I'm hearing that Michael Nylander is headed to AHL Grand Rapids for a conditioning stint.

updated:
Nylander has NOT been traded. The veteran center, who has not suited up since being used sparingly in the playoffs, simply has agreed to Griffins to get some game action without taking any ice time away from the Capitals’ prospects in Hershey.
How Nylander performs could determine what happens next. There has been a little interest from some KHL teams, but those clubs have also expressed concern about Nylander’s conditioning and ability to come in and contribute since it’s been so long since his last game. This is Nylander’s chance to prove he can still play, and perhaps, facilitate a trade.
The 37-year-old, by the way, did not have to clear waivers in order to be sent to Grand Rapids. He also still counts toward towards the Capitals’ 23-man roster and his salary still counts against Washington’s salary cap.
I’d add to that update that he can only be in GR for two weeks.

13.8 of the CBA just says “conditioning loan”. It does mention that the Commissioner can investigate the loan if he thinks a team is trying to evade re-entry waivers. Considering Nyls still counts against the cap and the roster limit, I’m guessing Gary’s not going to care.
That section of the CBA also says that the player must agree to the loan (plus he has a NMC anyway), which means it seems to be Nyls is coming around to the idea of a trade.

I haven’t heard anything about him being opposed to a trade or not be willing to waive his NMC. If I were a betting man, I’d say the opportunity for a trade hasn’t come up yet, but that he recognizes the only opportunity he has to get moved (NHL, KHL, Europe…anywhere but the AHL) is to get into a game somewhere.
and if rumor is to be believed, Nyls was willing to go to Chicago last year and it was the ’Hawks that pulled the plug at the last minute.

(Sidenote: at CapsCon, GMGM made a point that in his line of business, your word is your bond and people who go back on their word are out of work pretty soon. Wonder about whom he was talking.)
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
It’s little comments like this that remind me of how angry I was about being sent to Korea during CapsCon.
He’s just bitter that he almost unloaded his anchor. Tallon deserved to lose his job for even considering taking Nyls, not for going back on his word. I have a feeling Tallon may not have been the one to back out; one of the higher ups in the organization may have nixed that deal. I have no idea really, though.
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
Quite possible, but the point was a) CHI backed out and b) GMGM carries a grudge.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Yep. I wonder how far that grudge goes, i.e. would GMGM still refuse to deal with CHI just because Tallon is still in the organization?
If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...
I doubt it, and if he’d be willing to potentially hurt the Caps because of a personal/professional difference, I’d be rather irked.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Agree completely. Irked probably isn’t even strong enough for what I’d feel. If Patrick Sharp gets shopped GMGM damn well better inquire regardless of any personal feelings.

Irrelevant
Since the ’Hawks fired Tallon unceremoniously last summer.
I'm trying to work out a deal with a club in Europe
I think that goes back to F&B’s earlier question on whether McPhee would refuse a trade with Chicago because Tallon still works there.
Technically
He still works for the ’Hawks, but Bowman/McDonough are calling the shots. Making him the “Senior Adviser” is akin to telling him to go into a corner and play with some blocks.

I thought I knew the backstory behind this, but I’m confused. I know that Tallon was beloved by the players, notsomuch by the rest of management.
Did he “go back on his word”, allegedly, about something over the summer? The RFA offer debacle?
Supposedly there was a deal in place between the Caps and Hawks to send Nyls fof Byfuglien and Sopel (or something similar), but CHI backed out after accepting the deal (or having proposed it and had it accepted).

Any of those names stand out to you as blue chip prospects you’ve heard of? I know Abdelkader’s been called up several times, but the only one I recognize with a decent amount of NHL experience is Andy Delmore
Emmerton and McGrath are the only names I remember hearing as potential future NHLers among the forwards, though I don’t follow Detroit all that closely.
I’ll ask Mr. Bird, but Detroit isn’t particularly deep in prospects, iirc. Although they’re very good at keeping good prospects under wrap and then bam! they score on you and turn into stars.
I think part of that is that they had to bring up a lot of them in the offseason.

