Looks like Theo won’t be able to go. My guess is that they’re bringing Holtby over Neuvirth because Neuvy is just getting into his first game tonight after being out with that injury. What a beginning of the season for Holtby. He started in Hershey, got sent down to South Carolina, then almost right away he’s getting called up to Washington.

Not all that unlike Neuvirth’s path last year.

I think Holtby’s cap hit being less is the biggest consideration here.

I think it’s both the lighter cap hit and that Holtby’s been playing (not to mention that whomever is recalled is hopefully not going to actually, y’know, play).

Maybe curiosity killed the cat, but....

I don’t know – I’m left with a strong but sneaking temptation to suggest that BB put Holtby out against Nashville with Varly backing him, just to see what he can do.

Never lie, steal, cheat, or drink. But, if you must lie, lie in the arms of the one you love. If you must steal, steal away from bad company. If you must cheat, cheat death. If you must drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away.

by gotsparkly on Oct 16, 2009 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d be very surprised. They didn’t give him any time to show what he could do in the preseason, so I doubt they do it when the games count in the standings.

by David Getz on Oct 16, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, I’d be surprised if they do it too, although if you’re just going to sit him, you could as easily get Stretch to sign another tryout contract :) I don’t know what the rules on that are, tho.

Doesn’t stop my curiosity from running wild.

Never lie, steal, cheat, or drink. But, if you must lie, lie in the arms of the one you love. If you must steal, steal away from bad company. If you must cheat, cheat death. If you must drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away.

I’m sorry, but I’m confused: You have both a “strong but sneaking temptation” to suggest starting Holtby, and you would be “surprised if they do it?” To whom would you make this suggestion? And why would you bother if you’d be surprised if they took you up on it?

by TylerG on Oct 16, 2009 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Put another way: I’m tempted to suggest it. Does that mean I think they really would or should? No, but that doesn’t stop my brain from wondering what would happen if.

Does that help?

Never lie, steal, cheat, or drink. But, if you must lie, lie in the arms of the one you love. If you must steal, steal away from bad company. If you must cheat, cheat death. If you must drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away.

How frustrating would it be to be a victim of cap management? Neuvirth is certainly better able to play in the NHL right now, what is he thinking when he sees Holtby called up because he makes X less dollars a year.

by Sct112 on Oct 16, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Neuvy’d rather play then sit out another game, at this point. And unless Jose’s out for a while, he wouldn’t get a chance to play, anyway.

by DrinkingPartner on Oct 16, 2009 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, it’s probably only for one game, and for good reason: From @cmasisak22 (both tweets):

Boureadu said the Caps want Neuvirth to play for Hershey (he makes his debut this weekend) so Holtby made more sense in the short-term.
Jose Theodore and Boyd Gordon are likely out tomorrow, so says Bruce Boudreau. Both should be ready by Thursday, though.

In other words, they’d rather call up Holtby to sit on the bench than spoil Neuvirth’s debut in Hershey for just one game. Makes sense.

Never lie, steal, cheat, or drink. But, if you must lie, lie in the arms of the one you love. If you must steal, steal away from bad company. If you must cheat, cheat death. If you must drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away.

Varlamov, Neuvirth, and Holtby all did well at the AHL level. Aside from experience, Holtby wouldn’t scare the ever-loving piss out of me, no.

by DrinkingPartner on Oct 16, 2009 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Definitely. It’s early in the season so I have no fear either way. However, if Holtby comes out deep in the playoffs, my pants are wet as hell.

by bigmac1124 on Oct 16, 2009 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Given how both Neuvirth and Varlamov did in their debuts, I wouldn’t worry about one game. I had been thinking earlier today that I wouldn’t be surprised if Theo was healthy enough to sit on the bench Saturday, but I guess it’s not worth taking the risk.

Cripes, I spend the day away from the computer and all hell breaks loose (haven’t even glanced at the earlier threads yet).

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Oct 16, 2009 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the team would rather call up Bacashua than Neuvirth for a very short back-up stint. But if you call up Cash, Holtby still has to move (since Hershey needs a backup too). It’s just simpler to call Holtby all the way up to the NHL. And it gives him some Irbe time.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Oct 16, 2009 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Just because the organization is not stating that Holtby was recalled due to the cap issue, doesn’t mean it isn’t true.

I haven’t done the daily cap math, but based on some simple math based on the numbers from the start of the season, I do not think Neuvirth fits under the cap right now with no other changes (other than counting Fleischmann on LTIR and the bonus cushion space from Backstrom’s contract.)

FWIW, I think it was the right move to have Neuvirth stay with the Bears and start tonight, but if the cap room was there, I think they could have swapped out Neuvirth and Holtby for Saturday.

by sk84fun_dc on Oct 16, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that even if they had all the cap room in the world, they were recalling the guy who’s been playing (and well) at the AHL level rather than the guy who had yet to make a start, who would have missed that first start to sit on the bench in D.C. and who the have a greater need to get on track.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Oct 17, 2009 8:17 AM EDT up reply actions

It is a question not a definite, but the cap situation was a factor in the decision or lack of ability to even have an option to recall Neuvirth in this case. I have no doubt they wanted Neuvirth to start/play last night and he did, but I question whether they would have swapped Neuvirth and Holtby after the game if they had the option of which guy to have backup for Sat’s Caps game. Given his workload last night, I am assuming Neuvirth will start again for the Bears tonight, but if not for the cap situation, it was possible they could have played him the one game and then recalled him if all went well.

That’s low anyway. 78 would be your most cost-efficient number.

I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.

“82 degrees, that’s my shit.”

Rec if you get the reference.

Maybe play with an edge, be a little more physical -- maybe be more of a prick out there.

No, for heating it is now. For A/C, though, 78 is money.

You’re truly superstitious. We could almost say that 66 is the devil’s own number.

Real men set it to 8… Kelvin.

Sorry, I live in Santa Monica

What is this “heat” and “A/C” you people speak of?

In other news, I think all defensemen, by law, should have single digit numbers.

That is all.

Brian Burke does too. He had a rule on it… at least until Phil Kessel arrived.

by TylerG on Oct 16, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Brian Burke started that, if I recall correctly, when he took over the Senators in the 90s, back when every other player on that team had a crazy weird number.

Via Caps Insider
In order to make room under the salary cap ceiling for Holtby, the Caps placed Tomas Fleischmann (blood clot in his leg) on LTI, retroactive to the start of the season. That means Fleischmann must miss at least three more games, but that was probably going to happen anyway.

The Caps are that tight on the cap???

Me, too, but I think it’s more a matter of that they really didn’t want to use LTIR to go over the cap. Everything they’ve done to this point was to stay under the cap, not squeeze an extra dollar over it. They’re stuck now because it’s a goalie they need, they can’t shuffle a skater out of position.

Although I might like seeing that experiment. (Not.)

Quentin Laing in goal would probably be a better goalscorer, but maybe not as good at blocking shots.

why wasnt he on IR to begin with??

by ns on Oct 16, 2009 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Because they thought he could get back before LTIR could kick in. He hasn’t been able to.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
