Monday Caps Clips: Devils @ Caps Gameday
Your savory breakfast links:
- Previews of tonight's game from Vogs, NHL.com and Peerless, and be sure to check out our SB Nation partner In Lou We Trust for pregame coverage from the other side of tonight's match up.
- Just wondering - if the Caps "expect to sell out every game" and "the probability of 41 sold-out games at Verizon Center this season," why are there so many tickets still available (in rather large blocks) via Ticketmaster for tonight's game and future games? Is Susan O'Malley back working for the Caps?
- Sid on Ovie: "He's a great player. Just because he has not won a Stanley Cup doesn't mean anything." That's like when rich people tell you that money isn't everything. [Toronto Sun]
- Speaking of those two players, have they already peaked? Seriously? [The Hockey News]
- Semyon Varlamov is far from the only goalie off to a rough start. Of course, these other names have long enough resumes that no one's worried. [Peerless]
- Mike Knuble's a good dude. [Grand Rapids Press]
- Because we aim to bring you comprehensive coverage, here's a link to Pierre LeBrun adding nothing to the "Michael Nylander-to-Russia" talk. [ESPN]
- Some great ideas for the Caps marketing folks... if only they hadn't already sold out every game. Ahem. [Peerless]
- Down in Hershey, Michal Neuvirth still isn't ready to go and Anton Gustafsson can't get a game. [The Patriot-News]
- On this date back in 1996, Dale Hunter became the first player in NHL history to hit the 300 goal/3,000 penalty minute mark for his career, a club in which he's still the only member (as he is in this one).
- Finally, happy 44th birthday to Todd Krygier and happy 24th to Mike Green. How 'bout you give all of us a present, GreenLife52?

i’ve been checking in on the “in lou we trust” guys for a while now. their caps game preview, including a look at how the devils plan to approach the SOB line, is an interesting read.
sorry to throw in a tangent so quickly after the links go up, but fantasy hockey ATOI questions for the fantasy hockey veterans out there:
1) “the disgrunted goats” and “don’t toews me sombrero” played a 6-4 game last week, where SG scored the win in ATOI despite an exact 20:35 tie. is there a common tiebreaker in this situation? (or for other tie scores?)
2) in general, the ATOI stat is confusing me. does the team ATOI sum all games for all players, and then divide by total ice time? in other words, if one player has 3 games in a week and another player has 2 games in a week, does the player with 3 games have his ATOI weighted more heavily? or is each player’s ATOI factored equally for the week, regardless of the number of games played?
i’m worried about sean avery’s current 4th-line status, and i’m wondering if he’s even worth playing at this point if it means a sure loss in the ATOI category.
ATOI a stat for fantasy hockey? That makes as much sense as PIMs.
I remember back in the day when I cheered loudly for Paul Coffey’s minor-major-misconduct-game misconduct. But I still didn’t like it.
Russian Machine Never Breaks
I find ATOI to be a pretty good proxy for quality. It ain’t perfect, but it’s better than some other measures. The best players get put out there the most.

My thinking was that ATOI is weighted by the number of games played, not evenly among all players. It makes way more sense to me that way, but I could be wrong.
And I thought at first that ATOI was a weird stat to have, but I do like that it gives some value to guys who are great players but don’t do the things that show up on the stat sheet (like shutdown defensemen).

It’s gotta be based on total games. Isn’t that what the word “average” means?
If you're after gettin' the honey, then you don't go killin' all them bees.
It seems to me to be (total time played by your players) / (total number of games played by your players). It’s not (sum of ATOI numbers for each of your players) / (number of players) — that’d be dumb.

Good thing Braden Holtby’s been solid so far. Yeah, they lost last night, but I was not impressed with Cash the one time I watched him play.
For this game, I’d really prefer to switch Knuble and Semin, but that’s just my opinion.
Sadly, I will not be at the game tonight – something came up in the last week and I’m going to have to sit this one out. Come on boys, bring down the house for us.