So: GMGM has found a way to show Nylander without playing him. Not bad; do the caps gain anything else (besides hope) through this move?
No – he still counts against the cap and the 23-man roster.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I suggest this does 2 things.
- One, gives Nyls some much needed exposure as a decent player.
- Two, assuming he produces (which he should), he will look pretty good playing against much less experienced guys.
Might even make some NHL teams look again if he really plays well.
If he stinks it up however…
Or he blows out an ACL when some slow-footed plumber gets beat and sticks out his knee to try to stop him.

Not really, but it lets us exceed the cap. We still miht use the bonus cushion, tho, worse luck. (Someone correct me if I’m wrong.)

The official release from the Caps:
Capitals Assign Center Michael Nylander to Grand Rapids for Conditioning Stint
ARLINGTON, Va. – The Washington Capitals have assigned center Michael Nylander to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League (AHL) on a conditioning stint, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.
Nylander, 37, has played 920 career NHL games for the Capitals, New York Rangers, Boston, Chicago, Tampa Bay, Calgary and Hartford. He has not played a game this season.

Indeed, he’s handled this situation better than probably 99.9% of all NHL players. In fact, my opinion of Nylander’s character, which was high before, has only risen with the professionalism he’s shown throughout all this. That said, I’m still trying to figure out how you can go on a conditioning assignment when you’re not hurt and practice fully with the Caps everyday. I need someone to explain that to me.

I get the feeling that Bettman just wants this thing to be done and won’t stand in the way of anything that might make it happen.
What gives you that feeling? To be honest I haven’t seen/heard anything official from Bettman about Nylander or the situation.
Because it has to be a bit of an embarrassment to the league to have a player like Nylander just sitting in limbo and all these constant rumors flying around daily. There probably isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t hear it mentioned on XM Home Ice or see a mention of it on Kukla’s Korner or some Puck Daddy. It’s not positive news for the league and nobody’s benefitting from this current situation.
If Gary Bettman is worried about an overpaid Swedish center rather than, say, securing a broadcast option for the customers/hockey fans that subscribe to a pretty large satellite company, then he REALLY needs to be let go.

He’s no Jim Ballsilie if that’s what you mean. I’m not saying it’s a major concern for the NHL. Far from it, but it is a big issue for the Caps as evidenced by the fan reaction blowing up on all the related sites. And the NHL really is a very private club of 30 members, so anything that is a negative for one of those members is a concern to soem degree for the League. Is Bettman losing sleep over it? No. Would he like to have it resolved? Yes. Would he do anything he legally can to help the Caps get Nylander moved? Double yes. That’s all I’m saying.
I fail to see how it’s relevant in any way (positive or negative) way to the NHL. With all of the drama surrounding bigger issues (coughPhoenixcough) I’m guessing Bettman doesn’t think or care about how individual teams play their players (with the exception of elite players…which Nyls is not).
In a league of ~700 players, it’s a little embarrassing for one of the 100 highest paid players (#81 by cap hit) to be benched. A little embarrassing, not very embarrassing.

But at this point we’re debating semantics. My original question was in response to this, and my question was answered, there is no documented evidence regarding Bettman even giving the Nylander issue a moment’s thought.
And since he still counts against the roster-limit and cap, there’s no circumvention going on here with which the League would concern itself.

Quite so. FAR more comments here than CI. I wonder who really asploded.
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.
He said it “asploded with people saying they have inside information that Nylander is joining the Red Wings.”
I think it’s just great that we can find out so quickly. With props to Cory re: Holtby, let’s give Tarik his due too. This new media revelation is pretty freaking awesome.

Grand Rapids Owes Us
Their GM Bob McNamara is the guy who recommended Bruce Cassidy to McPhee. He should not only take N\ylander, he should pay half his salary :-)

Because they don’t play NHL games with their AHL squad.

Well, they’ve got a very impressive list of alums overall. I was just dredging up some names from Caps’ past.

Gruden :)
Also, they weren’t affiliated with the Red Wings during the tenure of all of those players. Some years they were independent, I believe, but I know there was a time when they were affiliated with the Sens. The Detroit affiliation started somewhere around ’02 or ’03.
Europe
The Wings don’t necessarily stash their prospects in the AHL, often they bring them over directly from top-tier Euro leagues.
I'm trying to work out a deal with a club in Europe
Even then, I don’t think they’re dripping in prospect talent. They just do a great job of developing the guys with potential that they get.

Don’t forget Harry Potter and George Weasley.
One guy just drove his semi as a float. I guess semis are cool.

