Woo-hoo. Heading to the game in a little while. Bad ice tonight? Blame it on Metro track maintenance!

How’s about a nice, tidy 3-1 victory tonight?! Disciplined play, respomsible defense, and two points from Knuble.

Whoa – is this graphic-y/stat-y stuff from the WaPo new?

yeah. Lindsay’s been cracking the whip on “enhancing” coverage. Have you seen the coffee cup graced with Ovie’s image for morning rink headlines? (although if she manages to drag Svrgula from the black hole that is the Redskins beat, I’ll be forever grateful)
That I have seen. Kind of a rip off of OFB’s “Morning Cup” no?

Tweet from Tarik:
The starting lineup has Brendan Morrison centering Brooks Laich and Alexander Semin. So maybe the Alexes have been split up.
Interesting comment from Walsh:
…“we’re not expecting (revenues) to be down. Based on prelim projections, we’re going to be flat to up a little bit”.
Sounds like maybe an uptick in the cap next year.

Hey, Knuble had to step into Semin’s spot in the lineup, right?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Nice. I actually wasn’t as sold on that PIM as Locker was. I thought Knuble had his shoulder in there and the stick was more incidental but that’s totally going to be called with the current rules.

I didn’t see what started it, but sometimes you’ve gotta skate away from a fight when you’re up 2-0.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
He didn’t get an instigator, and I’d trade 5 minutes of Clark on the ice for a little show of leadership any day.
Depends what Clarkson did that precipitated the fight, IMO.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
Well, that’s the question, and further to it, I read this earlier today:
When Bryan Murray coached in Ottawa, he had a "two-goal rule" when it came to fighting. If the Senators were up two, no one was allowed to go. He didn’t want to lose momentum. After Max Talbot’s fight with Daniel Carcillo turned a 3-0 Philly lead into a series clinching loss last year, you figure everyone would learn the lesson. But noooooooooo. Last Tuesday, Anaheim led Minnesota 3-0 when John Scott challenged George Parros. Parros accepted, and was kayoed. Andrew Brunette won it in OT for the Wild.
Those who understand: John Erskine and Darcy Hordichuk. Both skated away from fights last week when their teams were in control.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Very true. Fights are huge in momentum shifting.

I’m in full support of this depending on situation. If a guy is doing something dirty, like a late hit or an elbow, I’m for the fight, because it shows you’re not going to take the garbage, and it can lead to a momentum swing on it’s own.
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.
There’s also something to be said for Clark taking this opportunity to show that he’s willing to fight given all the questions about who on the team could fill that role.
by sixsevenfiftysix on Oct 12, 2009 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions
You know, a lot of people disagree (I remember Pensburgh saying this) that most teams pick their best player who’s also a leader to be their Captain, but in Washington we pick our best leader who’s also a good player. I like our system better. Lead by example, Clarky.
I'm so sick and tired of the refs explaining the calls like this is the NFL.
This. Clarkson wasn’t going to stop at Clark; he was out there to start something, and he was out there to take liberties. Clark answered the bell so someone else didn’t have to, and he showed that they weren’t going to take it. AND, as the icing on the cake, he made the fight extra lame so there was absolutely no momentum coming out of it whatsoever.
So let him take a bad penalty.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Clark, who went to Clarkson, fighting Clarkson?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I dunno…that was just uncomfortable to watch….who would you say is the best fighter on the team now? I cant really see any of them being that great at it.

There was some game the Caps played in in the last few years where the first goalie was pulled, then the second, to be replaced by the first. Because the Caps were awesome. Don’t remember who it was against though.
Well, that was the scenario in the Caps comeback over NY last season, Theo pulled, Brent gets nicked, Theo back in, Caps rally to win 5-4

And why would you show Nylander’s shootout stats when he’s not even playing? Great job MSG.

Couldn’t agree more. These past ones are on the rest of the team.

I, for one, cannot wait to see what a 20 minute effort gets us against SJS. I bet it’s awesome…

I give them 45 seconds for Brashear’s excellent fight. And Flash actually had a pretty good game.
Everyone else was terrible.

I hope Theo goes apeshit on the team in the locker room.

Does he really want to open it up to that? How long until the tables will be turned and the team should be going ape shit on Theo?

