Still getting used to the new CapGeek, but I think this puts the team into the bonus cushion.

By my math, you’re right. But they also, I believe, have to either IR one of Gordon/Laing or cut someone to get back down to 23 men, no?

Fehr’s another candidate, but yeah, I think they need to put a forward on IR.

I get:
Ovi, Backstrom, Semin, Laich, Mo, Knuble, Aucoin, Steckel, Bradley, Nylander, Clark, Laing, Gordon, Flash and Fehr is 15 forwards
Green, Schultz, Poti, Pothier, Sloan, Juice, and Mo is 7 defensemen
Theo and Varly is 2 goalies.
Erskine is already on IR (I think)

That’s 24 players other than Erskine. So I guess Gordon, Laing or Fehr need to go on IR. I wouldn’t mind seeing them LTIR Gordon retroactively back to the first game he missed.

Can’t think of a better time to send Laing through waivers. Who is going to pick up a guy with swine flu?

by Stormblue on Oct 28, 2009 7:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Can you waive a guy who’s out injured/sick?

Sometime in the last couple of years, didn’t a team need a special exemption from the salary cap/ waivers rules because they had so many players get sick at once, but they weren’t LTIR eligible?

Didn’t think so, but wanted someone to confirm that.

The roster spot was opened by assigning Giroux to Hershey and that freed up enough cap space too. Gordon and Erskine on IR already by my notes and that had to be or there would not have been roster spots for aucoin and giroux. My math says they have been using a good portion of the bonus cushion from 19’s contract all season.

by sk84fun_dc on Oct 28, 2009 10:10 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

sk8, do you know the terms of Backstrom’s bonus? Is he likely to get it?

I suspect the team hopes (wishes) to move the Nylander contract, so they feel fairly comfortable eating into the bonus for now. If I’m right, I hope that optimism is justified.

oooh, i forgot about Nyls……..maybe he gets moved and that clears the roster spot and no one goes back down….. lots of things would have to fall into place pretty quickly tho……

Hopefully we get the Flash from the beginning of the 08-09 season, but I’m not going to hold my breath.

I doubt it.

Line reshuffling again…

Brooksie or Flash on the 2nd line?

When Hell freezes over, I'll play hockey there, too.

by Steck It Out on Oct 28, 2009 6:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Laich for starters – Flash is going to have to start slow and I bet BB’s going to want to play it cool with his minutes at first.

That does not sound like something BB would do with Flash. I bet Flash starts on the 2nd line, PP2, and more likely than I’d hope he’ll get PK time.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Flash-Aucoin-Clark as the fourth/energy line. That makes Bradley-Steckel-Fehr the third line.

Given Bruce’s love affair with Flash, I’m betting he goes to the second and Laich moves down to center the third between Fehr and Clark

by b.orr4 on Oct 28, 2009 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I was going to say given Gabby’s troo luv affair with Flash, he’ll be starting the game with Backy and Ovie. :)

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

by marky narc on Oct 28, 2009 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I doubt it. Didn’t happen last year. I think it’s more likely he’ll be with Morrison and Knuble. Unless Bruce chooses to put in on the 3rd line with Fehr and Aucoin. Flash and Fehr have been a good combination in the past. (Of course, Fehr’s injured at the moment.)

I voted Laing the other day in the poll, but I have to say I kinda like Sloan at forward.

He’s a serviceable fill-in, but let’s not convert the guy.

Maybe play with an edge, be a little more physical -- maybe be more of a prick out there.

Let's see....

Ok after reading everyone’s posts and some thinking…..here’s what I see…. (insert disclaimer here)

Ov-Backs-Semin
Knubs-Laich-BMo
Aucoin/Laing-Flash-Clark
Bradley-Steckel-Fehr

My bet is Laing too. But I wouldn’t be surprised to see Aucoin go - despite all his good efforts and points he’s been making the past week or two. Same thing happened to him last spring – did well right before the playoffs and got sent back anyway. But I like Laing’s work because I saw another post – he’s doesn’t score, but he doesn’t screw up either. I think Laing’s size might also help him stay vs. Aucoin. Aucoin’s a good guy with great hockey smarts, but did any of you see him bounce off Pronger last night? Now it seems the more I talk, the more I think Aucoin is going…..

I can’t see Flash going higher than 3rd line — don’t want him to slow down Knubs or Bmo while he tries to get acclimated to the NHL speed again…. but we all know how BB feels about Flash. Maybe BB will surprise us…..

It wouldn’t be crazy to put Flash on the second line, but have Ovi’s doubleshift minutes come out of his TOI. That might work out to a reasonable number of minutes for Flash, coming off the health problems.

Why would BMo go on the wing? And Knubs to the LW?

by Your Nation's Capital on Oct 28, 2009 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Flash usually played as left wing last year even though he’s been listed as a center. Usually, the other winger on his line would be Semin or Fehr.

by CapsFan75 on Oct 28, 2009 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think he’s referring to RedskinFan4Life’s lines above (who seems to be a bit confused about positions). Using those lines, it would really look like this:

Ovie-Backs-Semin
Laich-BMo-Knuble
Flash-Aucoin-Clark
Bradley-Steckel-Fehr

Although, personally, I’d switch Clark and Fehr. And once Gordon comes back, I’d probably go:

Flash-Steckel-Fehr
Bradley-Gordon-Clark

as the bottom two lines.
