Why should we be?
We have no offense. No defense. No goaltending. No PP. No PK.

Sounds like a trap game if I’ve ever seen one.

I was tempted to go on a screed about Martin Erat, but I’m kind of saving it for now.
Basically, he’s the anti-Ovechkin. Alex goes to the net like a mad dog after a piece of steak. Erat, on the other hand, peels away at the slightest threat and prefers to waterbug with the puck around the perimeter.

Losing 4 in a row is one thing, but the Preds have simply played awful of late. We’re used to a lack of scoring, but soft defense is another thing entirely.

It’d be fun to see an “Anything you can do, I can do better” battle between Mike Green and Shea Weber.
I’m guessing that would end pretty quickly when it got to bodychecking and fighting… :)

Fighting, sure (Greener ain’t 6’4", 230) but Green definitely has it in him to lay people out if the ain’t paying attention. He doesn’t hit all that often, but when he does it can be brutal.

Ovechkin forechecks much more effectively with 9 and 22. I think when Backstrom and Semin are out there, he lets them play the D and he cherry-picks. With 9 and 22 he’s much more active looking for a takeaway. I like it.

I generally think the Caps leave their skates too often — both because they go down prematurely and because they get out of position and have to dive in desperation. But that was a textbook play by Fehr, and he doesn’t get any credit for it because he didn’t actually block the shot — he forced the shooter to shoot high.

Players occasionally have seasons where they shoot way over their career percentage and end up with career-high numbers as a result, then regress. It’s possible that he makes it, it’s just fantastically unlikely, even with 9 goals in 8 games. He still needs 41 more in 42 contests, which is better than he’s ever done in his career. His best 50 game stretch was 43, if I recall correctly.
by Knee high to a duck on Oct 17, 2009 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions
If the ad nauseum NHLN re run of Gretzky’s sprint to 50 in 39 games(!) serves me, he potted 9 in games 38 and 39. Nine. Gotta think Ovie needs at least 7-8 hatties in this day and age.

And he has none through 8 games so far, although he could get one tonight.
by Knee high to a duck on Oct 17, 2009 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions
To me, the understanding is that he has a shot at it if and only if he gets a few hat trick-plus games to cushion his total from no-goal nights. If we see him do that tonight, there will some chatter.

Frankly, you can be a gritty, physical team that’s no fun to play against without taking stupid roughing calls.
It worked for Anaheim because they had JS Giguere playing inspired hockey, with two first-ballot hall-of-fame defensemen on the ice, one with unbelievable wheels and one nasty, brutish, positionally sound sonofabitch. It does not work for us.
I’m not saying we shouldn’t be physical, I’m saying let’s not give the other team needless powerplays.

Huge save by Varly on ANOTHER FRICKIN’ BREAKAWAY?!?! WTF IS THIS?!
I need 100% of you guys to give 110% 100% of the time.
We should’ve been up 5-0 three minutes into this period. Not all Varly’s fault we’re tied.
The keyboard is mightier.
BB better chew their heads off in intermission

I’m at my uncle’s place in Pittsburgh with no Center Ice. Can anyone explain why it’s 2-2? Bad Caps play or bad Varlamov?
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
both - mostly bad def….. Varly couldn’t handle one (a good shot by Preds) and the other one was a softy .

Playing too lax. Varly’s only bad on the second goal. First goal was legit.

mix of the 2, weber had a bulled that would be amazing to stop but the second goal was pretttttty weak
Thanks everyone. I’m stuck watching the Pens game with my Pens fan family. You decide which is worse.

I’ve been drinking since before noon, and kicked it up a notch after dinner. For all the Pens flaws, it’s a drinkin’ family.

Caps dominated the second period and came out of it down 0-2 for the period. The Preds didn’t get a shot on net until 10:32 or something like that. Ellis kept them in the game and then Weber blasted one over Varly’s glove as the trailer. One soft goal a la Brads on Lundqvist in Game 5 and it’s all tied up.
Semin failed to convert on a breakaway and didn’t finish on another 2-1. Other than not finding the net, he’s having a great game.
The 8-9-22 line continues to look great.

I’d say the latter, though the second goal was flung enough to give him a pass on. Honestly if he can’t sort this out and Neuvirth is good to go, I’d consider making a change within the next couple of weeks.
"It's an incredible place. Every seat feels like it's right on top of you. So can't we just make it official? Every big American soccer game should be played in RFK. We need the home-field advantage. Done and done."

Varly also unquestionably lucked out on a breakaway attempt which hit the post, came back to his skate, and bounced off the same post again. A near disaster.

It’s nothing personal against the guy, but those soft goals really hurt team morale, and the meltdowns can’t happen in NHL games. The fact that Neuvirth is also a viable option (at least once he gets his legs under him) means less patience for now with Varly.
agree

Theodore was in the same position last year. Took him a while to start putting forth solid goaltending (comeback regular season game against Rangers.) I worry more about demoting Semyon and messing with his confidence long term. This is the regular season … a long grind and the reason why Theo is #1.
I’d rather the Caps take the route in handling Semyon the way the Pens handled Fleury as opposed to the way Montreal handled Price. Or, for that matter how the Caps handled Carey a while back.
dude the ice are kicking butt tonight. del zotto making me proud.

Caps are playing very poorly. Crowd is totally out of the game.

Yup, it’s been a good, hard-fought game and Ellis has been standing on his head.

How many times has Ovechkin scored his third goal as the GWG in OT? Only time I can think of us @Anahiem his rookie year
I feel the same away about avatars as Ovechkin does about speed limits.
Right ATL. Wasn’t that time he scored like 0:05 into OT?

Sth looks familiar here, huh? This Nashville team reminds me of the pre-Rock the Red glamour Caps … hardly any talent, but wearing the hard hat and bringing the lunch pail.
Last game the Caps broke the streak of losses to the Sharks and Ovi scoreless against them.
Hopefully tonight we don’t break the streak of wins when Ovi scores twice.
We’ll find out shortly…
Yeah, I think there have been some OTLs.

One. Shea Weber is a star. It was an incredibly well placed shot. And while Varly wasn’t screened, he did have a lot in front of him to deal with — Weber was the trailing guy.

Stoned ’em in the shootout, and he had a bunch of really great saves (even if he did let in a bad goal)

Thursday’s game should be very interesting. The Thrashers seem to be scoring at will and are doing a great job preventing goals too. Then again, it’s just five games and they haven’t had to play DET, BOS, SJ and the like.
also, i our crappy goalie situation better than their crappy goalie situation.
