I’m a little surprised Varlamov gets the start tonight. I’m not necessarily saying I’m against it or don’t see the value in the decision…just that I’m surprised.
Boudreau announced that JT was his starter, and JT got the start in Boston…AND played very well. It just seems that if you were, in fact, the “starter”, you wouldn’t be sitting on the bench for two straight games at this time of the year.
Either way, I feel pretty good about either one of these guys right now, so let’s go get ’em!

I can’t say I’m happy with Varlamov going tonight. I was hoping to see Theo…I never thought I’d say that.
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.
Especially one that offers a tiny little bit of redemption.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
How’s this for a rotation: For every three games, Theo starts the first, Varly starts the second, and then whoever played better starts the third.

Dear G.O.D.,
Do I count? I could probably start every third game on that standard.

Predictions, gotta leave soon for The Front Page!
The good:
Backstrom gets a real nice highlight-reel ES goal tonight
Laich gets a goofy PP goal
The bad:
PK unit gives one up
The Care Bears get cute and get burned
The ugly:
Let’s just hope it doesn’t go to a shootout
The wildcard:
Alexander Ovechkin – can the Flyers solve him? Without boxing in the rest of the DC sniper brigade, I mean?
Let’s go Caps!
IS PAЯTY NOW
My keys to the game:
- Can the Caps D stay with the Flyers’ forwards enough to keep their scoring chances to a reasonably low level; and
- Will Emery wilt under the Caps pressure?
If Emery holds up, I think the Flyers look better on paper. They have the D to hang with the Caps shock troops up front, and I like their speed advantage against the Caps D.
But that’s a big “if”…if they play simple and pay the price for puck possession, the Caps can come at you in waves.

Zephyr, I just want to let you know you’re a personal hero of mine. For what it’s worth, a Flyers Pronger jersey at this point is laughable when a Flyers fan could get a Carter or Richards jersey.
You know what you did. Well done.
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.
i’m confused…
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.
Pertains to this thread on the Flyers SB site…
So much for collegial relations.
I do have to say, I rather suspect that JP would ban anyone that came on here and posted that they wanted to see one of the opposition “face down in a pool of blood”…
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
Jesus. Yeah, if someone wrote that about Crosby or whomever, I’m pretty sure it’d be the last thing they wrote here.

Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.
To clarify, it’s in a FanPost, and not representative of the fine work the writers of BSH put out.
But yeah, that wouldn’t fly in a FanPost around here.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
While I appreciate the distinction, it’s on the BSH domain and it reflects upon them that it’s even still up there (and I realize that’s what the second sentence of your comment is getting at). I get a little upset when I see garbage like that on BSH or Pensburgh because I’ve come to expect more from the guys that run those sites.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
I agree. It’s annoying when Hooks, et al come on this site all nicey-nice, and when you go to their site you find them calmly posting in threads with trolls like carolinaeasy.
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
Here’s the thing. Hooks is still the same guy on his site so I don’t think it’s like a two-faced thing. I think he genuinely has a good head on his shoulders and knows his hockey. But there are a couple of regulars over there, carolinaeasy being one, that would be considered trolls if they went anywhere but their Home Blog. Should Hooks have to ignore or ban a regular? Especially when the guy isn’t pissing off the rest of their own regulars or Pens fans? I think it puts Hooks in a tough spot and as long as he is willing to let people hash out the battles when someone does take exception to a troll-erific comment then I have no problem with him turning a blind eye when it’s not absolutely ridiculous.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
But that pool of blood comment is way beyond the bounds of anything that could justify a blind eye.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
Agreed. As much as we hate the Flyers/Penguins, I don’t believe anyone’s written anything of that capacity on this blog. Caps/Flyers is a fierce rivalry, but i guess they should understand that there’s a line.
Best way to get back is a win :D

thank you. I don’t generally pull out the woman card, but even joking about rape of any sort is incredibly offensive to me. Moreso than the “pool of blood” remark (which ranks up there as pretty horrible)
Put the woman card away, you don’t need it on this one. Any man that has a woman he cares about is offended by that statement as well.

