Craig, I love ya. You’re better then what’s passed for hockey writing at The Sporting News, but how does a team that wins four straight games drop two spots in the ranking (past a team that they beat handily in that streak), and a team that loses both its top defenseman and a game keep the top spot?…
…or should we just bag the rest of the regular season and annoint the Penguins as the best team ever to lace up skates?

Nylander has been moved to the KHL. Amen!

I’m going to go out on a limb and say the exciting news is something that is in the control of JP, DMG, Pepper and Tuvan.
If moving Nylander to the KHL was in their control, well, they’d all be bastards for not doing it already.

Perhaps if we’d moved Nylander, we’d have been able to keep Fedorov (although I do think he might have been able to handle one more year, but not two). FYI, Fedorov fans, the Legend is featured in the international report in the Hockey News (THN) for Oct. 26. Some interesting comments, both on salary cap here and the problem it poses for veterans, and, oddly, criticism in Russia for getting a high salary there. Hope he’s happy, anyway.
I’m still not convinced that we’d’ve been wise to keep Fedorov, especially given what BMo has been doing so far this year. Don’t get me wrong – I love Fedorov and he was great for us, but he is slowing down – evidenced by the penalties – and I think that the team has benefited by him moving on in the form of BMo.

Pretty similar to what I was just formulating, so thanks for saving me from having to write it out. Fedorov could have still been of some value, but even with the cap space, I don’t see that the team would have been willing to pay him what he was getting last year, and they shouldn’t.
Ima wondering if the PP has been suffering without Feds’ input? The Pens’ PP looked pretty sloppy without Gonch.
IS PAЯTY NOW
Not convinced of that, though it certainly suffers without Semin’s. Remember, though, that this happened last October, too, so who knows?

Right – the Young Guns make the PP go… or stall. I’m not worried about it. Yet.

Except in three regards:
1) Experience
2) Speaks Russian
3) Can fill in as a D
by red army line on Oct 27, 2009 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions
The Caps should have enough experience from the last two playoff runs at this point. BMo and Knuble have both played several years of playoff hockey.
Russian language skills is irrelevant; unless of course you like to view the Caps locker room as some sort of balkanized organization.
We have 8 D. At most we lose the ability of Feds to drop back to D in game, but he didn’t start many games at D and in those cases we have plenty of guys that can fill in.

Thanks for bringing up his name. Like an old girlfriend, I had just about got over his leaving now I can’t help think how good he would look taking those crucial faceoffs and centering the third line. Sigh…
I had just about got over his leaving (Fedorov)
Sorry, I know the loss is still painful. But he’ll look good on the top line in Vancouver, won’t he? We’ll still get to see him skate at least one more time. What is sad is that he walked away from the 500 club (and his 1200th point). Others have doubted whether he could have accomplished it (17 goals, 21 points short), but he just shrugs it off in the THN article. He says, “Life doesn’t stop here.” He may have regrets, who knows, but he’s going on and we must do the same. He’ll always be my favorite player, though.
by FlyingCloud on Oct 27, 2009 11:05 AM EDT up reply actions
just remember, we were damn blessed by the hockey gods to watch him play. be sad, but remember how lucky you were.
Sooooooooooo looking forward to Vancouver.
I do wonder if the Caps would jump at the chance to bring him back as a coach at some point down the road. Everyone parted on good terms and he spoke fondly of the organization.
But he’ll look good on the top line in Vancouver, won’t he?
It will be a travesty if he’s on either of the top 2 lines in Vancouver. The IIHF should investigate Russia throwing the tournament if Fedorov gets a top 2C spot over Datsyuk and Malkin. We all know Fedorov is first ballot HoF but he’s not even close to a top line player on Russia, of all teams. Russia’s lack of depth probably gets him on the roster, but let’s not delude ourselves into thinking he should be the guy dishing the puck to AO or Kovalchuk. Russia is the best shot to beat Canada, and if they fuck it up by giving Feds the 1C I’ll never forgive them.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...

