10:1 odds on Mike Green winning the Norris? I don’t think he will, but I would definitely put $100 down on that.
Also, the following people should be banned from ever talking about hockey:
- Greeny
- Golic
- Kornheiser
- Wilbon
- Bill Simmons
- Any ESPN Broadcaster other than Bucci-God (and Chris Berman’s nicknames)
- Bill Simmons
- Any writer for a National Newspaper or Website
- Bill Simmons

Only thing worse than hearing most talking heads talk about hockey is when they talk soccer.
As to your specifics, great list, but I’d make one edit.
Any ESPN Broadcaster other than Bucci-God (and Chris Berman’s nicknames)
In addition to Mr. Buccigross, Linda Cohn, goalie and Rangers fan, should get a pass, as well as David Amber and John Saunders.
Where exactly are they hiding John Saunders? He must be doing NBA, which would explain why I haven’t seen him in two years.
Russian Machine Never Breaks
He still does Sports Reporters on Sundays as well as hosting ESPN on ABC college football and basketball studio stuff. Also, if I recall correctly he had a medical issue awhile back and was off the air for a bit.
I flip by Sports Reporters sometimes and even on occasion stop to watch if a decent reporter is on screen. Inevitably, in short order, I hear Lupica’s voice which then sends me scurrying to change the channel quicker than an Al Iafrate slapper.
Captive audience… it comes on right before the 2-hour NFL primer. I’m usually drinking my coffee and slowly gaining coherence while it’s on…
Linda Cohn’s a former goalie??? No shit! : ] 110% awesome, I proclaim!

You can coherence while listening to Lupica or Albom? You are a better person than I am.
Yes, Linda actually played for her high school boys team when she was a kid. A fair amount of her book “Cohn Head” involves hockey as she’s a big puckhead.

Since I can’t expect you all to read every link in a given Clips post, let me give an example of why Kevin Paul Dupont is one of the best in the business:
The disintegration actually began prior to Laich’s nifty backhand roof shot. With 17:00 gone in the first, the Bruins made a dog’s breakfast out of a line change, resulting in an extra skater, resulting in a penalty for having too many men on the ice (also known as the Full Lewie, in memory of one-year coach Dave Lewis).
…
The jawbreaker, Ovechkin’s second goal, came with Lucic badly failing to get his body on the flying Russian superstar as he zipped down the slot.
Ovechkin could all but be heard saying, "Boy, I say, boy, get away, you bother me!’’ as he Foghorn Leghorned by the turnstiling Lucic and got a knock on Tom Poti’s relay.

“We’re not a cocky bunch, but we have a quiet confidence about our team,” Brooks Laich said. “We believe in our ability, we believe in our head coach and our management. I think we have fantastic players. I think we put a great product on the ice, and I think when we play our game, we’re as dangerous as any team. So hopefully [the bookies are] right.”
“I don’t like thinking about those things,” said Matt Bradley, the only player I spoke with who was uncomfortable with the topic. “I mean, that’s good to hear, but everyone’s talking about all these things, and yeah, our goal is to win the Stanley Cup, but there’s a million things that you have to do before that, before you can even start thinking about that, right? Our first goal, obviously real short-term, is Thursday night….That’s why the thing about Vegas, yeah, that’s obviously a compliment to us that people think we’re going in the right direction. But you can’t start thinking about that, because there’s so much work you have to do.”

