs calls that were all over the map.
They keep finding ways to lose games when leading in the 3rd. At some point its either corrected or the chickens will come home to roost come late April.
A man gotta have a code
DC teams never fail to ruin my nights & weekends

My husband and I aren’t in that category. We’re rooting for Philly. (My husband was born 30 miles south of Philly but had moved around a lot.) So his rooting interests were Braves, Phillies, Senators, Orioles, and now the Nats. He’s a die hard Yankee hater from way back.
He actually used to be a Flyer fan until the Caps came into existence.
Has Boudreau said anything to the press about this game that’s going to get him fined yet?
Atta dinnin stick a who!
Good or bad officiating, the team wasn’t skating like they respected the Jackets, and it bit them. You have to play every team with the effort and intensity they showed in the opener against Boston, and they haven’t played like that since. This is getting old fast.
Yeah, officiating was bad, but this team has a knack for taking stupid ticky tack penalties, and the refs are calling them. So, my first thought to stopping that is stop doing little ticky tack stuff.
Also, re: Umberger’s trip on Jurcina – yeah, should have been called. Referee, however, could have also called a high stick on Jurcina, who (uncontrolled) whacked Umberger in the head on his fall. Less needing to be called, but one could certainly make an argument for it.
Lastly, Theo’s played way too damn well for me to throw him under the bus after this game. I didn’t think the defense played well at all, and i didn’t think the team played with any fire except for some after whistle scrums and a few minutes of well put together sequences. The fact of the matter is it’s still nice having the team we hated years ago – a team that could be outhustled, out-worked, and out-played, frankly, but Talent was good enough to steal them points. I’d just rather see hard work.
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.
