Looks like Theo won’t be able to go. My guess is that they’re bringing Holtby over Neuvirth because Neuvy is just getting into his first game tonight after being out with that injury. What a beginning of the season for Holtby. He started in Hershey, got sent down to South Carolina, then almost right away he’s getting called up to Washington.
Not all that unlike Neuvirth’s path last year.

I think it’s both the lighter cap hit and that Holtby’s been playing (not to mention that whomever is recalled is hopefully not going to actually, y’know, play).

Maybe curiosity killed the cat, but....
I don’t know – I’m left with a strong but sneaking temptation to suggest that BB put Holtby out against Nashville with Varly backing him, just to see what he can do.
Never lie, steal, cheat, or drink. But, if you must lie, lie in the arms of the one you love. If you must steal, steal away from bad company. If you must cheat, cheat death. If you must drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away.
I’d be very surprised. They didn’t give him any time to show what he could do in the preseason, so I doubt they do it when the games count in the standings.
Oh, I’d be surprised if they do it too, although if you’re just going to sit him, you could as easily get Stretch to sign another tryout contract :) I don’t know what the rules on that are, tho.
Doesn’t stop my curiosity from running wild.

I’m sorry, but I’m confused: You have both a “strong but sneaking temptation” to suggest starting Holtby, and you would be “surprised if they do it?” To whom would you make this suggestion? And why would you bother if you’d be surprised if they took you up on it?
Put another way: I’m tempted to suggest it. Does that mean I think they really would or should? No, but that doesn’t stop my brain from wondering what would happen if.
Does that help?

Awesome new vein of posting! Random things my brain is wondering, regardless of how likely they are:
Should the Caps sign Hasek to replace Stretch as their web producer/emergency goalie?
If Matt Bradley is wearing Mark Messier’s helmet, why don’t the Caps complete the circle by bringing in Mess to play on that line? An old guy could handle six minutes a game, right?

Would Zoidberg be a great goaltender if you convinced him the pucks are edible? Are pucks edible for Zoidberg?

No, he’s not eligible because he’s played professionally.
Damn! You got me.
Belatedly and in the spirit of David’s reply to my query, I’ll address the Braden Holtby question: No he should not start for the Capitals on Saturday. Any suggestion that he should start in the NHL this weekend fails to take into account an enormous number of factors, including his experience level and his readiness for NHL action. It’s such a wacky notion that I can’t believe it came up.
I’ll personally send you a Photoshop of a Chippendale with Gabby’s head on it if that makes you happy.

Couldn’t resist.

Could be just precautionary no? Theo can’t practice today, but he may well be able to sit on the bench tomorrow night. Better to have Holtby up and practice and around just in case.
Are there any cap implications for having Holtby here today if he doesn’t dress tomorrow night?

Any chance we see Holtby get some playing time, or is this just a precautionary move for depth? I’ve followed his progress online, but have yet to see him play, so I’m curious to see if they’d give him a start.
by JimCareyFanClub on Oct 16, 2009 12:20 PM EDT reply actions
I guess it depends just how long he’s up, but if it’s not long-term, I think it’s doubtful he’d get a start (barring an injury to Varly).

The Preds have scored only seven goals total this year. Would be fun to beat them with our ECHL goalie.
They are also calling on their farm club and are starting a five-game road trip, with their first game back home against…the Blackhawks.
October’s already a very long month for Nashville.

I was about to say, we shouldn’t be so hasty with ass-kicking assumptions. The Caps have a bit of a problem turning it up to 11 when they’re not playing an A+ opponent.

How frustrating would it be to be a victim of cap management? Neuvirth is certainly better able to play in the NHL right now, what is he thinking when he sees Holtby called up because he makes X less dollars a year.
I think Neuvy’d rather play then sit out another game, at this point. And unless Jose’s out for a while, he wouldn’t get a chance to play, anyway.
by DrinkingPartner on Oct 16, 2009 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, it’s probably only for one game, and for good reason: From @cmasisak22 (both tweets):
Boureadu said the Caps want Neuvirth to play for Hershey (he makes his debut this weekend) so Holtby made more sense in the short-term.
Jose Theodore and Boyd Gordon are likely out tomorrow, so says Bruce Boudreau. Both should be ready by Thursday, though.
In other words, they’d rather call up Holtby to sit on the bench than spoil Neuvirth’s debut in Hershey for just one game. Makes sense.

