Never passed these lips before, but
I’m a little irritated Theo’s not in net.
from the house that Red Jesus built
With there being back to back games I’m fine with it, like it was said earlier i would rather Varly face ATL without Kovy then to face the Islanders that are starting to have some firepower
Looking at the schedule, this is the right game to play the #2 goaltender. Don’t forget that Theo missed a few games just now with back spasms. The rest is a good thing.

Let’s not forget we’re dealing with an absurdly small sample size. Yes, Theodore is playing fantastically, and Varlamov less so — but like BB said it takes some time for a number one to emerge, and we need to make sure we’re giving both guys chances to state their case.
One of the most important goals of this season is figuring out who our horse is for the playoffs — Varly or Theo.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Oct 29, 2009 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions
One could probably argue that for a guy who just missed a few games with back spasms, the safer play is the game where he’s been in town for more than a day rather than the one where he just got in in the wee hours of the morning of the game.
But I trust he knows his body and the trainers and coaches do as well. I’d have started Varly here, too.

I think the Thrash are not that much worse without Kovy. They still have a few offensive threats in Bryan Little, Peverley, Kozlov, etc. It’ll be a good test for Varly.
When Hell freezes over, I'll play hockey there, too.

I don’t think there’s a team in the league that could lose Kovalchuk and not miss him, but I agree with you that unlike some years past, this Thrashers team has some other players they can rely on.
Still, the Caps need to take control of this game and do it early.

by Gould Old Days on Oct 29, 2009 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions
The Thrashers have 28 goals this year; Kovy has 9 of them. That’s a pretty good chunk of the offense missing there.
That being said, I agree – there are other guys who can bring it, and aside from Bruce’s theory of a team “rallying around an injury” there’s always the chance that the Caps underestimate a Kovy-less Atlanta team, as well.
…not that they ever do that.
So far so good.

JT60 was definitely out of the net and stretching his back…a lot…during the teevee timeouts in the third period. The period in which he stopped twenty shots. And it kinda looked like he was thinking “Eight minutes left on the clock. I can do this for eight more minutes.”

Don’t forget your SPG picks… if you’re into that sort of thing.
Pick SPG for your chance to win probably nothing.
What’s the over under for total minutes of concerted effort from the Caps tonite? 19.5?
Not that I particularly care, regular season meaning goal scoring trophy and all, and it not taking a complete effort to beat the Thrash…
I’ll take the under, and 2 points via the Gimmick.
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
If history is our guide...
they’ll play well in the very beginning and the last 15 minutes. So, I’ll take the over on 19.5min (but not by much).

I don’t know, I remember having empty seats that were handy for storing coats and stuff, but (and maybe I’m blacking this out) I don’t remember it being THAT empty.
I was at a Caps-Oilers game a couple years ago (the one with the ridiculously long SO won by Bradley). I remember it looking about that empty.

Huh. I remember that game but I think the only part that’s stuck in my memory is Bradley scoring that SO winner after just about everyone else (including Erskine) had already gone. Still my favorite Brads moment…
Maybe the lower level was more crowded, but the section I was in had like 5 other people in it. I also remember that game fondly. I got a free puck from the Canadian Forces. In fact its right here on my desk.

When Hell freezes over, I'll play hockey there, too.
by Steck It Out on Oct 29, 2009 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Outside the crease has nothing to do with why they call it. They called it because the ref evidently thought Slater was in the clear, meaning he didn’t think Poti or Juice could catch him. I think Poti could have and Laich probably could have if he kept skating.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
Horribly bad call…but I love how Varlamov just squeezed the puck for about an hour after he made the save.
Two straight games we gave up a penalty shot. Two straight games it was against Tom Poti. Two straight games Tom Poti failed to move to the center of the ice when it was called for. Two straight days F&B has the Tom Poti hate on.

by Laich It Or Lump It on Oct 29, 2009 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions
When you look at the replay look at where Poti is skating from. His angle is real extreme because he was so far to the other side of the ice. But when the puck is on the boards by your partner, you need to slide to the middle. He didn’t slide to the middle ever so he wasn’t in the center of the ice when the puck bounced free and he had a longer distance to go to catch Slater.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
Was it not Laich who tripped him up?

It was, but that wasn’t my beef. My beef is that both PS against us Tom Poti was significantly out of position, when if he were in position he would have thwarted the play without anyone needing to take a PIM.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
I gotcha. I took “two straight games it was against Tom Poti” to mean that he caused both penalty shots directly, i.e. he tripped the skater. My bad.

With the assist, Ovie now leads the league in points.
When Hell freezes over, I'll play hockey there, too.
My favorite part of Kopitar taking the points lead was some post on espn.com from a Kings fan asking why all the talk is about Ovechkin/Crosby/Malkin when Kopitar was ahead of Ovie in goals and points having played 2 more games after our long layoff week. 12th game for Ovie now how are those stats looking now? Not even half the game other either.
That #8 sure can’t pass either. All his assists are off rebounds…

I can appreciate a Kings fan feeling that Kopitar has been slighted, because he is way under-rated and overlooked. But he’s not in AO’s class yet.

Regardless of what you think about Sloan playing forward, the Steckel, Bradley, Sloan line was played very well this game and the last, IMO. Can’t say the same for “3rd” line as of late.

Related, but did he and Schultz switch up in pairings? Looking at the TOI, looks like 52-55, 2-3 and 23-26, and I saw Schultz with Green, but thought it was overlap.

Two things of note so far -
1) Semin has no shots on goal yet (although he has one that was blocked and one that missed) and
2) Boudreau’s rolling four lines pretty consistently, with just about everyone hovering between 8 and 12 minutes of TOI.
