I’m watching PHI/CAR. Carcillo just hit Whitney from behind and Gleason fought him for it. Carcillo got a PIM for the hit, and Gleason got a PIM for instigating. Shouldn’t a fight in response for a dirty hit be granted immunity from instigating? Isn’t that one of the main purposes of fighting? What is the NHL doing here.

I saw that too – watched the first frame before heading for the local public skate for some exercise.
I think the instigator call should be waived if the instigation is clearly in response to an action for which the player being challenged has been called for a penalty, i.e. if player A instigates on player B and player B’s about to head to the box anyway, instigation is waved off.

Yeah that makes sense but in the CAR game they repeatedly said that Colin Campbell told the league they would be “aggressively enforcing it” this year. Aggressive enforcement is fine when, you know, it’s actually instigating. But a response to a dirty hit isn’t instigating. Is Colin Campbell telling me that Gleason needed that Instigator for sticking up for a guy that got railed from behind more than Thornton deserved an instigator for two hand whacking Erskine after a clean hit? Joke.

Checking out PIT-NYR. Switching back and forth for much of the night, I imagine.
Fight, you time-wasting figure skaters!
Bob Errey. He’s terrible. You know what else is terrible? That PIM Sid just picked up. Great leadership and maturity.

Yeah, that was ridiculous. Reminds me of Chara’s retaliatory penalty last night.
Fight, you time-wasting figure skaters!
Yeah. Not a good move in either case, both in response to pretty innocuous hits as well.

but Sid is the Greatest. Captain. EVER!!!!!!!!!!
(I’m watching baseball—every game tonight is a total blow out. and the Os and Nats are actually on the right side for once)
I only watched part of PHI/CAR, but I think Philly plain had CAR outclassed. CAR wasn’t able to get anything really sharp on net.

Yeah I agree. I was expecting a whole lot more from CAR, but maybe I’m just buying into all the hype everyone else is heaping on them; or worse, maybe PHI is that good.

Guess we’ll find out on Tuesday. Tuesday will be PHI’s first run-in with one of the East’s other powerhouses, and we’ll see what happens.
(For references, I consider PIT, PHI, BOS, and WAS to be the East’s major powerhouses this season.)

not CAR? Certain segments of the hockey population keep insisting that CAR is an eastern powerhouse. (and I think they’re smoking crack)
The evidence so far this season would seem to bear out the recreational substances assertion.

It’s a small sample size yet. The ’Wings are 0-2, Colorado is 2-0 and some players are on pace for 200+ points.
That said, the ‘Canes probably aren’t as good this year as some of their more vocal fanbase seems to think they are. Especially when Cole is on the shelf for 4-6 weeks with a broken leg.

That was my point all along. CAR has no depth. They are old and counting on guys to stay healthy when those guys haven’t stayed healthy for years now. They have skill, and could get hot at any time, but I don’t see them being a powerhouse year-long.

Didn’t they finish out of the playoffs the two years prior to this one? Any idea what’s coming down the pipe for them? Do they have NHL-level help on the way, or are they in for a period of retooling?

If you ask me they don’t have much coming. If you ask Canes Country they have a bunch of young talent coming down the pike. Bowman was pretty good in the WHL but I’m not sure he’s going to be a real impact player in the NHL. Suter is a 3C that could maybe play 2C, IMO, but they’re high on him. Boychuk is small but talented and he may be their best prospect. I made a crack about them paying all that money to Cam Ward because they didn’t have to worry about paying anyone else. Staal and Ward are basically the only two people they have worth locking up long term.
FWIW Hockeysfuture has them ranked at 20th.

I wish I could get as excited about anything as the Avs PxP guy gets about a mediocre scoring chance.

Yeah. Comcast can stop eating dicks. For now.

Anyone catch the pre-game stuff for the EDM game? At least the Caps don’t do that.

Yeah I didn’t catch much of the first but it looks like a good one. I’m primarily watching ANA/SJS. Heatley took a PIM, Marleau scores a SHG, Heatley gets the puck right out of the box and has a 2 on 1 with Joe and Joe gets the goal. What a fantasy play.

I’m back and forth with CGY and SJS (which is looking like Caps v. TOR right now)…I think McClellan kicked his team in the ass after the slop v. COL
