Red Wings forward Johan Franzen has suffered a torn ACL in his left knee and expected to be out of the lineup a minimum of four months.
The injury occurred during last night’s 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks in which Franzen tallied the eventual game winning goal during the second period.

Didn’t see it mentioned, felt compelled to make a Fanshot. Hey, formatting came out all nice and everything! For a first go, that wasn’t nearly as garbled as I was worried it’d be.
Yeah, talk about a Pyrrhic victory for the Wings over the ’Hawks. Big loss.

Huh. A “Related FanShot” popped up in the sidebar (loves me some SBN linky magic yes I do) with a eerily familiar theme…
IS PAЯTY NOW
Oh, god, no. I love Mule. (ok, I love Mule except when he plays the Caps.) Ugh, this is not going to make Mr. Bird a happy camper at all. No no no, he’s already upset with me over that whole Twins-Tigers thingy…..
I assume he’s going to have this repairs ASAP and miss the Olympics in hope of being ready for next season?
miss the Olympics
This is the the part that gets me. Like with Markov, if the Wings/Canadiens can’t make the playoffs without the guy, then they don’t belong in the playoffs. Hopefully both players will be back and healthy enough to really contribute in the Season That Counts™.
But there’s no silver lining for Sweden or Russia, my two favorite teams coming into the Olympics.

same here. While I think Sweden is deep enough (and well coached enough, ahem) to survive losing Franzen, it certainly is a huge blow to the gold medal hopes. And I know for a lot of these guys, representing their home country in the Olympics is such a huge deal, so I’m just gutted for him, because this would have been his first Olympic team.
In a good, solid NHL career, you get what, 12 chances to win a Stanley Cup? 15?
These guys get three chances to win a gold medal in the Olympics. Four tops. It must be so hard to have one of them taken away.

Probably not even four – it takes an enormous talent to be in the Olympic team discussion for 16 years worth of career, no matter what team you play for. I’d say most guys are only going to get consideration during their primes and even then they may only get one shot. Poor Mule.

Well you don’t really have to be great for 16 years to make it in 4 Olympics; that would be the number for 5 Olympics. 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022. A solid 12 years can get you in 4 Olympics, but it has to line up right.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
That’s true, but the mean is going to be two smack in the middle between the two olympics, so let’s call it 14 years. The guys that are playing Olympic-Gold caliber hockey for nearly a decade and a half are few and far between.

True. Then again it depends what team you are on. It’s easier to be a 4x Olympian for Slovakia than for Canada.

Right – Bondra doesn’t make 4 Canadian teams, but he makes 4 Slovak teams.
Of course, your odds of winning a gold are much better in a given tournament if you’re playing for the Tre Kroner or Team Canada than they are playing for Slovakia.

It’s probably a lot easier for the rest of Team Sweden to take because they won the Gold last time around. The majority of the Team they ice this year is going to already have a gold. For Franzen it’s obviously devastating (though 4 months does leave open the possibility that he can play in the Olympics) and it’s tough for a guy like Backstrom who is getting his first shot at gold (though he’ll have a couple more in the future, I expect).