That dreamy thinking is strictly related to the 2008 World Championships. One problem with that — both Detroit and Pittsburgh didn’t have any players there; you see, they were a little busy at the time. And February 2010 is nearly two years later. It’s a nice memory, but your point is the correct one.
Sort of agreed, but I don’t think it’s as clear cut as that. Malkin and AO haven’t shown chemistry, nor AO and Datsyuk. Fedorov-AO-Semin has. It’s about maximizing output, and I’m not convinced the lineup with Fedorov as 3/4C will be that much better than the one with Fedorov as 1C.
by red army line on Oct 27, 2009 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions
You’re just flat wrong. Malkin and Datsyuk have barely played any games together so saying “they haven’t demonstrated chemistry” is real misleading. Name any players that don’t play well with AO? Or Datsyuk? Or Malkin? You put the most talent together as you can on your top lines and it’ll work out fine.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
Ovechkin has given his enthusiastic, unequivocal approval of and support for Coach Bykov, who coached him in the 2008 Worlds and will be coaching Team Russia in Vancouver.
As sentimental as the Russians get, surely the coach will put emotions behind and structure the team to its most lethal.
Here’s some links I dug up while they were at camp
IS PAЯTY NOW
I’m not sure how AO’s support for Bykov relates to this discussion. Are you suggesting that Russia should or will play Feds on one of the top 2 lines?

As much as I love Datsyuk, I think the world deserves Ovechkin-Malkin-Semin
Kovalchuk isn’t too bad a consolation prize for Datsyuk anyway.

I'm actually agreeing with what you have to say, but...
I think your tone is severely misleading.
I never said AO-Malkin wouldn’t be my first choice as coach of Team Russia. If worst comes to worst they can slide Fedorov in as 1C and put Malkin at 3C to even out the attack. It’s not as if that’s such a horrible option, and IMO it’s a pretty viable one. Sweden will be able to shut down at least one line, Canada might be able to get two. No team can stop three, not if Malkin is playing inspired hockey. And they can also slide Semin in as 3LW in that case, to keep opponents always on their heels.
You make it sound like Malkin-AO-Semin >>>>>> AO-Semin-Fedorov. I don’t think the difference is as great once you take into account how Malkin vastly improves the third line while the first line doesn’t take that much of a dip in effectiveness. We know Russia lacks depth at forward (though not elite depth) and lacks depth on D as well. They’ll win either by loading up and having the top-6 overwhelm the opponents or, if that doesn’t work, balance it out with 3 scoring lines. Looking at Sweden, I’m pretty certain they’ll shut down AO using Lidstrom and Zetterberg. After that the game is in Sweden’s favor, because Russia is left with one scoring line plus spare parts while Sweden has another good three forward lines.
Basically, Fedorov, because of his chemistry with AO and Semin, can do a decent job at 1C, and Malkin should be able to do a great job at 3C (relatively speaking). Meanwhile Russia’s 3rd line with Fedorov at 3C is probably ineffective. Malkin-AO-other > Fedorov-AO-Semin, but the latter is still a good Plan B.
by red army line on Oct 29, 2009 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions
You put the most talent together as you can on your top lines and it’ll work out fine.
Nope. Vehemently disagreed. In Russia’s case it might, but not for Canada, or Sweden, or USA, or Finland for example. The Caps don’t put out the Care Bears all the time as the top line, the Pens don’t go Staal-Malkin-Crosby all the time, the Wings don’t always go Franzen-Datsyuk-Zetterberg. Of course, those teams don’t have the same sort of depth as an Olympic squad, but Russia after the top-6 is lacking, so I think the comparison is good enough here.

