BJ and CBo both in for the Pens. BJ looks sharp early.

And yet BJ has looked good. Looks a lot like when PIT played PHX (BJ’s only other start) in that the team just isn’t skating or helping him at all.

And the worst PIM in hockey strikes again. The “slash” when a player drops his stick. I swear the Pens have this move down. Breaking the stick is one thing but when the guy drops the stick during a legitimate puck battle that should absolutely not be a PIM.

I just had to endure 20 minutes of anti-Schultz talk in the Mt. Vernon locker room after a stick n puck. It was fucking brutal. They were going on and on about how he sucks and they’re glad he had a ‘kinda good game’ so maybe now somebody will trade for him, blah blah.. the conversation changed to ‘how did the Caps win that game last night? They fell apart so bad!’ Somebody piped up and said, “They won because of JEFF SCHULTZ.”

It was great. The assheads then started asking each other what a winger is supposed to do in the defensive zone. They don’t know this.. but they know that Schultz is a terrible player!? WHAT?!

HEAD EXPLODE!

by RedBirdie on Oct 24, 2009 10:31 PM EDT reply actions

Tough call. It wasn’t very late; not as late as Stevens on Kariya. Booth was definitely watching the puck, which he shouldn’t have done. But I do think Richards aimed for the head. Just the way he falls forward doesn’t look like he was trying to hit him center mass, and that’s my problem with the hit. Of course, I hate Mike Richards and am loathe to give him the benefit of the doubt, so it’s easy for me to see a headhunt. It wasn’t as bad as the first time I saw it, which was in slow-mo. Live action it’s pretty quick.

by RedBirdie on Oct 24, 2009 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

ugh, finish reply before hitting post!

Live action vs. slo-mo brings up an interesting point. When reviewing hits and other infractions for additional discipline, I wonder if the NHL uses slo-mo or not. Assuming, of course, they actually review such things and don’t just whip out the wheel o’ justice.

by RedBirdie on Oct 24, 2009 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I’d think they would use slow-mo to see exactly what happened; what made contact with what. But you need to use live action to determine if it was late or not, and the context of the action.

Richards is 5’11" and Booth is 6’. Booth was basically in an upright skating stance so he wasn’t leaning his head down to shoulder area. Physics and fundamentals dictate that Richards should have put his shoulder right into the middle of Booth’s chest, but somehow the shorter guy gets the taller guy right in the head with his shoulder. That doesn’t fly with me, but I haven’t checked the MS Paint yet.

“Pierre McGuire loves him: No fine or suspension” or “Canadian: No fine or suspension.”

I have more faith in the extremely shaky justice systems of countries that are a half-step from “failed state” status than I do in the NHL’s disciplinary system.

by RedBirdie on Oct 24, 2009 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I try to be objective about it. I think his hit was far dirtier than AO’s slew foot, so he should at least see a fine. I doubt it though. He got all those PIMs so the league won’t feel a need to punish him anymore. I’ve watched a few more times and I do think he was intentionally going high.

Watching Colorado last night against the Canes, they have legit speed and some legit skill with Hejduk, Wolski and Statsny. Duchene is a hell of a rookie and Anderson keeps them in the game as long as he doesn’t leave the crease. Their blueline, outside of Hannan, is uninspiring, or at least they were last night, but I think that team looks legit right now.

Yeah it was a good no call, but I think this is one of those clean hits that does deserve a response. It wasn’t a face to face open ice hit where the guy gets right up. It was a dangerous and awkward hit into the boards. IMO if it is even questionably an illegal hit the players should be allowed to challenge the hitter to a fight; if it’s clearly just a big legal open ice hit that’s when I get pissed when a fight “has to go down.”

That was a pathetic call. But that’s not the reason ANA is getting smoked. I wonder what ref discipline is like; the NHL is pretty vague on how they do it (no shock). Like I said earlier today re: player respect: If the NFL is doing it better, then you need to ask yourself some questions as a league. I absolutely hate the backside ref calls on plays like that. Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