re: Alzner
while i don’t think he is quite ready to be as effective as ShaMo or Schultz, i think another season in the AHL will actually hurt his development. my opinion is based not on the quality of the coaching of the Bears, but more so on Alzner’s mindset. He is kind of a headcase, and I believe the major hype surrounding him a big part of that.
probably time he earn his wings in the NHL and learn with the big boys.
by ns on Oct 2, 2009 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions
He is kind of a headcase
Alzner’s come across extremely polished, mature, and thoughtful in every interview I’ve seen with him or any time I’ve seen him quoted. What’s your basis for this assertion?
by David Getz on Oct 2, 2009 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions 2 recs
yeah, absolutely not a headcase. His head is crewed on straight and while he may be a little disappointed that he’s once again caught in the numbers game, he’s down in Hershey working his ass off. (and given his remarks about Sloan during the playoffs, he’s probably pretty thrilled that his D partner from last season made the big club, because that’s the kind of guy he is)
I think I get where NS is coming from. Alzner is a bit too smart for himself and tends to over think what he is doing on the ice.
He’s said before that he’s had problems because of that and also had problems dwelling on if every little thing he did would send him back to the minors.
One guy just drove his semi as a float. I guess semis are cool.
yupyup. the fear of being sent down will screw this guy up. i think he needs GMGM to literally say “listen, we drafted you, you’re our guy, you’re not quite there yet but its time you come up and learn because we think you can be something special. do it.”
by ns on Oct 2, 2009 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions
Let me get this straight
You think that Alzner is a guy who lets pressure, specifically the pressure of being sent down to the minors, mess with his head. Putting aside my disagreement with this statement, you think the best way to solve it is by… calling him up? Why? So he can play in a much more pressure-packed environment where the slightest mistake might cause him to be scratched or sent down (since he’s the only remaining defenseman who can be without clearing waivers).
I don’t think you’ve thought through this argument very far.
I'm trying to work out a deal with a club in Europe
i’m saying i think Alzner is the type of player that needs reinforcement from mgmt that he its time for his growing pains in the NHL.
no question there will be massive pressure and ups and downs. i’m just saying he will develop better in the NHL at this point and with point blank support from mgmt.
by ns on Oct 2, 2009 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions
I get the impression the suggestion is that a path of sorts be cleared for Alzner so that he doesn’t have the pressure of every little mistake resulting in riding the pine or being demoted.
I think
That he’s got the least pressure of his career until Nyls gets moved. He’s a smart kid – along with everyone else around these parts, he knows he’s a cap casualty. Bruce told him as much. Right now, I doesn’t matter if he plays brilliantly, or stinks up the joint. He’s staying in Hershey.
Once Nyls and one defenseman go away, I think that he or Carlson come up and stay up.
I'm trying to work out a deal with a club in Europe
the headcase opinion revolves around his confidence. he says he is ready and working hard, blablabla, and i agree on the mature and polished image (and i believe its legit)…but i can’t help but get the feeling he is full of doubt and the only thing that will cure that is succeeding/failing/learning in the NHL.
p.s. most of my opinions are just gut feelings. not a numbers man myself :)
by ns on Oct 2, 2009 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions
GMGM has said that he likes the D to get a long apprenticeship in HER because they get confidence and round out there game. That way when things go bad at the NHL level they can draw upon that experience and realize they are still good players and they can work through it. Rushing up Alzner to make him feel better is not a good solution, IMO.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
Alzner isn’t a headcase at all. He’s just about 1/2 a step behind the NHL level right now, ditto for Carlson. The Caps have 3 UFA defensemen after this season (Pothier, Jurcina, Morrisonn) so these two will wait their turn. I suspect they’ll both be contributors this year since no NHL team has ever gone a full season with 0 man-games lost on defense.
They’ll both be Caps for a very long time…
Let's go Caps!
by MikeL-Pivonka on Oct 2, 2009 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions
Read the whole thread (or just a few comments up) headcase probably wasn’t the right word for ns to pick but I think there are valid points.
One guy just drove his semi as a float. I guess semis are cool.
He’s just about 1/2 a step behind the NHL level right now
I don’t think he’s going to gain that 1/2 step in the A. Time to bring him up and let him make the mistakes he’s going to make. Got to get them out of the way sometime.