I gotta say, the analysis in that second link from Kukla’s is a little ridiculous. I’ve definitely seen other arenas replay questionable calls that provoked big crowd reaction, and to make it seem like its the replay director’s responsibility not to “embarrass the officials” is just a bizarre stance.
I’m not saying the Flyers don’t try harder than other organizations to rile their fans up. They definitely do. The organist plays the opening bars of “Hey Ref You Suck” during stoppages after most bad calls, which is a lot more damning than showing replays of questionable calls.

Interesting to note that the League actually has a rule in place that prohibits teams from showing any replay more than three times. Show it a fourth time and you (supposedly) get fined.

I don’t think the Caps do this much. I’ve noted as much before at times where I expect there to be a replay of a non-call or crappy call. I’m not a fan of the ref-whiners. You know you’re near a hockey dummy when you hear ref/linesman insults after every offside whistle.
Maybe play with an edge, be a little more physical -- maybe be more of a prick out there.
I used to sit directly behind the scoreboard operators, and could usually hear their conversations about what they were going to show. Usually, if there was an injury involved or if the replay of a questionable play showed that the call should probably be AGAINST the Caps, then they’d usually opt not to show it.
by PaintDrinkingPete on Oct 27, 2009 9:43 AM EDT up reply actions
I don’t know — I get when they don’t show an injury, and I think that’s classy. As for not showing a call that should probably go against the Caps, I don’t mind so much. If a call’s legit, then show me that; if it’s not, show me that too. I’d like to make the judgment for myself, at least for discussion later regardless of outcome.

If we’re talking about replays of when a Cap gets the call against them, there have been a few replays over the season and in the past that helped me go “Ok, I see that penalty actually happened. Good call.”

Watched the game with my dad last night It was the first time I’ve ever heard him cheer for a team besides the Redskins. His theory is that if the Redskins look bad enough for the rest of the year Vinny goes. IMO the Redskins and the NFL are pretty much dead. I don’t know if it’s a higher percentage of dumb people, but the sheer numbers are there. Since we are speculating. . .
If Nylander does go to the KHL (or anywhere for that matter), how will it effect our salary cap position? I have read various things about us still taking the ridiculous 4.875 million hit against the cap and then I have read the opposite. Can anyone clear that up for me. . . .
If Nylander is loaned to another team, e.g. somewhere in the KHL, the Caps still pay his salary, but it no longer counts against the roster or the cap. This would mean a big break for the Caps cap-wise, but that doesn’t mean an immediate need to fill it. shwedy’s got a good discussion of it going here.

A healthy Boyd Gordon is definitely missed.
And that’s the problem. Boyd has tons of courage, but his body has a hard time standing up to the rigors of an NHL season. Counting this year, Boyd will have missed at least ten games due to injury in each of the last four seasons. And he’s missing more games with each passing season. Boyd’s only 26 but he’s got what’s turning out to be a chronic back problem and for a guy who makes his living bending over for faceoffs and banging in the corners, that’s not a good injury to have. I admire guys like Boyd and you’re probably right that his injuries have contributed to his sub-par play, but lately, Boyd seems to get injured more often than not. I hope he gets well because he can be a solid contributor to this team and players like Boyd deserve to be rewarded. But when I hear about a guy who’s 26 having back problems, I can’t get too hopeful.
It may be endemic to the role. I know a lot of 4th line grinders who seem to have chronic issues just because of what they’re asked to do day to day. I think depth is the answer — you need a couple spare grinders for when they inevitably go down. Laing, Beagle…

I agree. I’ll be wearing my Gordo jersey as I don’t really feel like wearing a Knuble jersey around surely beligerent Flyers fans.

The Flyer fans still are fond of Knuble. They know his leaving was a salary cap issue.
That or the Lady Gaga thing….
Let's go Caps!

Should I change it up then?
Note- Knuble is a white jersey, Gordo is a red.

Hey, wear what you want… either is acceptable
Me, I have my red Fedorov jersey for tonight (and most nights).

they know Knuble leaving was a direct result of the Pronger trade, which will have repercussions on the team for years to come. (insert laughing here)
Speaking of Pronger
Does Philly employ a team of midgets for their medical staff or is Pronger actually eleven feet tall?

