Second the BS call on the NESN story. Will note further that NESN is, uh, not known for the highest standards of journalistic accuracy when it comes to reporting on sports.

And to be fair, there was probably a leading question edited out. You will notice that Ovechkin was not specifically noted by Chara in his quote. You can be sure they would have printed it if he said it. I think they probably asked a leading question and used it for their agenda.

Definitely. It reads as if the guy got a quote and then juiced up the lead-in.

I wouldn't necessarily call him notorious....

….there are worse slew-footers out there, that’s for sure. However, Ovechkin has been known to throw a slew-foot here and there, especially behind the net. He is very good at getting a leg behind another player while he finishes his checks. Sometimes it may be inadvertent, due to his wide skating stance, but it has been done quite a few times.

by Link_Gaetz on Oct 30, 2009 7:53 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Ovechkin has been known to throw a slew-foot here and there, especially behind the net.

Care to provide any examples as evidence for your claim?

I mean, it’s not like I’m ripping him apart here. Do you want me to watch some game film? I just said he has done it from time to time, but he is certainly not notorious.

Over the next few games, watch him hit defensemen behind the net. If he is coming in from behind, he has a tendency to put a leg behind their’s and sort of follow through with his arms in a pitchforking motion…obviously hard to describe through typing. He is good at getting away with it, so more power to him.

I’m sorry if I offended you.

You didn’t offend me at all (and thanks for pointing it out – I’ll start watching Alex Ovechkin while I’m taking in a Caps game). I just think that something like “Ovechkin has been known to throw a slew-foot here and there” is an assertion that should be backed up with something evidentiary.

Another I think is in—was it Caps 6, Pens 5, from January 2008?—when Ovechkin was skating past Crosby, and as Crosby was passing, he got hit hard. I can’t see Ovie’s feet but Crosby was falling backward. I can picture what you’re saying Link_Gaetz.

by J.P. on Oct 30, 2009 7:59 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

I don’t get it. How do you want me to describe his skating style? He gets low, keeps his “stance wide” and generates a lot of power that way.

You can’t get so upset about someone providing an opinion that goes against one of your star players. Or maybe you can since it is your blog. I try to remain as unbiased as a fan can be. The one follower of this blog, Fehr and Balanced, and I have had some pretty good back and forths where we both have remained impartial.

As with the wide stance thing, and the “watch Ovechkin” thing, I’m sure you’ll pick something minor to pull out of the above paragraphs to pick apart.

by Link_Gaetz on Oct 30, 2009 8:03 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That was just a joke (Google it) – it’s a perfectly fine description of how he skates.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Oct 30, 2009 8:05 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s fine.

Bottom line, I come to the blogs on SBN, because 0% of my co-workers like hockey, and SBN is the only place where I can have a legitimate hockey conversation. If I wanted to discuss fart jokes and laugh at photoshops, I’d go to Pensblog. If I wanted to see what an illiterate 12 year-old thinks of Crosby, I’d go to Puck Daddy.

I am just offering up my opinion. Sometimes I try to be so unbiased that I am actually reverse-bias (what?), and I was just throwing it out there that I have seen Ovechkin slew-foot along the boards, especially behind the net, on more than one occasion.

If I let Sidney Crosby criticism get to me, especially living in Northern Va., I would’ve jumped off of a bridge a long time ago.

I can’t back it up with any evidence at the moment. I am basing it off the 50% of Caps games I at least see a part of. I am not picking the best forum to throw out my opinion. But I have seen Ovechkin slew-foot a few times. Sorry.

by Link_Gaetz on Oct 30, 2009 8:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s cool. You know we welcome opposing views around here, so long as they’re supported. Yours (in this instance) is supported by what you’ve seen. That’s fine. I was just wondering if there were quotes from other players or writers or anything else on point.

And you know that “You can’t get so upset about someone providing an opinion that goes against one of your star players” is total garbage.

by YvonLabresMoustache on Oct 30, 2009 8:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I understand the whole backing up my opinion thing. This will sound like a cop-out, but I can’t look at streaming media at work, and I doubt there will be a YouTube clip called “Highlight Reel of Ovechkin Slew-Foots”

(Slew-Feet?)

To be honest, if everyone disagrees, and they have never seen Ovechkin throw a slew-foot before, then that’s fine. I was just throwing my opinion out there, and seeing if anyone else has seen what I have. No big deal.

As for the Malkin comments, I’m not sure where they are coming from, or what purpose they have here, but I’ll leave those go.

by Link_Gaetz on Oct 30, 2009 8:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t think you’re crazy. I could see how fans of opposing teams would get upset with the way Ovie sometimes approaches a hit.

Maybe play with an edge, be a little more physical -- maybe be more of a prick out there.

by jordanDC on Oct 30, 2009 8:49 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, that’s the thing. “Sometimes approaches a hit.” I’m not here saying Ovechkin is dirty. I know he isn’t dirty. He plays the game hard, which is why he is the best offensive player in the game. It’s just that sometimes, the way he apporaches his hits along the boards, I can see why people would view that as a slew-foot. When he hits people behind the net, sometimes they are falling over backwards for a reason other than a 230-pound freight train smashing you.

by Link_Gaetz on Oct 30, 2009 8:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If you think 8 is a player who slew foots, by definition, that would be a dirty player. And yet you stand on your head to say he’s not a dirty player. Can’t have it both ways—have some guts and stick with your original thinking.

Frankly, I think you’re remembering this and letting your mind wander.