by Gould Old Days on Oct 2, 2009 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions
I sorta agree with this. I think learning on the job at the NHL level is a better solution, and I think the Caps are good enough to overcome his learning mistakes. I disagree that he can’t learn more from the AHL though. Especially for D you can continue to learn and think the game at high speed in the AHL.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
Right now
The kid has around a half a year of AHL experience. If, by 25 games in, he’s totally dominating, then we can start this bandwagon. Until that time, or Nyls’ imminent departure, it’s all premature e-speculation.
I'm trying to work out a deal with a club in Europe
Fair enough. Alzner would develop faster in the NHL, but he’s still going to develop in the AHL (at a slower rate). Nothing wrong with having him there.
Atta dinnin stick a who!
by Gould Old Days on Oct 2, 2009 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions
Good question. I still think that we can deal a blueliner and have plenty of depth. Alzner’s ready, imo, so why not let him play.
by mechanicsville on Oct 2, 2009 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions
I dunno, if Mo and Pothier continue to play like they did last night, we have a solid top 4. Bring Alzner up later (assuming a Nylander exit) and have Ersk and Shultze alternate at number 6. I’d love to upgrade on D but I’m dubious that even with salary cap flexibility, they’re going to be able to bring in a clear upgrade without trading Alzner, Carlson or Neuvirth which I doubt GMGM is going to do (or should do at this point). My glance at the UFA DMen who might be available down the road for a draft pick and more marginal player/prospect aren’t that compelling.
See, I think Schultz is at least #5 and should play every night. And, Erskine, well, he’s often a liability. 23 & 4 are clearly the two weakest D on the roster right now. So, if Morrisonn happens to be traded, then I feel quite comfortable with Alzner stepping in, and letting 4 & 23 split time.
by mechanicsville on Oct 2, 2009 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions
Don’t disagree with you on 23 and 4 though at least 4 brings toughness that’s nice to have. 23? Bleh! Which reminded me of a great line from JP’s mock arbitration on Jurcina:
“In sum, to call Jurcina one-dimensional would mislead the reader by implying there is an area of his game that is particularly strong.”
I’m have a similar line of thinking. ShaMo looks to be back to his old self. Heck he even had a nice blast on goal last night. I expect BB will rotate Shultz into the lineup by Tuesday at the latest.
Now if the situation arises I’m fine trading away Sloan or Juice to free up cap space and/or help with a Nylander deal if we need a throw in. However, I see no hurry to do so. Injuries are bound to happen and the 8 guys could become 6 very quickly. Our depth helped us through rough patches last season. If we were talking major upgrade that is one thing, but I’m not seeing any major upgrades coming out of the current options.

Oh Carey Price, is there anything you can’t ruin?
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
Hmm.
His emergence in MTL did allow us to land Huet for a 2nd round pick, which allowed us to get into the playoffs 2 years ago. . .
I think it’s the other way around – Gainey and MTL are going to ruin that poor (rich) kid.
I'm trying to work out a deal with a club in Europe
Yeah you could be right, I was just making a joke about him destroying Markov’s season. Price sure didn’t fuck up in the Calder Cup playoffs (though from a HER perspective he still ruined it) and he’s obviously got talent.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
The Habs will have him back in time for the playoffs (if they make it). I feel really bad for him for the Olympics though. He may be Russia’s best defenseman. It sucks if he has to miss them (or if he’s less than 100%), and it sucks for Russia.

by Gould Old Days on Oct 2, 2009 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah I was thinking that too. I guess in an ideal world MON falls apart without him leaving themselves in no shape to get back into the playoff picture, but Markov heals fast enough to get a couple weeks of rehab hockey in before lighting it up in the Olympics because he’s one of the freshest players there (after only Green Life 52).

Dating back to the end of the 2008-09 regular season, Laich now has a pair of two-goal games in his last three games. He has scored six goals in his last five regular season games, and he has 11 points (six goals, five assists) in his last 12 regular season games.

After Ovechkin’s second goal Tim Thomas gave Lucic the “really, dude?” look. Actually, it was more like “Duuuuuude, reaaaally?”
I don't care how you score goals. Pretty or ugly. The ballet or the bulldozer. However you do it, just do it. And make sure you do it more than the other guys.
I thought it was more of a “WTF, bro?”
Maybe play with an edge, be a little more physical -- maybe be more of a prick out there.
Theo’s reaction after his lone goal let in was quite a nice one too.
One guy just drove his semi as a float. I guess semis are cool.
Haha, yeah I noted that too. The “god damn, we’re still spanking them but I was THIS close to an opening night shutout” face.

