Not-belonging-in-the-NHL-related.
Rec’d.
But Flash-related, I’d believe.

You’d see him better with an avatar, Mr. F.

In between that and the Powe-boy reference, it does make you want to take an early lunch.

I think it’s pretty obvious by now that Giroux is a AAAA player. Too good for the minors and not good enough for the bigs. Probably a nice guy, but he contributed virtually nothing last night.
It’s interesting to see that despite Aucoin’s twerpiness, he is always involved in the plan. Giroux is like a phantom.

I absolutely loved the smile on the faces Saturday against the NYI when he bounced off of Sutton at the blue line and jumped back up and pushed back. I think Aucoin and Sutton were both laughing. Or was that the ATL game?
But Brawndo's got what plants crave. It's got electrolytes.
Andy Sutton is NYI.
Never lie, steal, cheat, or drink. But, if you must lie, lie in the arms of the one you love. If you must steal, steal away from bad company. If you must cheat, cheat death. If you must drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away.
That was also in the ATL
he and Antropov got into it a little, with Aucoin smiling that little leprechaun smile like, “what, your gonna beat the shit outta me, fool?”
You may be thinking of the ATL game and Antropov?

Course, I should read the whole thing first.

Couldn’t see Sutton, but Aucoin certainly looked like he was having fun. That was definitely a “I’ll do take that 1000 times happily if I can keep playing here moment”. Or perhaps we should just call that a Laing moment.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but does Giroux have to clear waivers or no?
"If you're gonna die after 24, might as well jump out at 23:59, no?"

No – only if he’d been here 10 games or 30 days.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I thought that was only if he had already cleared waivers once this season. Is that not how it works?

That’s not how it works, exactly – there’s an exemption for veterans who haven’t played enough NHL games in the last two years.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I can’t find that exemption you mentioned, but I did find this in the CBA:
A Player 25 years old or older who plays in one (1) or more Professional
Games in any season shall be exempt from Regular Waivers and Re-Entry Waivers for
the remainder of that season.
That explains it, I guess. Thanks J.P.

The only minor league exemption I am aware of relates to re-entry waivers specifically.
Giroux cleared waivers to start the season.
He qualifies as a minor league vet and therefore, did not require re-entry waivers (if he did not meet the minor league vet dfn. he would require re-entry waivers since he makes more than 105,000 when playing in the AHL.)
If the recall was of the non-emergency type, the 10 game/30 days on the roster (cumulative counts and whichever happens first) kicks in. If he was recalled under emergency conditions, then the counter does not start. It is not clear to me with the Nylander situation that the Caps could claim emergency conditions, so I assume it was a non-emergency recall, but who knows.
(see the Yan Stastny re-entry recall by STL the other day as a recent example of a player that does require re-entry waivers.)
Per the team, non-emergency.
Per the team, “there’s an exemption for veterans who haven’t played enough NHL games in the last two years.”
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Well, I was correct in assuming non-emergency. Thanks for the confirmation.
Curious, what was the question that was asked that elicited a response about the exemption?
The exemption they are referring to is specific to re-entry waivers and it is based on number of pro games played as well as number of NHL games on the roster in the previous season and the previous 2 seasons. There has never been an exemption for minor league veterans from regular waivers.
Giroux cleared waivers at the beginning of the season, was exempt from re-entry per the minor league vet rule, and did not have to clear waivers on the way back down because the counter has not hit 10 NHL games or 30 days on an NHL roster. If he is called back up, the count continues from where it left off.
Ahhh. I didn’t know he cleared at the beginning of the season.

Wait a sec. Does the CBA waiver rules apply to non-NHL contract players, because that may explain a lot of my confusion?

by Laich It Or Lump It on Oct 28, 2009 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Not sure what you are asking as Giroux has an NHL contract.
No, the NHL/NHLPA CBA does not apply to players that do not have an NHL contract in terms of waivers, etc. So, for example, Bryan Helmer who is playing in Hershey on an AHL only contract did not have to clear waivers when he was sent to Hershey.
Sorry, I’m all sorts of mixed up. That makes sense.

Since you seem to know a lot on the subject, I found this in the CBA but I’m not sure of the context for when it applies:
A Player 25 years old or older who plays in one (1) or more Professional
Games in any season shall be exempt from Regular Waivers and Re-Entry Waivers for
the remainder of that season.
It’s in section 13.4 of the CBA. Does that apply only to the first year of that player’s contract?

I don’t have time to read it right now, but from memory and with what is shown above, that is referring to a player playing their first pro season while under an NHL contract.
fwiw, here’s a post of mine from the Laing signing thread with a lot more details about re-entry waivers….I don’t know how to link to a post in another thread…
“Re-entry waivers for 09-10: for players making more than $105,000 in the minors whether due to a higher AHL salary on a two-way deal or on a one-way contract where paid NHL salary in the AHL. There is an exemption for minor league vets and based on my math, I believe Aucoin and Laing will both qualify for the exemption.
The threshold is 80 games on the NHL roster (not games played, but games on the roster) the last 2 seasons combined or 40 games on the roster in the previous season.
The rule specifies that games out due to injury count for this rule so one has to use the transaction wire to identify games on the NHL roster. Based on a quick read, it does not specify regular season games vs regular season and playoff games.
…Laing… So he will have to clear waivers on the way down, but regardless of a one way deal or a two way deal with a nice AHL salary of more than $105,000, he will not have to clear re-entry on the way up if he is recalled.
For Aucoin: I checked the numbers earlier this season for Aucoin and I don’t think anything changed. He will be on a one way NHL contract for 09-10, but meets the minor league vet exemption so no re-entry waivers…"

I think the comment has to have a title and then you can link to that comment via that title. I think. Almost nobody on this blog uses the title box though.

Thanks, I thought it was the time/date but when I tried that it didn’t work, or at least I thought it didn’t. This time it did work :) Appreciate the info.

IIRC that refers to a player signing his first NHL contract at the age of 25 would be exempt for that first year only. So if you were stuck under KHL control until you were 25 and then came to the NHL, your NHL team could only shuttle you back and forth for only that first year as opposed to a 20 year old who can see his team do that to him for three years.
right, that’s the way I was trying to explain it, too; considered 25yo for waiver purposes at time of signing first NHL contract, waiver-exempt for first pro season playing under that contract…
Ok, that’s was what I was figuring. Thanks for all your help, everyone who posted in this chain of comments. This stuff confuses the hell out of me, but I still like trying to figure it out.

Glad it wasn’t Sloan – I think he plays well O or D.
But Brawndo's got what plants crave. It's got electrolytes.
Agree. He had some hustle last night, and while he wasn’t perfect, he sure didn’t look out of place.

Eh, I’d rather see Giroux up here, he does have a goal to Sloan’s nice shot.
That said, I don’t think either of them really belong in the NHL.
"I think the relentless negative coverage in The Washington Post is a real difference from previous years," Redskins general counsel David Donovan said. "But in terms of the way our actual fans are behaving, we don't see any difference."
Also agree
Sloan gives me no worries—I haven’t seen him really screw the pooch yet. Now, the guy he reminds of….