I feel a dirty player is someone who has an intent to injure, which Ovechkin doesn’t.

I said above that I can’t view streaming media, but is it safe to assume that YouTube clip is a Penguins slew-footing a Cap?

by Link_Gaetz on Oct 30, 2009 9:50 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s AO catching up to Sid and checking him from the side, to which Matt Cooke objects.

And I think you can be a dirty player without having an intent to injure. I mean, Danny Briere doesn’t intend to injure with his little elbows, rabbit punches and spears, but they’re still plenty dirty, imo.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Oct 30, 2009 9:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s a good point. I just don’t classify someone who has thrown a slew-foot or two as dirty. I never said he does it regularly. I have just seen a few.

As for the YouTube clip, I’m not sure what I am supposed to say for that. I don’t care if Ovechkin laid a clean hit on Sid. I hate when players attack another player after a clean hit, so it’s not like I am condoning what Matt Cooke did.

Apropos of nothing, I wrote this in yesterday’s Mike Green thread:

Cursing doesn’t bother me much. What scares me about all of this is that I know that a pretty good number of athletes are dumb as a post. I love having Ovi and Laich and Bradley around because they express themselves so well. I’m not looking forward to the day that we have such good access that we learn that some new kid defenseman prospect is just dumb.

Hockey is not a game for the stupid… to play

Going to disagree with this one. Emphatically.

Smarts has zero to do with the ability to play hockey at a high level. It’s about having marvelous natural ability and the ability to focus on maximizing them. Even the worst NHL player has athletic abilities that would blow the rest of the population out of the water.

And having been to Cap Centre and Verizon a number of times over the years, I will say that there are plenty of genuine fans that evidence the IQ of a lima bean.

This argument assumes that there’s only one kind of smart, which isn’t true. There’s depth of thought and speed of thought – if you think slowly, you’re going to continuously find yourself saying “wait, what?” and get frustrated. You’re referring to depth of thought and analysis, and I’ll agree with you that there’s a lot of fans who don’t do that. But slow thinkers are going to struggle with hockey because of the amount of input that needs to be processed in real-time to follow a play.

There’s a difference between intellectual intelligence and athletic intelligence, and the two don’t necessarily go hand in hand. Mike Green might be able to process events on the ice and anticipate things quicker than anyone. That doesn’t mean he’ll be analyzing the prospects of economic recovery in the U.S. on the McLaughlin Group anytime soon.

As a former sportswriter, I think the biggest myth about pro athletes is they’re dumb. Some of them may not be great communicators, but the one thing that really surprised me about covering the NFL way back when was how bleeping smart 85% of the locker room was. These were guys who would have been successful at whatever they did, they just happened to have freakish bodies that helped make them athletes.

Semin and Flash might not backcheck anyone enough to rub them.

by TylerG on Oct 30, 2009 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

My issue is more with their propensity to turn over the puck around the O-zone blueline, but yes, I could see that being a problem as well if Semin wasn’t motivated.

Semin backchecks from time to time, or so at least is my impression from watching him. Not all the time, and not always determinedly when he does, of course.

Is there a whole chapter of Boudreau’s book dedicated to Flash? I haven’t read it yet…

by Kolzilla on Oct 30, 2009 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He just seems to try and force Flash into the top 6. Theoretically, that’s where he’d be successful, but he just drives some of us nuts.

Hopefully as he develops he’ll become harder to knock off the puck, but I’m not holding my breath. In the meantime his deficiencies stand out more when he’s faired with other (better) offensively-minded players.

by Kolzilla on Oct 30, 2009 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not exactly, but read the book and it’s pretty clear that Bruce really, really loves Flash. Really.

by Your Nation's Capital on Oct 30, 2009 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

it’s pretty clear that Bruce really, really loves Flash.

What it pretty much comes down to is, as a fan:
1. How much do you trust Bruce’s ability to evaluate a player’s ability and
2.. Not to be snide, but do you think you know more about a player’s potential than Bruce?
To be clear, when I say “you” I mean the universal “you”. I’m not taking a shot at anybody. Listen, I second guess as much as anybody, but when it comes to understanding hockey and players, Bruce has forgotten more than I’ll ever know. So far, he’s pushed a lot of the right buttons and if he feels this strongly about Flash, I have to believe he sees something in him that justifies that belief. He didn’t really see it in Bourque and I’m not sure he sees it totally in Fehr, but he has said repeatedly that Flash can be great. That’s a strong statement for a player who hasn’t reached 20 goals yet, but Bruce hasn’t backed away from it and until he’s proven wrong, I’ll trust his opinion on this.

My problem with this is that we had this great thing going this year. One wing with high skill, one with grit. 14 with 28 negates that.

by HateOffSeason on Oct 30, 2009 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wish we had Bogo on our team. He’s certainly living up to his high draft position.

I also thought Alex Slewvechkin had a great game. As usual, the refs ignored his slewfooting antics.

Let me ask someone who lives in the D.C. area (I live in Richmond VA) what channel Comcast is on. For me, it’s 251, and I’m wondering if we have the same setup as you. CSN+ for me was channel 19 last year. Didn’t think to check the MASN channels.

Nice Lepisto mention/link. Still can’t believe its Sami in the lineup every night. He’s surprised me by playing better than he ever did in his call ups for the Caps. Even more of a shocker given that he’s paired with Yandle. Both guys have the rep of being offensive guys but they have played solid in their own end. Best I’ve ever seen Yandle play as well.
