[FanShot]
- Alex Ovechkin on his teammates after Friday night's loss: "You can even say that some players are not ready physically." Maybe he just meant that Nicklas Backstrom was a bit under the weather. [Examiner]

- The Caps have high expectations. Uh, yeah. [Washington Times]
- Happy Halloween from the Atlanta Thrashers, who apparently are in a position to talk trash. [FanShot]
- Pierre Lebrun reports that, with regards to a contract extension, "things aren't going great on the Semin front." (He also fails to mention Shaone Morrisonn's expiring contract, FWIW.) [ESPN]
- Back home, they're taking notice of native son Jose Theodore's hot start. [Montreal Gazette]
- Mike Wise reviews "Gabby"... [Washington Post]

- Happy 63rd birthday to original Cap Bill Lesuk and happy 52nd to Brent Tremblay.
- Finally, on an administrative note, thanks to all of you for making October the best month (traffic-wise, at least) in Rink history. Visits were up 130% and page views 200% over October, 2008 (our last pre-SB Nation month). Here's to a big November.

Wouldn’t that be “on a f…ing administrative not”?

If that one bothers you, don’t go to a Bears game. It was a quiet night in the crowd last night, despite the win, and Greg Amadio makes a comment that at least 11 rows back heard clear as day (I was in the upper level, so I didn’t hear it myself):
“What did you say, you f’ing SOB?”

JP, there’s a reason this month was so awesome. The recap have been informative and quick, the clips have been consistent and full of new content, and the analysis posts have been abundant and incredibly intelligent. The communtiy that you have built here is one of the smartest ones in the entire blogosphere. Just like the Caps, the only place Japers Rink can go right now is up. We are all excited to be with you for the ride. Congrats

Thanks JP for this site. The quality of information is incredible. I don’t post, but I do read everyday. Thanks again.

I read the LeBrun story and immediately caught that. When something like that is botched after naming just about everyone else, you wonder about the writer. On the other hand, he does seem to be pretty well tied in to things, so who knows? But he’s not getting that information from the team, so it has to be coming from the agent, and we all know how agents like to negotiate in the press. Eh.
And a rah, rah to the Rink!
I read that article and I just see it for speculations sake. Speculation that teams ’can’t keep so and so’ helps drum up interest and get things going.
Yes, the Caps are going to have to work out a deal with Semin, and yes, it will be slightly difficult (especially with his injury history and his “brain lapses”) to get him done with the other players needing deals, but they have the money. Semin also says he wants to be here, and at the end of the day, I think if he stays in the NHL, it probably will be here.

Well, he is still an RFA this time around. What’s even more scary is the next time around. I’d hate to see Semin on the Rangers or ’Canes.

Meh, seeing him on the Isles wouldn’t be ALL bad. I agree with the rest of your list, though.

I really hated the Islanders in the 70’s and 80’s and fear their rise in the next few years. And seeing Semin with them is something I don’t want to see.
Neither PHI or PIT is going to have the cap space for him without giving up one of their core players, which I don’t see happening.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
I tend to not listen to what national writers write in contract stuff because they get fed a lot of BS. Pierre’s work seems to have declined quality wise over the last year or two. Maybe its related to who he’s been hanging out with.

Guilty by association, judged by who I know. Can’t keep all my friends out of trouble when we’ve got no place to go.

Impressive reference. Produced by one of my favorite punks to boot.
Thanks. After watching James Wisniewski go after Shane Doan last night, I was reminded of another quote from Omar. “Come at the king, you best not miss.”

Ditto. And a big thank you for what you add to the experience of being a Caps fan!
JP, I would only expect traffic to increase further as more and more people find the Rink. I mean its only the best sports blog on the planet.
I’ve said it before – The content and analysis is outstanding . Adding Capschick recently has only added to the quality around here. In addition, the community of commentators (myself excluded) bring about intelligent discussion that is far too lacking on the rest of the interwebs. Even the snark is of high quality.
Keep up the great work!

Glad Stuff is going well at the rink...
…but be careful, otherwise Colby Armstrong might show up and egg your house too!
Let's go Caps!
So here’s a subplot for tonight’s game: Columbus is very deep at defense, and they haven’t started out particularly well. If they continue to look bad, they’d be a potential trading partner for a strong defensive defenseman. Here’s their capgeek. Hejda, Tyutin and Commodore could all look pretty good in Caps uniforms…
I’d do Hejda for Fehr in a second.
Atta dinnin stick a who!
Hejda for Fehr and a pick probably makes more sense for them.

Kind of off topic, but fits the general thread of the day. Needing background noise for lunch, I turned on NHL Network and got game 6 of Calgary/Tampa in 2004. As it wasn’t the Caps playing, I know I didn’t pay as much attention back then (aside from rooting for Calgary, of course). Also, I knew a lot less then. It was already into the third period, so I don’t know how bad it was otherwise, but if you go with what the announcers were saying, Calgary should have won that game (and the Cup) in the third period. Goal was scored, but never officially reviewed. Wow. Anyone remember what the post-game press was back then? (I’m sure if I google correctly I can find something, but just wondering.) Relevant Caps connection — lots of love for Chris Clark from the announcers in that game.
Speaking of end of month marks, how about our goalies.
Sv% GAA
.915 2.66
.895 3.20
Which is our starter and which is our backup? Which of those numbers produced 5-0 start and which produced 3-2-3?
Does our team just play better for the Russian born? Or has he just been put in games where the offense has a better chance of bailing him out?
Varlamov got a gift W that he didn’t earn against SJS because Theo got hurt at the end of the first. Theo got the L hung on him against PHI even though Varlamov really deserves that L. That adjustment makes the numbers look a little better but doesn’t fully explain it. I think BB may have played Varlamov against easier opponents. Varlamov got the starts against TOR and NAS (which was a shoot out win) so that could be a factor as well.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
Tarik says Laing is back in the lineup tonight. Laing, meanwhile, says what we all were thinking: “The swine flu? What? You have to be kidding me… I guess I only get the rare injuries.”
"Camaraderie, that's what the Washington Capitals are all about."
