Saturday Caps Clips: Predators @ Caps Gameday
Your savory breakfast links:
- Previews of tonight's game featuring the seven-goals-in-seven-games Alex Ovechkin and the seven-goals-in-six-games Nashville Predators from Vogs, NHL.com, Cap Centre and The Tennessean and be sure to check out our SB Nation partner On The Forecheck for pregame coverage from the other side of tonight's match up.
- Nashville's just one-for-twenty on the power play in the early goings. [Puck Daddy]
- As impotent as the Preds' offense has been, the blueline has been no picnic either. [On the Forecheck]
- In case you missed it, with Jose Theodore suffering from back spasms, Braden Holtby has been recalled from South Carolina to back up Semyon Varlamov and Tomas Fleischmann has been placed on Long-Term Injured Reserve, retroactive to the start of the season. [Dump and Chase, Washington Post]
- Dmitri Chesnokov caught up with Evgeni Nabokov after Thursday night's loss to the Caps. [Examiner]
- That's a beauty of a shiner Tom Poti was sporting at practice yesterday, eh? [Caps In Pictures]
- Kind words of prologue for team President Dick Patrick from the majority owner, leading into a nice article on one of hockey's most storied family. [Ted's Take]
- Ron Wilson wants his Leafs to be more like Ovechkin. I smell a
pink slipJack Adams in Crazy Ron's future. [Toronto Sun via KK] - Michal Neuvirth stopped 13 of 15 shots but got little support in a 2-1 loss in his season debut. [Lebanon Daily News]
- In a throwaway line in a larger segment, Washington Post associate editor Eugene Robinson suggests that, since Rush Limbaugh's personal race-related beliefs apparently make him undesirable as an NFL owner, "maybe he can buy a hockey team or something." Nice cheap shot. [MSNBC (video; 4:30 mark)]
- Finally, thanks to Beth and Bill for sending along this picture of their right-to-the-point license plate:

We know the Caps can beat the best of ’em. Now we see if they can beat the middle of ’em (low playoff seeds, likely first round opponent, maybe second round opponent). Should be more interesting than it should be. I really enjoyed the two last year (one on radio, I think, because VS bought the rights and bailed or something).

We’ll see what happens. I suspect red army line is right and that it’s going to be more interesting than anyone wants.

I’m sure Robinson made the dig at the NHL because in his mind it’s a racist sport that won’t allow blacks to play and it let Sarah Palin drop the puck in Philly. Of course, he probably has no idea that NHL fans are more educated and make more money than all the other pro sports except baseball. That would require research.

Robinson is a columnist, one in the editorial section of the paper at that. He’s paid to spout off.
Post hockey coverage is getting better……slowly, but getting better. After football season, Barry Svrgula may be shifted to cover the rest of the Caps regular season with TEB. That would be divine.

I agree. On gamedays now, the Caps are pretty much always on the front of washingtonpost.com. That didn’t happen a couple years ago. Their coverage is getting much better.
Still a lame thing to say, though. My man-crush Jarome Iginla would have a thing or two to say about that.

I find it funny that Limbaugh’s is that McNabb comment is still being blown out of proportion. It was certainly a stupid thing to say, and the reaction he got was entirely predictable.
It was stupid to bring race into the equation, when all he had to say was “McNaab has received a lot more hype than he’s earned” and if you look at the numbers from McNabb’s first several seasons, you wouldn’t be able to argue. QB ratings of 60.1, 77.8, 84.3 and 86 and 79.6 aren’t exactly staggering.

Rush as a Hockey Owner...
Considering where some recent owners and almost-owners have ended up, it could be worse:
Sanjay Kumar: In Federal Prison for 12 years for various securities violations, former part owner of the New York Islanders
Bruce McNall: Nearly 5 years in prison for tax fraud, former owner of the LA Kings
Boots Del Biaggio: 8 years for fraud, almost bought into the Nashville Predators
John Spano: Former part owner of the Dallas Stars, former owner of the Islanders, serving 6 years in prison for fraud.
Bill Dwyer: Mobster who owned the NY Americans in the 1930s, actually also was able to purchase the first Pittsburgh team in the NHL in the 1930s at the same time…
Rush would be a miserable choice as an NHL owner (I’d actually prefer Mr. Ball-Silly) but he wouldn’t be the worst ever….

A team that has only scored 2 goals in the past (4 games, i think i read earlier) after playing such a complete game against SJ sounds like a recipe for failure, if this was the same team as last year….or at least another Toronto game where we stop playing in the third.
Conversely, I hope that the final score of this game is 5-0 and Varly’s glove looks sharp tonight.
