4.875 Million is a lot of Money!

So with the " Nylander Saga" possibly coming to an end the Caps may be looking at some very nice salary cap space. This obviously puts them in a great position especially given the cap situation of some of the other strong teams in the East ( Philly/Boston).

So I began to wonder what the Caps would do with this money and wanted your thoughts as well.

It's very possible that GMGM would sit on this money until the deadline. Looking at this team I can't see much ( on paper) that we would need. Every teams wants/needs that tough-experienced-rugged Dman of course and that's where I think the money goes but not until the deadline.

The Caps could bring up Alzner but given the log jam on the blueline and the (pretty) strong play of Mo and Juice- I'm not so sure. Even if they sent Sloan down, they wouldnt bring up Alzner to be the 7th/8th d-man. And as stated before, besides Erskine who do you move?

So what do you think? Are we making a move the day we get that "cash" ?....or do we wait until the deadline? When we do make the move, what are we getting?

I’d have to agree. I think this is to give space for trades out there. I’d think that until Caps have space, some GM’s might even hesitate to contact GMGM.

I have to think Karlzner would be up for post-trade deadline games and the playoffs.

I think the bigger issue is for next year though and signing Semin and Backis (cant find the buyout thread for Nyles to link)

To give a sense of perspective, that’s more money than there is meat in this burger:

And Nylander could afford more than 250,000 of those burgers with $4,875,000

Trade a D and pick for a 20-25 goal-scoring winger. Sign Manny Fernandez for $750,000. Bring up Alzner or Carlson if either is ready.

Maybe play with an edge, be a little more physical -- maybe be more of a prick out there.

Sign Manny Fernandez for $750,000.

I’m not convinced another keeper is needed. Who do you get rid of?

Theo has been playing remarkably well. Varly hasn’t been putting up the numbers I had hoped, he’s still getting good on the job training. If the trend continues I’d be on the trolley for sending Varly down for a confidence builder and bringing up our other young keeper to see what he’s got.

by Yoshietree on Oct 24, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Definitely a good idea. I was thinking of Manny more as the Huet.. in case 2 of our 3 NHL-level guys are sucking or hurt.

A little early for that I think and come the deadline, if they’re going to grab a keeper, I’d rather see an established keeper from a team out of contention in lieu of someone like Manny.

by Yoshietree on Oct 25, 2009 12:21 AM EDT up reply actions

There hasn’t been much buzz since the rumors first started, but if Peter Forsberg is still playing as well as was reported, you’ve got to think that the Caps would be inquiring.

If contract wasn’t an issue, I’d rather have Nyls over Foppa, at this point. At leasts Nylander’s ankles aren’t falling apart. Contract considered I’d rather have neither.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

by Whiter Mage on Oct 24, 2009 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d like to hear some “rumors” on what Forsberg would be asking for before making that decision. There is probably some BMo-like dollar figure where the risk of signing Foppa is minimal (1 yr/$2mil, prorated?). You’d like to think that the Caps have the leverage (Cup-ready team, potent offensive), but I don’t know enough about his negotiation history to know if he is a hard-liner or not.

by Cluster on Oct 24, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

WM is saying that if Nyls and Foppa were on equal Ks he would take Nyls. I can’t disagree enough. So the prospective Foppa K value is irrelevant to WM’s argument. I don’t see how there is any risk to signing Foppa but apparently WM does. If we sign him and he doesn’t play, we don’t lose cap space. If we sign him and he plays he’s an immediate upgrade at whatever position he plays (except maybe 1C but that’s not exactly an accurate argument because even if he’s a step back from Baxter at 1C that means we have an upgrade at 2C and at 3C so I still view it as an upgrade).

Laich-Morrison-Fehr would be a pretty sweet third line.

Right. For all 5 games Foppa is healthy. What an unfortunate loss for the entire game.

As long as the first 4 give them a sweep in Round 1, it doesn’t matter to me. Foppa won’t be signed simply for skill, he’ll also be signed because he knows how to win.

Man, that has quite the ripple effect. Being able to have Foppa and Backs on the PP gives you the opportunity to create a much more legit pair of units and makes rolling both of them a more appealing option, yes?

About Foppa:

According to Sportbladet.se, KHL’s Ak Bars and Salavat Yulaef offered $3.5 million to Peter Forsberg to play in Russia.

He hasn’t decided yet.

"It's an incredible place. Every seat feels like it's right on top of you. So can't we just make it official? Every big American soccer game should be played in RFK. We need the home-field advantage. Done and done."

by Bald Pollack on Oct 24, 2009 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I am in no way surprised that he’s been tendered an offer.

That said, seeing him in a Caps Jersey would be sah-weet. Like F&B says, for all five games that he was healthy.

by Knee high to a duck on Oct 24, 2009 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

If Foppa thinks he can play, he’ll come to the NHL. I don’t see why he’d go play in the KHL. (After all health is his big issue and we all know how the KHL does with the saftey/health issues!) Foppa probably doesn’t need money like he’s Theo Fleury so if he plays in Europe I bet it’s in Sweden.

The deadline for his decision is November 9 that’s the day before SEL starts again after the Karjala Cup Tournament and the date Modo have set for him. There’s some development after that article and that is the fact that he didn’t make Bengt-Åkes NT squad. So the KHL teams can’t see him play before they sign him I would imagine that can be Deal breaker.
I don’t think it matters though if he plays it’s going to be for Modo in SEL or a legitimate Cup contender in Nhl.

Guy’s got a stamp. The Hall is a lock. I’d love to have him.

And if we have the cap space and don’t use it on a badass defender who we can lock in for a few years, well, caveat emptor GMGM.

Look at the recent high profile “bad ass defensemen” signings. If we do get a BAMF D then caveat emptor, GMGM.

We have Green, Carlson, Alzner, Schultz lined up to be the backbone of our D. Signing another FA long term will push those guys out and use valuable cap space. We also have Semin and Baxter to consider. I’d prefer a rental to a long term guy, personally.

I’d say sit on the money for now. Wait and try to keep moving one of the D. When a D or two gets moved bring up Alzner. Then reevaluate at the deadline. Until the deadline we are banking cap space so we may as well bank as much as we can to increase the number of possible options.

I don’t think McPhee would use the money to overpay at the deadline for a defenseman. My bet is, when he has the room, he’ll look for a trade. He doesn’t want a rental and he doesn’t want to pay more than market price or another overinflated salary. Itmay take a long time to do such a trade, but the deadline isn’t what McPhee shoots for. he’ll take a deal or baragain but he’ll only pick up a cheap guy for a rental, like Sergei Berezin. McPhee’s art is in the deal.

Sit on it, man. Definitely. I can’t think of much this team needs (unless you can buy a good swift kick in the shorts). That’ll alleviate a lot of the “who can we bring up” nonsense and let GMGM stockpile cash. If he sees something he can’t pass up, then sure, but trading for a player just to spend the cash is juvenile and poor budget management.

Never lie, steal, cheat, or drink. But, if you must lie, lie in the arms of the one you love. If you must steal, steal away from bad company. If you must cheat, cheat death. If you must drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