Not true. I am always looking for the snark. Problem on this one is that it is expected that people will be down on Theo, even though he doesn’t deserve it at the moment.
Regarding the sellouts — on the way to the game on Thursday, I made a crack that if they’re only a few hundred tickets shy (which was the vibe I was getting), Ted (and/or his partners) should just fork out the money and buy them up. It wouldn’t be that much for him, and the PR from 41 sellouts would be worth it. I say that’s what happened.
Isn’t it ironic that Ted is always telling everyone to cool it when they talk about how great the Caps are and then he’s out there all summer bragging about how the team will sell out every game when that clearly isn’t going to be the case. There was no way the Rangers game was sold out. Huge blocks of seats were empty, yet there it was in the boxscore as a sellout. It seems pretty obvious that regardless of whether all the tickets are gone, you’re never going to see the Caps admit that any game is less than a sellout this season because it would be too big of a PR hit to say otherwise. I hate to say it, but it’s very Snyderish the way they’ve handled this sellout issue. God, I feel dirty for just putting Danny boy and the Caps in the same sentence.
Remember that the 200’s are pretty much always going to look sparse. I agree that the Rangers game looked a little light on attendance. It did seem to pick up along the way, and we were late getting there due to traffic (grrrr!).
Money is what makes the statistics, and what matters is that the tickets were sold, not that the bums were actually in the seats.
Yeah, I know the 200s don’t count since they’re owned by WS&E and not the Caps. And no doubt paid attendance is what counts not actual fannies in the seats. Still, when they’re selling tickets the morning of the game, as JP noted, and there are huge blocks of seats unoccupied during the entire game, that tells me something fishy is going on. It really doesn’t matter much to me, but I do find it funny that the guy who’s always lecturing us on prematurely raising expectations is doing it himself.
I would like to volunteer to be a seat-filler for the 200 level. It’s a tough job, but I’m willing to make the sacrifice in order to keep up appearances at the Phone Booth.

at the end of the 2005-2006 season, they were so desperate to get butts in seats there was an offer for lower bowl center seats for $35! Even my poor grad student self could afford that.
Nothing can beat the O’s promotion for $1 tickets. That’s a ticket to a major league (in theory, anyway) ball game for the price of a McChicken.

Yep – I was there too and those seats look really empty – not 2006 empty but more like.. mid 2008/09 empty. I’m not a STH, so naturally I missed the home opener, but I imagine it was a huge dropoff. The upper bowl seemed fairly full to me, but the lower levels were lacking in numerous sections. Maybe they should turn the lights off down there too. :P
Its always bothered me that the place doesn’t start filling up until 7:30ish+, and whether that’s just a product of a packed town, busy residents, lack of parking, a crowded slow paced aging metro system, or just a spread out fanbase, I’m not sure.
Would it help if games were delayed until 7:30? I’d like to at least give it a try. I know that if I leave work as early as possible (5) and head straight to the game and experience no metro delays (doesn’t happen often), I’m lucky to catch warm-ups. On the other hand, I’m often not home until 11pm, and I’m not sure many if any want to push that back half an hour.
7:00 starts are brutal for families. If you work in the city, then you have to get back out to the burbs, round up the kids, get back into the city…pain in the ass. And god forbid there be a metro malfunction.
When I lived at the end of the red line but worked downtown, I’d be one of those people showing up to games in work clothes with a Caps jersey thrown over top. There was just no way to be sure that I could get home and back by a 7 pm start. (life is so much better living in the city! I actually get to go home and eat dinner before games)
You’re lucky. I don’t think I’ve ever gone home, let alone eaten, before a week day game. And I live and work downtown!

I think it’s a little of all of what you named. The Red Line is routinely delayed, and it’s gotten worse since the June accident. I come from Baltimore, and I’m not the only one to do so – if I leave work at 4, run by my apartment long enough to feed my cats and grab my jersey, and head down on the Green Line, I’ll be just in time for warmups. Like you, I’m usually not home until 11 PM and sometimes it’s 11:30.

one of the issues is there are several large blocks of seats owned by ticket brokers. So, the seats are “sold” but they go empty except for weekend and extremely high profile games.
Add in that it seems like half of washington left town after work on Thursday, and you get an empty arena.
Interesting. Isn’t that similar to the big controversy the Redskins had this summer about selling big chunks of tickets to brokers instead of directly to the public?
That was only part of the huge controversy with the skins. The seats at the VC have been owner by the brokers for several years now, so I don’t think the Caps have can kick them out as long as they pay their bills, since current seat holder have first dibs on renewal each year. I don’t think the Caps were letting brokers skip to the front of the ticket line like the Skins were.
Somewhat related, I think I just got the worst Ticketmaster security check ever:

