Ovechkin Named Third Star of the Week

"[Alexander] Ovechkin led all scorers for the week with six points (four goals, two assists) as the Capitals (4-2-2) gained five of six points and moved into first place in the Southeast Division. Ovechkin began the week by notching two assists in a 3-2 shootout loss to the New Jersey Devils on Oct. 12. He recorded two goals in a 4-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks Oct. 15 and tallied two more plus the shootout winner in a 3-2 win against the Nashville Predators Oct. 17. Ovechkin is the NHL leader in goals (nine), points (16) and shots (61) in eight games - all three on a pace significantly higher than his career average. - NHL.com"

Congrats, Alex!

He has to slow down at some point, right? (that’s what the rest of the NHL is asking)

Should be “THIRD” star, according to NHL link. Bryzgalov and Anderson are #’s 1 &2.

Here’s something I thought I’d never see – goalies for Phoenix and Colorado posting better weeks than #8. Amazing.

I wholeheartedly endorse superior goaltending by other teams, as long as it promises to stay out in the Western Conference.

Wonder how much of that is utter shock about the other two doing as well as they are. Not to say they’re not doing really well – they are – just sayin’. Nobody’s surprised if Ovi is a 2 point / game player anymore.

Props to Puck Daddy for their remarks:

Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, Colorado Avalanche goaltender Craig Anderson and Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin have been named the NHL ‘Three Stars’ for the week ending Oct. 18. This will still matter to two of these men when the third is playing in the postseason.

Plus, the west was crazy last year — yeah, a few teams (like PHX and COL) fell out at the end pretty hard, but I remember there being something like only 8 points separating 6th place from 15th with only a month to go…or something similar to that.

You can’t overlook the importance of getting points early in the season either—they can go a long way at the end of the year when everyone’s fighting for ’em.

Amazing Alex..

Gads, this is the year he’s going to demolish the league, isn’t it? Wayne Gretzky won his first Cup (of 4) in his 5th year… this is year 5 of Alex’s career.

Then again, considering how good he was as a rookie, going against the best defensive players every night, and still being among the league leaders in scoring. Hell, he turned Chris Clark into a 30 goal guy, and Zubrus into a 25 goal guy…

The best is yet to come…

Let's go Caps!

I was sort of surprised that this invoked so much emotion and discussion from people. I would have spent more time on thinking about how many ice cubes I want in my next glass of water than this.

by zephyr on Oct 19, 2009 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

When I’m going with a gin and tonic I go about halfway so it doesn’t watter down. Scotch I’ll go with close to a full glass of ice. Gatorade I drink neat. I’m an elite, so I only drink bottled water; and I’ve yet to see a bottle of water with ice cubes in it. Hope that helps.

Rec’d for scotch choice, but neat is the way to go. Slooooow sipping.

If you must have it cold or on the rocks, the bigger the piece of ice, the better. It will still cool your scotch, but it won’t melt as fast because it has a higher ratio of volume to surface.

by Knee high to a duck on Oct 19, 2009 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Drinking fast prevents ice melting and watering it down. That’s why I’m not concerned. Proportions would probably clear some of this up. I’ll drink like 4 oz. of scotch at a time so there seems like more ice but it’s really only a couple cubes. I drink gin and tonics by the pint so I fill just about half the glass with ice. More ice but lower proportion.

If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.

by Fehr and Balanced on Oct 19, 2009 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Depends on the ice

Bar ice or “cheater ice” cools faster but melts quicker. High grade denser ice is the way to go. Some nicer bars have at least 6 different kinds of ice. If your gonna be an elitist, being an ice snob is a must.

by Natty Bumppo on Oct 20, 2009 3:06 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

“Better” ice? From that article, the only difference among the types discussed is in the amount of the surface area exposed to the beverage (the biggest factor in melting rates, all other things being equal). Nothing about dissolved gases or the mineral content of the water, both of which could affect taste.

If you've read this far...seek help.

by ThePeerless on Oct 20, 2009 7:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I thought one of the factors was how much air was trapped inside the ice. But I read it late last night.

by TylerG on Oct 20, 2009 8:27 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

(And, of course, the reason the media writes nothing about the ice is that anyone knows you don’t really want ice in your single-malt. Maybe a little water back, but not ice.)

by TylerG on Oct 20, 2009 8:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

A bigger piece of ice won’t melt as fast, but it will dilute your drink faster. The more surface area exposed to the drink, the more volume will melt. So even if only a small portion of the cube melts, there’s more water in your drink than if you used a smaller cube, even though a larger portion of the small cube melted.

by LSF76 on Oct 20, 2009 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

False. If there equal volumes of ice the smaller ice cubes will have more surface area. Obviously one big ice cube compared to one small ice cube will be different, but if volume is equal the bigger one is lower surface area. I rocked earth science (get it?).

I was referring to one big cube vs. one small cube. You are correct about one piece vs. many pieces which add up to the same total volume.

Nix the ice in the scotch. Just add a bit of room temp filtered water to open it up a bit, and sip away. I know you’re drinking decent scotch, which will do much better when not cold.

At the risk of ruining my elite status, I’m not really a connoisseur or a snob about my scotch, and I personally just like it better when it’s cold. I pour small glasses (I have a pair of sweeeet single malt glasses) so I’m not worried about it getting watered down too much; it’s all about temperature.