Plus, he’s on skates and everyone else is not.
by PaintDrinkingPete on Oct 27, 2009 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions
He only has size 10 feet. Incongruous, but works pretty well for hockey.
Maybe play with an edge, be a little more physical -- maybe be more of a prick out there.
Well. After further review, he does have fairly petite feet. Which makes him that much more agile, able to take smaller turns, maneuver more easily through traffic, and helps explain why he’s so damn dangerous.
IS PAЯTY NOW
In Ireland, it is generally supposed that a man with petite feet is most likely undersized in another important area of anatomy.

You know what they say about guys with small feet.
Tiny shoes.

Is that what they call them these days?

Size ten hockey skates or real shoes? I’m a size 10-10.5 in shoes and size 7.5 in skates.

No doubt here. Even I can do the research needed to see this clearly (actually, no research needed…Caps are getting bitch-slapped on the dot!!).

If we beat the sharks by three, and Philly lost to the sharks by three can we assume the caps will win by six, because that would be awesome.

If anyone knows of where to find one (1) ticket for tonight’s game I have an idiot friend that is looking.
Have you checked w/ ticketmaster? Caps were still advertizing single game tickets on the Isles broadcast.
IS PAЯTY NOW
Or maybe TicketExchange on the Caps site?
I’ve only sold tickets on there in the past, I don’t know how one purchases tickets the STHs put up on there.
by MisterBungle on Oct 27, 2009 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions
It’s actually pretty easy, just have to have a printer to print the tickets.
"And next year it will be ours."
But is it a separate thing from Ticketmaster itself? They don’t get dumped back into the pool or anything, right?
by MisterBungle on Oct 27, 2009 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions
No, it’s run by ticketmaster, and I’ve had nothing but good experiences.
"And next year it will be ours."
Well that’s good news in case I have friends looking for tickets.
by MisterBungle on Oct 27, 2009 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions
If tickets are unsold, they go back to the original STH, they ARE NOT released to a pool.
STHs can also pull back their tickets as long as they haven’t been sold yet.

No, all Caps games are sold out. Your boy is out of luck.

Corey and Tarik are saying we might need another forward call-up because Quintin Laing might or might not play.
Who should it be, in the event they’d be replacing Q?
I say Kyle Wilson.
Maybe play with an edge, be a little more physical -- maybe be more of a prick out there.
Pinizzotto maybe? I like him when I see him in Hershey…
Kyle Wilson is good too.

Beagle’s been playing well. So has A. Gordon.
Wilson had a really bad game followed by a really good game.

Sloan to play forward according to Corey’s tweet. Lainger threw his body in front of the flu virus.
Maybe play with an edge, be a little more physical -- maybe be more of a prick out there.
I saw the original post about who wasn’t practicing. Can the team even afford another callup against the salary cap? I think Flash on the LTIR is the only reason we can keep both Aucoin and Giroux.
How many times have we busted the myth that 52 fails at playing D?

Bruce had not so nice things to say about Mike Richards today. From TEB
Asked again about Ovechkin’s slew foot and whether the two-time MVP has to be more careful about how he plays, Boudreau said: “He’s had 847 hits in his career and that was the second fine for something like that. I think it’s few and far between for Alex. If they’re going to be looking at guys, there’s an awful lot more guys in the league that have done things that they should be looking at a little bit closer. One being a guy we’re playing against tonight.”
Dude. Bruce cribbin’ from The Rink.

Vogs noted it (with attribution) later that day, I believe, so in all likelihood that’s the source.

Are you sure he was talking about Richards? Seems he could have easily been talking about 3 or 4 other Flyers.

Very true. TEB said it was Richards. I’m not sure if that was just speculation on his part, or additional things were said that could narrow that down.
What about every single Flyer interfering with the goaltender?
