How did I miss the holidays? Feels like March after last night.

Did anyone catch.....
….Semin on the bench after he scored his goal saying “I don’t know, it hit his shin pad.”
When Versus showed him and OV on the bench, you could tell he definitely said that. I just wanted to see if anyone else saw it or thought he said something else.

Lips weren’t obviously readable to me, but his general demeanor definitely suggested that he was a little surprised with the shot. He needs to shoot as often as he did in that game every game.

I didn’t see it (was at the game), but are you sure? They don’t speak much English to one another.
That said, I thought it caught something (I had thought stick) soon after release.

Speculation from the commentary guys was that it grazed a shin pad. The shot was a bit of a wobbler in slo-mo, so it’s likely.

Tough shot for Emery to stop but the first two weren’t. If Theo was playing goal for the Flyers, Philadelphia would have won. After watching Emery for several games, I’ll go out on a limb and say the Flyers will not win a Cup with him in goal.

Ovie’s first goal definitely was headed low, hit Timo’s stick and fluttered over Emery’s shoulder. Not sure I can blame him too much for that. Nick’s though…

The Flyers have been looking for a solid goalkeeper for the last 20+ years. My guess is they’re still looking. Aside from the goals last night, Emery was allowing some hellacious rebounds.

They should dig up Robert Esche, Roman Chechmanec, and Jeff Hackett.. and just pile them all up in front of the goal.

Agree with you on the rebounds.
After watching the replays of the goals in the second, I have to give him a pass on the AO goal. That guy, in tight, on a probably tipped shot is a tall order for any goalie.
19’s goal should have been stopped.
The Semin goal was a deflection, but still gets stopped by a good goalie on his game.

I disagree that Semin’s goal is at all the fault of Emery. It was a rocket shot through a screen, off a shin pad and right under the crossbar. That shot goes in far more often than not on any goalie.

Putting shots on net seems to be the first step to beating any goaltender. Funny how that works, there.
Interesting that Ray Emery was lights-out until he ran smack-dab into the Caps. Admittedly small sample size, but before the first Caps game, he was .962 and 1.0 GAA; after, he ran .886 and 3.16 GAA. Brian Boucher’s only played once in goal, though why they put their backup goalie in against the Sharks in his first start of the season is a mystery to me.

Eakin is making a case for himself.
Gustafsson is eligible.
Patrick Wey attended the USA Hockey August dev. camp in Lake Placid. IMO, a longshot to make the team, but on the radar.
Players with a birthyear of ’90 or later are eligible.
by sk84fun_dc on Oct 28, 2009 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions 2 recs
Eakin is, but how oft does an overage guy make his debut for Canada in teh WJC? I know this year is a little different because nine eligible Canadians are in the NHL, but…
BabyGus is eligible. So is my 19-year old American cousin, who plays roller hockey. Both seem equally likely to be on their respective WJC teams.
by TylerG on Oct 28, 2009 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Eakin is not an overager; he’s a ‘91; he was drafted in the NHL draft the first year he was eligible. He played well in a tourney representing Canada, I think it was the U18 tourney, and was an injury replacement at the Hockey Canada WJC summer camp so he is being considered. His play to date this season is only going to help him during Hockey Canada’s decision-making.
And fwiw, an overager would not be eligible. Overagers in the CHL this season are ’89s (for example, Broda) and ’89s are not eligible.

I thanked you for the correction/help. Not enough?
by TylerG on Oct 28, 2009 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I am not trying to make a big deal about it, just I was confused as to the direction your post was leading given your follow-up post acknowledging the lack of info.
Again to clarify one point, a lot of NHL followers get confused about WJC U20 eligibility because it is not the same as draft eligibility. WJC20 eligibility is based on birthyear, so anyone born earlier than 1990 is not eligible this year. Players like Colin Wilson and Van Reimsdyk who played last year are not eligible for Team USA this year.

To continue my comments, I was only listing players that are on the radar for their respective teams. If I wanted to list all the Caps prospects that are eligible the list would have been longer. Have to agree here. A poke at the goalie merits a little love tap or a glove to the face, but the WWE act is out of bounds.
From the roughly half a game I saw, the Flyers continued their penchant for running goalies, cheap shots and bitching to the ref.
I also thought they played well enough to win, but didn’t get some breaks.

