I know it’s early, but with 5 in 3 I gotta think 70 in 82 is a given, barring injury.

Agreed – Mike Richards is a lock for 70.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Given the adjusted stats, that would be close to the greatest goal-scoring season in history. I would hesitate to call that a lock for anyone.

?? Why does that deserve a CI’d.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
Yeah. You must have missed the part where I said “why.” All I see is a reasonable comment that suggests it would be difficult for AO to have one of the greatest goal scoring seasons ever (after only 3 games no less) and that it certainly isn’t a lock. What about that is CI worthy?
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
I don’t think either of the two comments were CLED’able(?)

I was saying that Knee high was CI’d… meaning he was “tricked” into a serious response to a comment I read was mostly about SNARK and exageration.
Oh, ok. Thanks for the clarification. I thought the comment Knee high responded was actually serious, but who knows. I just misinterpreted your CI.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
You might well be right. I very well may have given Ben’s comment to much snark. I forget that he isn’t really a local “rinker”.
As much as I would like to believe he’s serious, calling it a given seems like a stretch to me. Can Ovie do it? Yes. Is he the most likely player to do it? Yes. But J.P.’s comment about Richards being a lock for 70 goes to show that there is no way 70 in 82 is a lock for anyone.
And that’s how I read Knee high’s comment.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
Which is how it was intended.
I don’t see anything especially snarky there – Ben is an occasional commenter here and it looked like he was referencing the Fanhouse link about 70 in 82 and what pace Ovie would have to score at to get there.
Maybe he’s dryer than most, but that humor doesn’t come across in text without a pretty deep rapport with the other posters. Sometimes it doesn’t come across in person without a fairly deep rapport.

Wow, didn’t mean to be at all tricky here. I was being sincere in saying that with Ovechkin playing well, averaging slightly under a goal a game (ie 70 in 82) looks to be a pretty good bet.

Best line on the broadcast last night...
“Pronger pulls back to avoid the hit from Ovechkin.”
And Ovechkin promptly puts the puck behind Emery. Despite the parade to the penalty box and some of the suspect defense from our guys, that line made my night!
I also thought it was funny that the guy calling the game with Joe B. said “That’s not goaltender interference!” replaying the Laich penalty on the way to commercial.
It wasn’t called that way. It was called as just a plain old interference penalty.
…and it wasn’t that, either.
If you've read this far...seek help.
I said it last night, but that officiating was about par for the course in Philadelphia.

Despite all the penalties, the own goal, the softies...
didnt 90% of us think “Game over” when the Caps had the PP in the final minute AND 1st minute of OT?
Yes the Hartnell goal was an own goal and you can’t tell me otherwise.
It was…Theodore knocked it in with his leg, from my view. And yeah, I thought “game over” when the Caps had that late power play, especially when they were 4-on-3 in the first minute of OT. When they didn’t score, I thought, “this will not end well.”
If you've read this far...seek help.
I wanted too – but I didn’t like the way our PP was playing throughout the game.
Philly knows how to attack our PP. they do it well.
I think we needed more knuble on the PP
Philly eats up those cross ice plays the Caps love on the PP. You’re right, put Knuble in front and fire the ouck at the goalie. The way Emory was giving up rebounds something good wopuld have happened.

Who do you think is more concerned about their goaltending this morning; Washington-whose rookie, quasi-backup keeper let’s in four or Philly-whose #1 goalie lets in five ( and looks bad on several)?
I’ll take it a step further and add in the defense. For all the defensive talent the Flyers have (and they have a lot with Pronger, Timonen, Coburn and their slew of solid defensive forwards) their team defense left a lot to be desired last night. I know they were facing a good offense (the first good offense they have faced this year), but so were the Caps and people are getting all over their D and goaltending. And I don’t think this is quite a fluke game thing for the Flyers, as they weren’t exactly shutting it down defensively last year (although that was without Pronger).

Was anyone else upset by Joe’s call of the game-winning goal? That “happy birthday” call is one of our best memories from last year!!! Why did he have to ruin it by replacing “Shaone Morrisonn” with “Daniel Briere”?? Thanks, Joe.
I think he tries hard to not appear biased in favor of the Caps. It is odd hearing him get so excited about a Flyers victory though.

I don’t think Joe B is a Caps fan. I think he has great relationships in town that he values, and he wants the guys he knows to do well, but he’s a consummate professional and one of the best in the business, and we’re lucky to have him. He called it that way because he loves hockey, and it was a hell of a hockey moment.
Yeah, that call pissed me off. It pissed me off a lot. But that’s because Danny Fucking Briere scored an overtime goal against the Caps. The actual call had nothing to do with that.

I disagree. I think he may not necessarily have been when he initially took the Caps’ gig, but I think he is, now. You’ll notice every now and then on Vs. telecasts that he’ll catch himself calling AO “Alex” instead of “Ovechkin” and that he will, on occasion, defend the Caps/Ovechkin/DC/what have you. It’s too hard not to be a fan when you’re so familiar with everyone you regularly call.