"Good crowd out there tonight, boys, let's really try to win this one."
Feisty doesn’t begin to explain it. If I end up with fewer than 8 PIMs (the max I can get without getting kicked out) tonight I’ll be kinda shocked.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
No, I’ve just been watching Caps v. PHI. Seems like I end up in these moods frequently when these teams meet.

If you have D to sit, why do you play your slowest one against a team with such fast forwards?
Of all our iniquities ignorance may be the worst
As badly as the Caps refs played in the 2nd, they’re still in this game.
"Only by great risks can great results be achieved." - Khashayar
The refs didn’t let in the latest goal (which stands as the GWG). Did the refs suck? Yes. But with the mistakes the Caps are making they have nobody to blame but themselves.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
A good team can win despite the refs, right now, this is not that team. The team defense just isn’t there
To be honest I’m not even sure that aside from Erskine (who has been in all games) there is any blame on the D. Lots of PPG and at least 2 soft goals. What are you gonna do?
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
It doesn’t make it easier on a guy like 55 when he sits two games and then only gets 3 mins in the 1st. Not saying there weren’t reasons he only got 3 mins, just that it’s gotta be tough.
Maybe not point-of-attack blame of the D, but there were some failures to clear in there, and then, uh, yeah, Erskine.
Oh I agree it’s probably tough on Schultz, but he has looked fine. It’s the guys that have been in every game that stand out to me (for the wrong reasons). I think I just misunderstood your point.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
And yet every time I look up 4 is out there.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
The concussion last year seemed to knock some “stop sucking at the game of hockey” sense into him.
It’s seems the effect wore off over the summer and the Erskine I know and hate is back on the ice.
Oh joy.

How much of Varly’s getting pulled is his fault and how much is the team’s play? Another way to say that is, was he pulled for his mental health or his play?
He absolutely should have saved the 3rd goal. A shot along the ice that slips under his pad, and it’s not even like Richards has a cannon of a shot.

But the kid has ice water in his veins. Bell centre playoffs rags saves wins down 1-3 first round awesome russian so good.
Maybe the guy that actually plays like he has ice water in his veins should be on the Caps. Every game I watch Varlamov makes me more convinced Neuvirth is the guy of the future.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
I know, it’s blasphemy, but I sort of feel the same. He never seems rattled at all. Athleticism can be highly overrated.
I thought he was skating again. I’ll wait a week or two for him to come back. But Christ, at some point acrobat saves only get you so far when you can’t make the routine ones. When you can’t keep a rebound out of the slot. When you can’t keep yourself from sliding out of the crease when you move laterally. Neuvirth is always calm and in position and does much better with rebounds.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
Kane vs. a tough guy?
So Boyd Kane has played all of six shifts and probably won’t see the ice in the third. Is there a point at which you consider getting a guy who keeps 52 from getting run on every shift? I think no, but it’s worth discussing.
The problem is that the tough guy doesn’t stop 52 from getting run, the big boys dance, or Carcillo gets his face dirty and it keeps right on going.

Oh well, the Flyers were pumped for their home opener, the refs were AWFUL, Varlamov was terrible and we still came out with a point. It could be much worse.

Erskine sucks, Varlamov gave up two bad goals, PK didn’t exactly bail anyone out, we got one point, and it’s the third game of the season. I like what I saw from most of our skaters and I hope BB learned some lessons about a couple other guys. Regular. Season. Means. Dick.

Erskine was fine with Pothier. He didn’t look good with Poti. Also, mediocre officiating, and we knew we weren’t going 82-0. Considering we came out of Philly with a point when only one line on our team was playing well, I’d get out of Philly before they realized we stole a point.

This one hurts, but it’s the regular season when we wake up tomorrow move on from it (since its the flyers – you get till lunch).
We’ll be ok.
All things considered, the Caps scored 5 goals on the “rock” Ray Emery and the “League’s Best D”, while getting rear-ended by the refereeing. Still no regulation losses, and keeping up the 5 GPG average… not too bad.