I missed almost the entire second and the first half of the third, but from what I saw Theo was really good. And, as you say, lucky. Fartsmell shanked one with an open net and the Flyboys shot wide on a couple really good chances. But he made some awfully solid saves by being in good position and calm, and he made some great glove saves by virtue of being fast.

Is there anything at all that can be done about the ice? I mean, is there a way to de-humidify the building or something? The team has to know it’s an issue, the front office is not blind. I’m just wondering if it’s possible to do anything about it other than try and downplay the issue from a PR standpoint.

The puck did look pretty bouncy in a lot of cases, I’ll agree with that. Three posts, though, is a week’s worth of luck in one game. I’m not trying to diminish the win or the play of Theo, both of which were real nice. Just saying this was a game that could have gone either way, and the Caps caught some breaks. With two good teams, that’s often the way of it, I’ll add.

whoa, there, Bobby Orr Four. Tom Poti was a primary reason that urned into a breakaway—he inexplicably hugged the left boards when his responsibility was center ice when Green pinched. And, while he did a great job getting back and trying to make a play, he hit Powe’s right skate first—not hard, but he got it. I think the refs got this one right.
And I’ll say it again—the D pairing of Poti and Green, unless its PP, is not a good one. At all.

Here is what Tim Panaccio, the Flyers beat reporter wrote:
Barely two minutes after Semin’s goal, Caps’ goalie Jose Theodore faced a penalty shot and made a pad save on Darroll Powe, who had been hauled down by Tom Poti on a breakaway. The officials got it wrong. Poti made a legal stick check in knocking the puck away even though Powe tripped. So long as Poti knocked the puck away – which he did – the poke check was legal.
Regardless, the Flyers got a lucky break.
by b.orr4 on Oct 28, 2009 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
saw dat. First of all, it was no poke check—it was a desperation sweep that arced (Arked?) into Powe’s skate. The replay was pretty clear. A bang-bang play, but I feel he got skate first (and the rest of the PS call was appropriate)…it was a break (as Shaggy alludes to below). Philly was clicking on the PP.

I don’t want to defend the bad call, but I’d suggest that it’s virtually impossible for an referee to get into the right position to be able to make that call. (On any similar play.)

On another play in the 1st, I think it was Poti that inexplicably left one of the Flyers alone in the slot. I mean he just skated away from him like he smelled bad. I think it was JVR, who got a real solid chance from the high slot. That was baffling.

On an early 1st period 28 foray into the slot with the puck, Timmonen just waltzed through and ignored him to cover 8 and Semin had a real nice look (in which I thought he could have moved in another 10 feet, literally, before shooting) ; ditto Ovechkin on his first goal—just untouched and on cruise control.

If a defensive back is horribly out of position but somehow is able to recover and gets nicked with a questionable pass interference call, is it a stupendous defensive effort? I’m not sure you can hand out accolades like that when the situation was of his own creation (though I’d agree that he recovered well).

The most interesting thing to me was the way that play confirmed what I’ve been thinking for a long time: Penalty shots are far preferable for the defensive team than breakaways. In other words, players should sweep out those skates on purpose because a goal is much more likely on the breakaway than the penalty shot.
The breakaway player has three huge advantages. First, he likely has some degree of surprise on his side. Second, he has teammates who can occupy some of the goalie’s attention. And third – HE CAN PUT IN HIS OWN REBOUND. If the penalty shot itself had happened as live play, it’s a goal. Powe potted his rebound, but it was already too late on the penalty shot.
In sum, defensemen, if you find yourself out of position, take out those skates!

I’ve long thought that the fouled team should have a choice between a 2 min PP or the PS. Or, give the PS and the power play, but if the shot is made, count it as if the goal was scored on the PP, so the minor is washed out.

I think the NHL needs to scrap this whole five on five thing and just go right to the penalty shot format. The elegant simplicity — shooter, defender of the shot, no french pastry mucking things up. Make for leaner payrolls, too, without the need to carry six defensemen (well, the Caps might still want to hold on to Greenie).

Shootout’s a good point too — every goalie in the league is much better against penalty shots than they were in decades past because they get so much more practice. Another reason you’re better off swiping the guy’s legs and getting the penalty shot than allowing the breakaway to continue.