I think you’re both right (and pretty) – Joe B.‘s a professional, but he’s certainly got a vested interest in the Caps doing well, so he wants them to do well – he roots for them. But I don’t think it colors the way he views the games themselves.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I don’t know if it’s a developing slight bias, or the fact that he knows the Caps better than any other team (or at least he should). I think a little bit of both, but he’s still pretty impartial on CSN broadcasts.

Anyone want to take a stab at what the defense pairings will be at practice today?
I’ll go:
Morrisonn-Green
Poti-Schultz
Jurcina-Pothier
Erksine-Sloan
and assume the last pair sits Thursday.
You don’t think Sloan gets in? I think he’ll get in and be Pothier’s partner.
by DrinkingPartner on Oct 7, 2009 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions
I think Mo, Green, Poti, and Jurcina are all locks and Pothier looks pretty good after sitting last night. That’d only leave one spot, and I think Boudreau takes Schultz over Sloan considering that he played well in Philly.
I think Erskine can be a serviceable defenseman, but after last night I’m wondering about this whole “enforcer” role that’s being foisted upon him with the departure of Brasher. I don’t know if it’s such a good idea to ask him to focus on something outside of his primary responsibility.
Erskine improved a great deal last season and I’d hate to see him backslide because he feels he has to fill some role that probably won’t benefit us on a nightly basis.
He didn’t suck last night because he was asked to be an enforcer. He sucked last night because he was asked to skate top 4 minutes.

All of those penalties last night reminded me of this beauty:

(It means accountability from the players)
One guy just drove his semi as a float. I guess semis are cool.
Speaking of the Caps being “a one-line team”:
I had a heated argument with a Flyers fan yesterday. He gave me the familiar “Caps are only good because they play in the worst division in hockey” argument. So I looked up the stats, and there were some interesting facts.
The Caps went 14-2-4 last season against Atlantic, the “best” division in the NHL. Not a single Atlantic team could equal that record against Southeast teams, the best being the Flyers, 13-5-2 vs. SE. In fact, there’s only one team in the East with a better record against SE than the Caps’ record against Atlantic—Boston (15-4-1 vs. SE).
Yes, Southeast is undeniably the worst division in the NHL, but the Caps would be a top flight team regardless of where they played. And I’m quite satisfied with that.
"My face is my mask."
A comment about the Versus coverage
Remember during the playoffs last years when they showed the Caps’ whiteboard in the locker room with the “keys to the game”?
And how they promised to never do that again?
Well last night they showed the Flyers whiteboard as a coach was basically drawing circles diagramming a play as they went into commercial prior to the OT period.
Bah.
IS PAЯTY NOW
Not the same, unless there’s a coach with a TV and Bruce wearing an earpiece. They do that all the time, and I agree that they shouldn’t.
If you could see it in the arena with binoculars, it’s fair game.

Corey and Tarik reporting that Sloan is practicing as a forward and might be a rover tomorrow.
Maybe play with an edge, be a little more physical -- maybe be more of a prick out there.
So…they sit Kane or Laing, dress Sloan as a F, and have him available to play D? This is kinda odd…
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
So they play Sloan, who would be a healthy scratch and save the daily cap hit (small as it might be) by having Kane up here, who didn’t make much of an impact when he was in there. If it was pennies against the Cap his that forced Bourque out, it seems this was a cap-saving issue coupled with a realization that they wouldn’t miss Kane in the lineup.
If you've read this far...seek help.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — I’d rather see 11-7 if it helps keep the players fresh.
Sloan at F is not 11-7.

I am taking my smoker situation to a whole ’nother level. I currently have 2 – an offset firebox model and an old refrigerator that I converted into a smoker.
A buddy of mine and I are building an all-brick smoke house. Exterior dimensions will be 48 × 36 × 48. By my rough calculations, we should be able to smoke like 18 chickens at a time, or 6 entire hams, or 8 pork shoulders, or 35 pounds of sausage.
Poured the slab last weekend, and while it cures this weekend we’ll cut and weld the door frame, hinges, and door assembly (the handle is going to be the flywheel off of a 1940’s-era combine). Following weekend we will brick it up and put on the roof.
Materials:
9 sacks of Quick-Krete
350 bricks (250 solid, 100 with holes)
10 each 120-inch lengths of rebar
scrap 2 × 4 (for the frame of the slab)
wheelbarrow
shovels
welder
angle grinder or cutting torch (nether of us have a torch so we’re using grinders, which isn’t the safest thing)
4-5 cases of beer.

I like the big green egg. The only drawback I find is the capacity, and I’ve had a hard time doing a real cold smoke – say temps of 80-85 degrees.
As for the basement, this is definitely an outdoor apparatus. Even if you vented the smoke to the outside, I don’t think you could ever get it to be totally air tight. Then you’ve got the firebox to deal with, and for safety’s sake I think that’s much better outside.

Is this just me? None of the other sites I visit regularly are behaving strangely.

Nevermind
The posting/scrolling issues I was having are rectified by switching to Safari, but it’s still not keeping track of which posts are new/marked. My “z” button is impotent. Grrrr.

I’ve had the opposite experience. I was using Safari the other night and all my replies were going to the wrong comments. I switched to Firefox and it worked fine. Very strange.