Ovechkin and Crosby Peaking
The article about Sid and Ovechkin peaking is absurd. Crosby had 120 points in his second season, and injuries have hampered his production in the past two. I swear Ovechkin increases his shot totals with each passing game, and a 70 goal season is not out of the question for him. Of course they aren’t going to reach the 140-150 point range, because the NHL just isn’t like that.
Just because they won’t top 150 points doesn’t mean they’ve peaked. One of Crosby’s flaws was his faceoff ability. Now, it has improved every year to the point where he is winning 65% of his faceoffs this season. And his defensive game has improved drastically. Ovechkin’s passing ability was not that great when he came into the league, and it has certainly improved drastically.
Points don’t tell the whole story when you are talking about players who are 22 and 24 years old peaking.
Costello is right. For the “generational” player, chances are he is going to have his best years (statistically) well before his 30th birthday. We said this not long ago…
The thing is, though, Gretzky’s last 50-plus goal scoring year came at age 28. Gordie Howe (second at 201 goals) never had a 50-goal season, but his high mark of 49 was reached at age 24. Brett Hull (741 career goals) had 86 goals at age 26, but never topped 50 after getting 57 at age 29.
And what’s more, the elite of the elite, if they are going to win a Stanley Cup, start doing it sooner rather than later. Crsoby has his Cup. Ovechkin’s window is open, but it won’t be for long.
If you've read this far...seek help.
The major assumption in the article is that you can tell when a generational player peaks by looking at the stats. It’s an assumption I seriously question.
Gretzky’s 92-goal season came in ‘81-’82, at age 21, but they didn’t win the Cup until ‘83-84, and Gretzky himself was part of the reason they couldn’t put it together until then. I’d rather have that later Gretzky, even if it meant his stats weren’t at their absolute peak, because he was a better player.
Michael Jordan set the guards PPG record (37.09) in 86-87, at age 23, but didn’t win it all until 90-91. Again, I’d rather have that more mature Jordan if I had to choose even if the stats weren’t quite so amazaing, because he was a better player.
I think for some players, they are so good they can choose how they’re going to play. It takes a little adversity for them to focus away from the individual glory and to focus more on the team game (or maturity to help them understand where that division is).
We may very well have seen the best stats Ovechkin is ever going to put up. If it means he adjusts his game and becomes one of the best defensive forwards as well as one of the best on offense, that’s what it may take to bring a Cup to DC.

That is exactly the formula Steve Yzerman parlayed into becoming a Stanley Cup winner and an icon in Red Wing and NHL history. I see pieces of that in Ovechkin (he already seems more defensively responsible this year than last), but it is a work in progress.

It’s clear the point there is as much longevity as it is skill. If you use this model, Ovechkin still has several years at that production, and if he drops to goals in the 40s after that, everyone will be disappointed, but it won’t be anything to sneeze at. Probably more of concern is how his body holds up with the punishment he gives every night. He seems unbreakable now, but at some point, he’s going to slow down, however slightly that may be.
Ovi gave an interview this summer in Russia (no, not that interview) in which he was a little more introspective and basically noted that he couldn’t believe it had been five years already since joining the NHL and that time might not wait around for him.
Sorta reminded me of my own first true love, Dan Marino, who scorched the NFL for a hundred million TDs in his sophomore year but lost to Montana and the 49ers in SB XIX. Bad luck and bad defense (ahem) kept the Dolphins out of championship contention for the rest of his career. Later, he was asked about the Super Bowl and he said, “I always thought I’d be back.”
No situation is exactly equal, but it will be good for the Caps to knuckle down and grind out some Ws right about now.
IS PAЯTY NOW
I was a huge Marino fan when I was little. I think the difference was Marino never seemed to have the right players around him to get the job done. He either needed better receivers, a better running back, a better defense, etc. Many years, it was a one man show. Time will tell with Ovie, but I think he has the right pieces around him to get the job done.