Yeah, it was pretty good, too, but just one of three expressions goalies generally use when giving up a breakaway. The first, Theo’s was “DOOOH!” Then there’s the “DRAT!” with a swipe at the air with a stick(as commonly used by Osgood). Finally, there’s Brodeur’s “%&@#$” followed by a complaint to the ref and tossing your stick against the boards.

Thanks for the testimonial.
Any desire for a couple of RSS feeds? E.g., individual game results & running standings? Anybody use RSS?
Also, last year I threw together a quick mobile (read: no graphics) interface to the site so I could make my picks when I was sitting at Verizon Center having an “oh shit!” moment mere minutes before 7pm. Any interest in mobile picking?
Pick SPG for your chance to win probably nothing.
This just in
Bill Mcreary just picked a STL defender to let DET score a goal. Hmmm….
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
I don’t know if any of you can stand to watch have the Pitt pregame on (via NHL Network) but… holy bagel, the FSN-Pittsburgh guys are completely unbearable. I couldn’t appreciate Joe B and Locker more watching this…

Ugh. That’s the feed they’re carrying? I’m watching PHI/CAR now but I was going to flip back and forth.

Yes, they’re streaming the FSN-P stream verbatim. I’m not opposed to FSN in general, some regions are pretty good.. I liked the FSN (West? Pacific?) coverage of the Sharks, Ducks, Kings, whatever… it was good.
But those two guys they had were awful. Absoloutely, undeniably awful.

Yeah I agree. At least CAR has one good guy (color guy is good, PxP I’m not a fan of).

Man, that trophy looks really pretty…

You sure you aren’t confusing the 2 voices. If not, you are first person I know who can stand Tripp.
The PxP guy and his “hey hey whattya say” garbage I cannot stand. I used to not like Tripp but for whatever reason I think he’s a lot more reasonable now and he does make some good observations; he’s not a total frikkin’ homer.

Harwood is much better when calling games for Versus than calling Canes games I will admit. I do like his voice for PxP. However, Tripp just grates on me. Between his voice and weird comments he just doesn’t do it for me. Some games I really wonder what game he’s watching.
I’m not a huge fan of the tandem; it’s one of the reasons I don’t watch a ton of ‘Canes hockey. We just disagree as to who is worse. Do you like opera man’s voice in PHX?

Same here. I tend to more west coast games of other teams since they aren’t on at same time as Caps.
Strader’s ok. I’m just happy Pang is gone. I’m not a Tyson Nash fan, but at least he won’t be yelling “Holy jumping” every 2 seconds or sound like Saddam’s information minister when discussing the team.
I used to love it when Keilback did the radio out here and McCleod and Simmer did TV. 2 very good combos. Travesty that Gretzky and his crew dumped Keilback. The guy had been with the franchise since Winnipeg. He knew his stuff. He was a little over-animated during play at times, but in a Gus Johnson sort of way.
Better Gus Johnson than Gus Triandos.

And yeah, I watch a lot more west coast hockey for the same reason. I also happen to think as a division the Pacific and Northwest have solid broadcast teams so it makes the games more enjoyable to watch.

Agree. Ducks, Kings, Sharks, Canucks teams are all solid. We used to get the Kings on what became FSAZ before the Yotes arrived, so I know Bob Miller’s voice well. I watch a fair amount of Flames games due to being a big Iginla fan.
When my parents lived outside of Pittsburgh (in Uniontown for those curious, that place is as big a hole as Pittsburgh is), the only hockey I could get when I was home on breaks was the Pitt games. Their announcers were terrible then, and they didnt even have Crosby to to fellate then. They had no hockey knowledge short of the fact that Mario Lemieux played there once. I longed to hear Joe B. and Locker
Scratched Bourque. TV off. Guess I’ll get an early start on my trip to New York.

Even assuming they intend to play him lots, probably too much to ask for him to be up to speed with the systems this fast. Better to ease him in.