Well, someone’s got to speak up. They can’t expect to play like they have night in and night out and expect results.

He can’t do much more. He is already sending a bunch of mesagews to the team. Locker said BB talked to Sasha and Green before the game about the penalties.
Sorry to say, but
If he can’t do more than this it’s time for him to go.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
I don’t think you fire a coach for 4 losses, two in OT. Get at least 10-15 games in and if he is still crappin it up then its time. And he just recorded all those commercials too.
I’m not saying he should be fired. I’m just saying if he’s done all he can do then he’s done. He better have more tricks or else he’ll have to go. And it’s not just 4 games, this goes back to last season as well. The team does not play with intensity, focus, and discipline for 60 minutes, and they basically haven’t since we lost to PHI in the playoffs.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
I don’t know if its the coach or this batch of players, but, yeah, they just don’t try hard enough most the time. They’re gonna need that 60 minutes a game in the playoffs if they want to win anything.

He looked pretty good. I still saw some glaring errors on Poti’s part, although he had some good plays.

He looked okay, but he NEEDS to hustle more. I saw plenty of times when he got beat in 1 on 1 dump-ins, etc.

Yes

dude what’s the purpose of always doing that? it’s a contract year, he’s done in the past, maybe Theo will play at this level all season? He, after all, HAS done it before!
Bad games happen to every goalie. I think F&B was saying Theo should pick his spots
Atta dinnin stick a who!
by Gould Old Days on Oct 12, 2009 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions
ah i see….well it’s a moot point as I don’t think Theo’s the screamer type. that being said, i just hope he keeps this streak up, as opposed to his post-lockout inconsistent self
why does Vary “have to to get in a game soon too”? After all, we need a true number 1, and there’s no reason why Theo can’t do that, IF he keeps up this level. Why risk taking him out of a groove, especially since there’s no back to back games coming, for the sake of Varly “needing” to get in a game….
Call me old-fashioned. Call me a capitalist-pig-dog. But I believe in “earn your spot.” Theo most definitely has earned a claim to the blue ice for this team. Varlamov will get more starts but I don’t think BB “has to get him back in a game.”
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
I think Varly will get the NSH game, partially cause BB said he was gonna be switching em out. Gives Theo a rest, Varly a chance, and keeps Theo knowing he hasnt won it yet. Keepin both of them on the top of their games.
by hockeyman33 on Oct 12, 2009 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions
I’m saying screamer type or not, Theo has given away plenty of games with soft goals. If he starts ranting because the skaters let him down tonight, how long until someone says “cough Gaborik 5 hole cough” and then you just have a divided locker room. Everyone knows they let him down, he doesn’t need to be the one to say it.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
i agree with that explanation. I just think that Theo can indeed have an extended run of success this year, oh yea and its a contract year so…………………..
I’m not really sold on the contract year thing for Theo. Even his “great” contract years were only mildly above average; they just look awesome because the years before them were awful. I don’t think we’re going to get a “contract year savior” from him.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
Well it’s not denying that taking the Hart/Vezina year away from him, I think we would all be VERY happy with any of his season from: 2000 (2.50 gaa, .909 sv%); 2003 (2.27 gaa, .919 sv ); 2007 (2.44 gaa, .910 sv) and even 99-2000 as #2 he had a 2.10 gaa and .917 sv %. So all that to say that Theo can get the job done, and I don’t think we NEED to play Varly
2007 is the only one I think is even relevant anymore, and if anyone remembers that year he was atrocious for the first half and on fire for the second half. It wasn’t a full year of solid hockey, and like I said .910 is only mildly above average anyway.
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
I feel bad for Theo. He did pretty much everything he could. I mean, those were some damn fine saves.
No more Ovechkin in the shootout.
"And next year it will be ours."
Boudreau at post game presser: “It will be good to eventually win a game again.”
Understatement of the season so far.
and he’s getting extremely pissed. I’ll bet he skates their asses’ off tommorow, even if they do play the Sharks Thurs.

Boy, how toxic is that bridge between player and coach when Nylander’s gear isn’t even hanging up?

Damn, really? He’s not even in the locker room anymore?

There was a quick 30 seconds with Clark, and you could see the background. His tag is up (next to Backstrom’s), and one of the equipment guys was hanging up pads, etc. in that space, but Nyls’ looked very empty.
