Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Oct 15, 2009 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, Nylander isn’t that versatile of a player, really – he wasn’t that effective at 3C or 4C last year and he REALLY wasn’t effective on a wing. My guess is the only way Nyls gets in is if Backstrom or BMo go down.

Never lie, steal, cheat, or drink. But, if you must lie, lie in the arms of the one you love. If you must steal, steal away from bad company. If you must cheat, cheat death. If you must drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away.

by gotsparkly on Oct 15, 2009 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions

You do have to wonder, though, if the team wouldn’t be better with Nylander at 2C and B-Mo at 3C.

Well, I don’t wonder. We saw that last year, and it wasn’t pretty. I’d rather have Aucoin playing than Nylander. But some people might wonder that.

by Rob Parker on Oct 15, 2009 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s as much about the cap hit, though, when you’re talking about 8 minutes per night. I mean, the cap-strapped Caps (say that five times fast) would rather eat the Kane/Sloan/Aucoin cap hit – which right now would be banked for later – than skate Nyls for ten shifts per night on the fourth line. I don’t see Nyls getting in at any point – I think they’d rather skate BMo/Backy and Aucoin (or Laich) as their top two C’s if something happened to one of the top two.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Oct 15, 2009 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions

How much of that is that the Caps are on a four-game skid and can’t chance having a player who’s ineffective?

Never lie, steal, cheat, or drink. But, if you must lie, lie in the arms of the one you love. If you must steal, steal away from bad company. If you must cheat, cheat death. If you must drink, drink in the moments that take your breath away.

by gotsparkly on Oct 15, 2009 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Considering they played Kane and Sloan I don’t think they mind having an ineffective player. I think it all comes down to “Nyls will not wear a Caps jersey this year barring catastrophic circumstances.”

If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.

by Rob Parker on Oct 15, 2009 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Would prefer to see Laich on a wing; I’d like to see him at 3LW. This gives that third line a little bit more scoring.

i love that "laichoin"

but clark needs a chance to play. if continues to play like he has so far, then i’d start sitting him. plus i dont really see how nylander could be THAT much worse than aucoin.

by twistedlogic on Oct 15, 2009 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t pull Nylander in there, maybe pull up another bear for the wing. I haven’t been paying much attention, but I’m sure a guy on the cusp could get a chance over Clark. They might play with the same fire and have the same missteps, but there’s more upside in a young player improving rather than an old guy on the decline.

by snowburnt on Oct 15, 2009 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Clark’s looked reasonably good to me so far. He’s moving his feet and getting into pretty good position on offense — he just hasn’t been able to finish. I’m willing to give him a little longer to get his “tracking radar” calibrated.

Nylander isn't a 3rd/4th line guy

Aucoin can be. Nylander has skills, but they are not suited for the 3rd/4th line grind. They are suited for the 1st and 2nd line, with a team that has a different system.

I know that he didn’t know exactly what he had in Backstrom, but that’s still no reason to give a guy in his mid-thirties a 4 year deal with an NMC. It was a godawful contract and the Caps (and us, the fans) are paying the price.

Don’t know about here, but there were comments in the papers that the drop to 3 million indicated that Nyls would be “tradeable” for the final year. Nobody thought it would blow up in year 2 though.

The last year’s also without the no-movement clause, so the team could get rid of his cap hit if they desired.

Ahhh, the halcyon days of Matt Pettinger, Kris Beech, and Jiri Novotny and Ben Clymer…how quickly we forget.

I was jazzed about the Nylander signing, no doubt. He was a legit playmaker for the first line, who was going to tutor Backstrom, dish to Ovechkin, and up the offensive talent level by a couple of notches all by himself.

I expected him to make a nice comeback last year, too. His ineffectiveness caught me totally by surprise.

We can’t count Jiri Novotny. I hated everything about him. How bad he was, who we traded for him…

by hockeyman33 on Oct 15, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not going to lie and say i wasn’t happy when they got him. It was a little pricey but nothing I couldn’t live with. What bothered me was the NMC. For a guy his age, it was just dumb on McPhee’s part to give him that. As we now know, it probably wasn’t necessary since Nylander’s wife was never going to OK a move to Edmonton. I think we can all say that it’ll be a cold day in hell before he hands out another NMC to a player of Nyls ability and age.

by b.orr4 on Oct 15, 2009 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn’t foresee Boudreau’s system. However, at no time, in ANY sport is it wise to give an expensive long-term contract with a no-movement clause to a player in his mid-30s. It’s a ridiculously bad idea, ESPECIALLY for a team constructed around a core of younger players that is likely a few years away from contention. It’s a virtual lock to be an albatross.