Varlamov, Neuvirth, and Holtby all did well at the AHL level. Aside from experience, Holtby wouldn’t scare the ever-loving piss out of me, no.
by DrinkingPartner on Oct 16, 2009 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Given how both Neuvirth and Varlamov did in their debuts, I wouldn’t worry about one game. I had been thinking earlier today that I wouldn’t be surprised if Theo was healthy enough to sit on the bench Saturday, but I guess it’s not worth taking the risk.
Cripes, I spend the day away from the computer and all hell breaks loose (haven’t even glanced at the earlier threads yet).
Terror???
Well, it’d be a bit scary, but the opponent is Nashville… terror would have been Varly getting hurt last night in the second period.
Well, Brett was in the building… :)

Yes, this – at least this very specific move – is not a cap management issue.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I think the team would rather call up Bacashua than Neuvirth for a very short back-up stint. But if you call up Cash, Holtby still has to move (since Hershey needs a backup too). It’s just simpler to call Holtby all the way up to the NHL. And it gives him some Irbe time.

If you call up Cash, you have to first sign him to a contract – he’s an an AHL deal right now.

Was Holtby already on the 50 man?
Oh, I actually remember voting for him in our summer series. So I guess the answer is yes.

Just because the organization is not stating that Holtby was recalled due to the cap issue, doesn’t mean it isn’t true.
I haven’t done the daily cap math, but based on some simple math based on the numbers from the start of the season, I do not think Neuvirth fits under the cap right now with no other changes (other than counting Fleischmann on LTIR and the bonus cushion space from Backstrom’s contract.)
FWIW, I think it was the right move to have Neuvirth stay with the Bears and start tonight, but if the cap room was there, I think they could have swapped out Neuvirth and Holtby for Saturday.
I think that even if they had all the cap room in the world, they were recalling the guy who’s been playing (and well) at the AHL level rather than the guy who had yet to make a start, who would have missed that first start to sit on the bench in D.C. and who the have a greater need to get on track.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
It is a question not a definite, but the cap situation was a factor in the decision or lack of ability to even have an option to recall Neuvirth in this case. I have no doubt they wanted Neuvirth to start/play last night and he did, but I question whether they would have swapped Neuvirth and Holtby after the game if they had the option of which guy to have backup for Sat’s Caps game. Given his workload last night, I am assuming Neuvirth will start again for the Bears tonight, but if not for the cap situation, it was possible they could have played him the one game and then recalled him if all went well.

What’s with this goalie numbering convention? 60, 40, 70, 30?

There are some companies that will take a custom mold of your face and create a vintage mask. The masks are real and perfect but they just aren’t safe.
I’ve been thinking about getting one of these:

Am I the only one who hates numbers in the 70 range? Really, anything above 60 or so just irks me for some reason.
I hope Carlson doesn’t keep 74 when his time comes. :|
It depends. 91 never bugged me, nor did 77, 73, 81, 85, 82, 92, 99, 96+, really. But on goalies, stick to 1, or 29-41 please. It took me a LONG time to get used to Theo’s 60.

Via Caps Insider
In order to make room under the salary cap ceiling for Holtby, the Caps placed Tomas Fleischmann (blood clot in his leg) on LTI, retroactive to the start of the season. That means Fleischmann must miss at least three more games, but that was probably going to happen anyway.

Me, too, but I think it’s more a matter of that they really didn’t want to use LTIR to go over the cap. Everything they’ve done to this point was to stay under the cap, not squeeze an extra dollar over it. They’re stuck now because it’s a goalie they need, they can’t shuffle a skater out of position.
Although I might like seeing that experiment. (Not.)