There’s a difference between saying we need to replace a guy and we need to keep a guy in his role. Obviously, Erskine can not do much more than what he’s capable of, and one of those things is play in four on four situations, and another is be a 1-4 d-man. He may be bad against faster teams too, but not all teams are faster, and considering we were playing the FLYERS I can’t fault Boudreau for playing someone who would bring a little toughness to the line up.
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

Erskine has to be able to catch a guy to lay some punishment on them.
Even if you want him in to keep the Flyers in check, there is no way in hell he should have gotten the 3rd most minutes on D. Erskine is not the #3 D on any NHL team. Ever.

I think if it gets to the point where 5-7 guys are routinely getting 1-4 minutes it’s an indictment of management, regardless of the talent pool of the farm.

I’ve dropped 35 pounds and bumped my gpa by a full point since I quit.

I don’t like Arena, and I don’t really have anything else going on right now until I move in with my fiancee. I’m sure my playing time is going to zero once I do that.

Yeah, I made gladiator seasons 2-4 after leveling during S1 and did it with two characters in s3. You can imagine how much time that took and why I’m so happy I stopped.
Glad you have your priorities in order, I just can’t handle being casual.

The wife has been a huge Felicia Day fan since Dr. Horrible, I think she’a a regular.

Ah, that’s cute, Briere got a goal on his birthday. He’s gonna have a great time at his super sweet 16 this weekend.
Of all our iniquities ignorance may be the worst
You people find my Happy Cake Oven or die trying...
you hear that Erskine, die.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
He should take that french guy with him.

Welcome to a goalie controversy?
Big picture, no big deal. Got a point, put 5 on the board v. Philly/Emery. Erskine, as predicted here on the Rink, struggled with Top 4 minutes. Thought Schultz bought himself more PT.
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
No controversy – just play the hot hand. That hand right now wears number 60.
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.
What number is he gonna wear when he comes to WAS? Theo has 60 now…

Theo’s done nothing so far this year but play well. He should be starting.
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.
He’s played fine. Neuvirth has earned a look.

Agreed on both. I don’t dislike Varly, I just don’t think he’s ready to be an NHL (full load) starter yet.
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.
Until he stops dropping shit like he’s Terrel Owens he doesn’t deserve to keep Neuvirth in the minors.

Look on the bright side: over at PPP they’re ready to commit mass seppuku after the Leafs lost to the Sens.
Varly wasn’t good, but part of tonight was to find out how he’d respond to a hostile environment. We (and hopefully the coaches) all learned something.
And hopefully they learned about Erskine, and what his role should be.
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
so...
How many semi-own goals does Poti have in his Caps career? Make sure you add the two from tonight…shit.

not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but “king’s ransom,” ESPN documentary on the gretzky-to-LA trade, re-airs at 11pm on ESPN2 (and again tomorrow night on ESPN proper.)
What time tomorrow? I’m likely to watch funny comedy or be playing NHL 10 tonight.
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.
Watching South Park now. Sliders is some funny stuff.

Dunno what you mean by that. Maybe I don’t play enough :x

they have some really nice sliders
where you can customize the gameplay. for example, you can make the goalies reaction time better, the game speed slower, etc.

mccormick and schmick’s has great sliders, but if you order any appetizer other than the mussels you’re missing out.

One positive thing to take from tonight’s game? Last year’s team (at this time of the year) would have lost this game 7-3.

Per NHL.com's recap
Briere, on the right post, knocked in the rebound of Kimmo Timonen’s point shot for the winning goal on his birthday.
The Caps entered the third period trailing 4-3, but Semin and Morrisson scored 1:14 apart to give the Capitals the win.
Semin and Ovechkin each had a pair of goals and Bradley had two assists as the Caps won their third straight game.
In the new NHL everybody wins! YAAAAAY!

What is the Rink record on the number of comments?
Right now it’s 1115…well, 1116 including this one.
My tivo cut out at 5 minutes in the game. Darn you Tivo!
Seem like an iffy game, at least from the score, and the fact varly got pulled. Anybody care to give my a two sentence summary?
"And next year it will be ours."
It was an exciting game from start to finish, with way to many power plays for the Flyers. Felt more like a playoff game than the 3rd game of the regular season as far as intensity levels go.

The refs are terrible. John Erskine is also terrible.

Apparently
Ovi scored goal #5 last year on Nov 14. The Richard Trophy winner is more than a month ahead of schedule.