I didn’t like the contract then, and I sure as hell still don’t like it now. It was a move made out of mistaken desperation. There is a reason that Nylander has bounced around as much as he has and, as the Khabibulin and Penner contracts have demonstrated, if you’re bidding against the Oilers for a free agent, chances are you’re barking up the wrong tree.

Whether or not Gordo’s got a bad back (I’m sure he does, to an extent), with the penalties he’s taken, I don’t think anyone would disagree that he’s earned night off. Add to that the fact that they wouldn’t have recalled Aucoin if they didn’t plan to use him, and I agree that #20 getting a sweater tonight’s a pretty good bet.

A night off will do Boyd’s head more benefit than his back. When you consider that he took 8 minors all of last season and he’s got four in just six games this season, something’s not right. A game or two watching from the press box should help.

No.

Wouldn’t they have to keep him here for 30 days? We’d still have the same cap problem that put him on waivers in the first place.

There is a grace period. We’d have to put him on the NHL roster immediately (but nothing has changed to create the cap space required, as far as I know) but within like 2 weeks you can send him down without him having to pass waivers. That’s how we got Kronwall to HER last year.

How is life with a greyhound? The one’s I’ve met all seem terribly, terribly mellow.

Maybe play with an edge, be a little more physical -- maybe be more of a prick out there.

by jordanDC on Oct 15, 2009 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

He looks stressed in that picture, eh?

Yeah, he’s really good at holding down beds. If you want a low maintenance dog, greyhound is the way to go. People think they’re high energy, but the truth is they’re sprinters, not stayers. They sleep 20 hours a day, and laze for 4. Our guy needs two half-hour walks a day, and that’s all the exercise he needs.

And yeah, most of them are just sweet and mellow. You can get some separation anxiety (dogs on the track are never alone, so it’s hard on them when you leave them at home the first time) and some resource guarding, but I don’t know any aggressive greyhounds.

Best thing is that everyone who adopts a greyhound saves a life. It’s that simple. There are more retired hounds than there are homes. And I won’t go into what their other alternatives are. It just feels good to know how we turned his life around, even if he’s not really aware of it.

Well, Aucoin signed a two-year deal for the League minimum per year (which was $475k then $500k) and Kane just signed a one-year deal for the League minimum ($500k). So they’ve got the same NHL salary, but with the hit averaged over the life of the deal, there you go.

Dude, to all the people that admire how hard AO has worked to get his English competent: Kopitar puts AO to shame. The guy speaks perfect English. You know he was like “I’m going to play in the NHL, and to do that I need to speak English” from the time he was 12 or something. It’s not even like he had a lengthy apprenticeship in America where he could pick up the language slowly (like Kugryshev, for example). His first year in America was his rookie year, and he even spoke English well then. I’m just so impressed with that guy.

I’d guess that the Slovene language is more similar to English than Cyrillic is, though. Not sure though. It just seems that folks like Juice, Flash, and other Slovaks speak far superior English than any of the younger Russians.

Kopitar also went to play in Sweden at age 16, so he was probably forced to learn English there.

by Cluster on Oct 15, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I find that translating from Cyrillic to Roman as far as reading things is concerned gets really weird from time to time, though I’m getting a bit better at looking at a word written in Cyrillic and seeing what it means, even if I can’t pronounce it for coffee.

I’ve also found that I can look at Swedish and understand what I’m seeing. I can’t do that with Finnish at ALL. (Finnish needs to lose some of the double letters – they have some weird words over there, and I put that language on the level of Welsh Gaelic for “say-whaaa?”

I wonder if they teach English in Slovak schools more than they do in Russian schools…?

Incredibly expensive but its spectacular. The majority of my time was spent in Stockholm and I would go back at the drop of a hat.

