"After Jeff Schultz scored from 85 feet out, the rest seemed almost easy for the Washington Capitals."
Umm, really? Its 64 feet from the blueline to the goalline, and another 50 feet between the bluelines. So Schulzy was past the red line when he shot that bouncing biscuit? Even NHL.com has it down at 150 feet. Way to fact check, ESPN

ESPN must be getting that confused with the distance between bases… Plus it’s ESPN: They think the Yankees are the best NHL team

Plus it’s ESPN: They thinkthe Yankees are the best NHL teamMatt Barnaby should be analyzing something.
"It's an incredible place. Every seat feels like it's right on top of you. So can't we just make it official? Every big American soccer game should be played in RFK. We need the home-field advantage. Done and done."
Unfortunately, Barnaby isn’t even the worst hockey analyst they have, so they actually improved by hiring him.

I think it was actually closer to 175 feet – he was in the right circle behind the dot when he fired.
Never lie, steal, cheat, or drink. But, if you must lie, lie in the arms of the one you love. If you must steal, steal away from bad company. If you must cheat, cheat death. If you must drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away.
Jeff Schultz is so tall, he makes 175 feet look like 85.

Ok, here's the math...
It’s 64 feet from the goal line to the blue line, 50 feet for center ice, that’s 114 feet. The faceoff dot in the end of the rink is 20 feet from the back wall, and Schultz was about half way between the back wall and the dot, so that’s 54 feet. That’s leg one of the right triangle.
Leg 2 is tough to estimate because the NHL doesn’t actually mandate how far the dots have to be from the side wall, just that they have to be in a line. It looks like the face off dot is about 25 feet from center. That’s leg 2 of the right triangle.
If we all remember the Pythagorean theorem, we know that the square length of the hypotenuse of the right triangle is equal to the length of the sum of the sqares of the legs. So the length of Shultz’s shot can be calulated like this:
Leg 1: 168 feet – Squared is 28,224
Leg 2: 25 feet – Squared is 625
Leg 3: The square root of 28,849
The Square root of 28,849 is an irrational number (kinda like Sean Avery) and comes to 169.8499338 (my calculator ran outta digits at that point.)
So Schultz’s shot went approx. 170 feet.
I finally get to apply my college major to hockey…yay!

Hey, I majored in Math. I didn’t live, eat, breathe or drink math (gads you would not believe what I drank…).
Well except on Pi Day (March 14 i.e. 3.14) where the math department would cover the walls of their lounge with canvas tarps and there would be many dozens of pies (along with some of the interesting things to drink) and there would be much flinging of pies…

Well NHL.com had Brooks Laich’s tap in at what, 14 feet? With the conversion I think ESPN and NHL.com might have him shooting from the exact same spot.