My addendum to that would be Coach get the option PS or 2-min PP. If they choose the PP… it goes as normal. If they choose the PS and succeed… it washes the man advantage. If they choose the PS and miss… they receive a 1-min PP.
As was mentioned before… I think the PS vs. an in-game breakaway is so different for the goaltender and shooter that they don’t really compare as repercussion for the foul.

Poti got all puck and the Powe tripped over his stick. Perfectly legal.
Me thinks otherwise. Maybe you could make a case for a PP instead of a a PS, but I was happy with the scrub taking the PS rather than killing 2 minutes.
And I’d estimate that at least half the time Poti makes these great plays it’s because he put himself out of position or did something dumb to begin with.

Full disclosure: I saw only the first period and the last 10 minutes of the third. In that time, I thought Poti was pretty good in general. He jumped into a rush and fed Semin for a good chance, and did a nice job breaking up some passes. On the PK, though, he’s weak at getting the puck out of the zone.

Alex Semin gave the Caps the lead early in the third, on a high shot from the top of the circles that deflected, but far enough up ice that Emery should have had time to adjust. Alex Ovechkin sealed the Washington win in the last minute with an empty netter, after Backstrom and Semin both passed up clear looks at the net to get the reigning MVP the puck. I don’t know if it’s a team effort to pad Ovechkin’s stats, but it was bizarre seeing the two open forwards work to get the puck to the only covered player as the net sat open.
from Broadstreet hockey. Apparently they aren’t familiar with the concept of getting across center ice before firing a shot at an empty net to prevent an icing call if you miss.

I thought the Richards-Ovechkin collision created an incredibly inciteful image of the two players. It came from the replay versus showed, but is not online. The regular view doesn’t do it justice:
Richards sees the collision coming, positions himself to stay in the play by bouncing off the boards, and heads off after the puck immediately. Ovechkin leaves his feet and drops his stick, taking him out of the play. Ovechkin makes it look good, but Richards makes the smart hockey play.
Richards tries to line up Ovechkin and gets blasted. Ovechkin didn’t come close to leaving his feet (i even offered video as proof) and Ovechkin was out of the play because Hartnell tackled him from behind. What is this guy smoking?

I just feel like backstrom can get it deep into the zone through traffic pretty regularly without dumping it..so much wasted time dumping and then philly getting an easy chip out of the zone. Caps have all that skill on the PK..use it, damnit!

Can’t carry it in when the Flyers stack the line. Gotta dump it and be willing to go get it, that second part being the critical element of course.

gotta dump and have the other guys out there entering the zone with speed, if you wait until the last second, your teammates have no momentum huggling the blue line and don’t get to the puck first making it easy for the opponent to clear.

I also don’t like it when they choose to dump it.
Their first power play, which netted zero shots by the way, they did try to skate it in. Philly was stacking up 3 guys at the blue line and trapping the puck at the boards and the line.
When they do that, your only alternative is to dump it in. As noted elsewhere, then you have to win the puck back, though.
In general, I don’t mind the Caps playing D&C on the PP. They do best when they play simple hockey.

Yea. again, I think i was thinking more of 5v3 time..but I agree with you, with those big philly bruisers stacking the blue line dumping is a need – I just feel like the caps aren’t good at it – they don’t recover the puck most times they do dump it. No, I have no support for my claim other than i FEEL like it’s true from what i remember about last night.

good call.
Link to article
Della Rovere’s first cheap shot came after Canadian star John Tavares had notched his second goal in just over forty seconds, to pull the Canadian team to within one at 3-2. As the Canadian team made their way past the American bench (during which Della Rovere was mockingly extending his fist as if to engage the American players in a celebration) to celebrate with their teammates one or two of the Canadians ran into American winger James van Riemsdyk, who had his back to the jubilant Canadians. The result wasn’t all that surprising: the Canadians bunched into one another and several lost their footing, including one who appeared a take a stick up high (update: reader 246 points out that the Canadian player was clipped by an American seated on the bench, something I had missed in the telecast and in the intial recaps). Della Rovere in turn quickly and subtly punched van Riemsdyk from the blind side before continuing to the Canadian bench as if nothing had happened. The result? An ice pack to the face of van Riemsdyk , who lay prone on the ice for several minutes before getting up, and no penalty minutes for what should have been a game misconduct.

Unless the Skins gave this jersey to AO, in which case it’s kind of moot (invoking the rule that I just made up that if a player wears it, it can’t be a jersey foul).