Just about everyone that I ran into spoke better English than most Americans. I’m sure trying is appreciated but I had more than a few efforts that quickly ran right to English. Honestly I can’t blame them. If they wanted to speak with someone that had the vacabularly of a 2 year old, they would just speak to a 2 year old.

When I traveled to Hungary and Slovakia, I found out that everybody learns English in school b/c nobody, in the other European countries, is going to learn Hungarian or Slovakian. They’re two smaller countries in the bigger European Union. They have to adapt in order to communicate.

I think Russia’s mentality in relation to the other EU countries is different, and their approach to learning languages reflects that.

I studied in Spain and basically everywhere I went off the Iberian peninsula spoke English. The only other place I had even the slightest problem was Prague and I think they just pretended to not speak English because they didn’t want to deal with a group of travelling Americans.

Italy was the same way, except in very rural communities. Everyone spoke English and it was almost impossible to convince them that I wanted to speak Italian. Luckily for me, my little town had about 3 English speakers and I had to learn Italian.

In fairness

Kopitar played in Sweden prior to coming to the States, and from what I understand, English is the lingua franca over there for non-Swedes, so he’s got a couple of years on Ovie.

As I pointed out above, he started learning English before he left Slovenia. Also, you look at a guy like Nikita Filatov who also started learning English way before he was in the NHL because he knew what he wanted and what he would need to get there. AO has obviously done a great job catching up, but the foresight those other guys had to learn English before they had to is a sign of maturity, IMO.

Costliest victory of the year in LA, considering Green’s shoulder.

Green got hurt in ANA. By Pronger… of course.

Geographically speak, Anaheim is pretty much LA.

Is Baltimore DC?

Anaheim is most definitely not LA…

Au contraire, I’m sure lots of people think Baltimore is a DC suburb (census tract is dc/balt). And California is a different world. Anything within 60 miles is probably greater LA. Los Angeles Angels, anyone?

Census tracts are portions of counties – DC and Baltimore are not the same one.

DC and Baltimore used to be considered one metropolitan statistical area if I recall correctly – I know for a fact they’re considered separate today.

Yep. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, who play in Angel Stadium of Anaheim (yes, that’s their full name) do nothing to make people think of Anaheim as anything more than greater LA.

C’mon, dude, they’re going to the playoffs. That is a slam dunk.

They’ve come out of the gate a little shaky and they’ve played good teams (btw, look at what the Rags have been doing, and that loss doesn’t look so bad), which has produced predictable results.

But this team is going to the playoffs, without a doubt.

I dunno, the Rags loss was the only one I’d term “bad” effort-wise.

Right but I think FD is saying that the Rags are much better than last year. It’s not exactly an embarrassment to lose to them.

More’s the pity, yes.

It’s been weird. Ever since the Toronto game, every team I have watched and rooted for in any sport has lost. Without fail. I’ll watch a West Coast hockey game on Center Ice because I’m bored and the team I’m pulling for will lose. It sucks and I’d like for it to stop now, much though I have a feeling the suckage will not stop tonight.

Preee-cisely.

The Rags are 6-1-0, having lost to Pitt on the road in the opener. They’ve beaten NJD, Caps, LAK and ANA, none of whom are bad teams. They’ve also beaten Toronto and Ottawa, who are bad, but they annihilated (sp?) those two.

Until Gabby goes down, the Rags are pretty good.

Actually, until Lavar Arrington comes on, it’s a fine station and I like everyone on it. Once Lavar’s on, I usually switch to 100.3. I only ever listen to the radio in the car, and I’m not in the car enough to warrant paying for radio.

I like the junks. Mike Wise is the most frustrating person I’ve ever heard on radio because he takes the smug dick act farther than even I can tolerate. Whatever else is on there is a wasteland.

If you’re shackled to a computer all day like me, get the 7 day trial every week. All you have to do is put in a phony-baloney email address. I’ve been doing it for months.

Well, if they ever choose to audit IP addresses, you’ll probably be out of luck, but I do agree that Home Ice on XM is pretty nice.

I have Sirius in my car, and listen to Home ice quite a bit on my rides to and from work.

Yeah, but they’re a bunch of dummies, so all you have to do is use mailinator every week.

I pay for XM in my car, but a while ago they stopped offering the online service for free to subscribers. So I figured out a way to get it free (and it’s not exactly difficult).

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