You left out Brian Wilsie…
There was a reason these guys were playing in the AHL for Grand Rapids….they were minor league players
That era in Caps history should be long forgotten, please…

That era allowed the team to acquire parts of today’s team.
That era did, but none of the names above were parted with during the Fire Sale….those were the guys left behind here…

On a funny side note, when my email spell checks Nylander it’s first option is Cylinder. That makes me laugh.
An explanation cannot be as simple as connecting the dots as such 1) we see a link regarding a KHL team’s interest in Nylander turning sour because of his inactivity, then within hours, 2) he is off to the AHL for conditioning to rectify said inactivity.
Or is it?
well, at least Puck Daddy got some snark out of it.
Remember kids: Just say ‘no’ to ‘no-movement clauses’ for unrestricted free agents. A public service announcement from GM George McPhee.
Nyls was happy to be sent to Grand Rapids as soon as he was assured Nolan Yonkman was not on their roster.
I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

Nylander interview with Swedish TV. A bit in English but mostly in Swedish. I’m not sure if you can watch it outside of Sweden though.
They say different things to different people(Caps brass). It’s a sensitive situation, I’ve gotten to that stage in my career where I make a lot of money and It looks like the Club wants to play other players and my salary prevents that from happening.
Nylander says that he just wants to play and right now this Club (Grand Rapids) gives him that opportunity and he is planing on making the best out of the situation.

I was busy translating but I’m not your buddy, pal or whatever we are up to. 3- ways are always messy.
A Swedish girl talking about messy 3-ways… I love The Rink.

Sorry, I’ve been glued to Borderlands. Haven’t really been paying attention.
What’s this about Circles needing conditioner? Isn’t he bald?

Oh, wait. Conditioning. So.. you mean, like, while he hasn’t been playing any hockey, he hasn’t had the free time to, say, condition? Rugrats at home should at least help with cardio and deadlift for the crawlers. What’s left? Making sure he hasn’t forgotten how to double back, look around, try to buy time, and give the puck to the wing pressing him?

i realize i’m a bit late on posting my thoughts but i find the “conditioning” classification peculiar. I mean, wasn’t it just a few weeks ago when camp started that all the press was, “Nylander is in the best shape of his life. …. He’s added 15 lbs of muscle. … he’s the hardest skater at practice. …. etc etc.” I understand saying that to make him more appealing but I got to believe (as been thrown around here) one of two scenario’s are occuring very soon;
1) He’s doing this so the KHL can see him in real game time – to appease the recent quotes/press. blah blah blah
OR
2) Maybe Holland is sniffing around knowing he can get Nylander for pennies on the dollar. I mean they are a veteran team who just lost a key C for the year (Franzen) and Nylander could fill a void without it being a long-term commitment. (They could flip him next year when his NMC goes void). Afterall, it was an arrangement worked out by Holland and GMGM (not GMGM and AHL as many posters said earlier above). Before you roast me – think about it.
get Nylander for pennies on the dollar
I wish this was possible. Unfortunately, with this CBA, his contract goes with him, and there’s no real way around that. I hope they sort that out in the next CBA — this situation isn’t good for anyone.

Franzen from what I’ve seen of him doesn’t play C, he plays W with Zetterberg or with Filppula. My knowledge may be outdated on that though. Point is, DET doesn’t need a scoring line center (which is the only role Nylander can play).
by red army line on Oct 22, 2009 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions
Franzen plays C/W just like Hank. It all depends on how Babcock wants to use him. He’ll also be back by the end of the year so at some point DET won’t be able to afford Nyls and Franzen so there is no point for DET to pick up Nyls in the short term.

Either way, Detroit has plenty of NHL centers. No need for another.

Don’t think so – unless I’m mistaken, the contract-matching phenomenon in the NBA is caused by rules that allow teams to make trades when over the cap as long as the salaries are within a certain percentage of each other. It’s an extension of the rules that allow you to go over the cap to re-sign your players and sign players under certain exemptions. In other words, if a NBA team wanted to offload a $10m contract on a team with $10m in cap space and take nothing back, I think they could.
I don’t think the NHL has an equivalent to this, since it’s a hard cap (aside from the LTIR business), but I’m sure someone here can correct me if I’m wrong.