I definitely agree with all of your comments.
If Ovechkin dips to 45-50 goal range, but his assists and defensive play improve, did he peak when he was 23?
If Crosby never hits the 130 point mark like everyone expected, but he becomes a dominant two-way center like Steve Yzerman, did he peak at 21?
I guess it doesn’t matter, as long as you bring home Stanley Cups.
We’ll never know about Crosby because he’ll always play with Malkin (for the foreseeable future). Vice versa for Malkin.
Do they benefit from playing with each other, or are they both victims of splitting points, and therefore not reaching full potential?
I wouldn’t really say they benefit or are victims. They are only on the same line late in games where they are down by a goal or two, or when Bylsma feels the Pens need a spark. It’s hard to say what effect having the two of them on the same team has on their point totals. I’d say it’s a wash.
It’s sort of a similar situation with Backstrom. I think Backstrom is awesome, but the reason he is underrated is because he plays with Ovechkin.
Malkin does, due to Sid being a better faceoff guy. Staal has been playing with Malkin more, and they are really meshing….
just a tip for my fellow fantasy nerds out there.
I think we may very well see AO get a 70+ goal season, simply because he was oh-so-close before, but I don’t ever expect to see another 160+ point season out of anyone, again, unless there is a year where every team suffers defensive breakdowns/injuries and goalie equipment shrinks to absurd proportions. The field has gotten too good for those kind of numbers to happen, again, IMO. I don’t think it’s anything on Malkin/Crosby/AO/Backstrom (whom I’d say probably has the best shot of hitting 150 of the group, due to teammates and his own improving scoring ability), it’s everything on the level of competition existant in this NHL as opposed to mid-70s to mid-90s.
by DrinkingPartner on Oct 12, 2009 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions
If Backstrom becomes a better goal-scorer, than Ovechkin has a better chance at 70 goals, because opposing defenses will have to key in on both of them.
On an unrelated note, someday Backstrom, Green, Semin, and Ovechkin could all eat up $30m+ of the salary cap. Who do you get rid of if that number is crippling the team?
Even today, if the Care Bears are playing well, Ovechkin has an excellent chance at 82 (still on pace for such, after all). I think AO will have a better chance at 150+ if Backs starts hitting 30-40 goal years, I don’t necessarily think his goal totals will be affected, though – as in, I don’t believe for a second that teams are actually going to single-cover him, even if Backs/Semin are tearing it up.

Didn’t BB come out with something along the lines of, “They’re going to split the starts until they show me who should be the #1 guy”?
Maybe Varly has made that decision with poor play? (side note: my “P” key is gone all wonky and I really have to mash on it to get it to register, any computer guys out there got a suggested fix?)
Anyway, I’m beginning to take BB’s public (that damned “p” is driving me nuts) ronouncements with a grain of salt…

Yep:
“Whoever it is, the first two [goalies], will play very even over the first 30 or 40 games. And then somebody is going to take over like two years ago, after the trade when [Cristobal] Huet and Olie [Kolzig] were here and Huet took over.”
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I think it’s too early to say the preseason plan’s been ditched. Theo played very well on Saturday night, so he’s rewarded with another start. If Varly plays well when he gets back in there, I’d hope he’s given the same kind of reward.
I sure hope this is what’s going on, as opposed to our head coach getting jumpy and reactionary very early in the season.

I also recall BB saying something to the effect that he was emphatically NOT going to “ride the hot hand” or something of that nature.
What you propose is, essentially, riding the hot hand. Not that I think you’re wrong. In fact, I suspect you’re right.
I’m just surprised to see “the plan”, as elucidated prior to the season, has been junked so quickly.

I think it was the start of the third. Semin was replaced by BMo on the PP unit and skated on the second line. Ovie, Backstrom, and Knuble were in together for a brief moment. After that, everything was back to normal.

If you play fantasy, don’t forget to set your rosters before the early-ass games this afternoon.
Maybe play with an edge, be a little more physical -- maybe be more of a prick out there.

I don’t get it off, so I’m not really sure what you are talking about.
I’m sitting in a near empty office building on 7th waiting for 5 to roll around so I can head to Clyde’s before the game.
A reminder for those that care, the Yellow and Green lines are shutdown today at Gallery Place, I wouldn’t depend on Metro to get you here in time for the game if you are coming from SE or Alexandria.
the yellow line has been re-routed to following the blue line past the Pentagon and ending at Stadium-Armory, so coming from Alexandria isn’t too bad. Its us just green liners who are really screwed.
If you come in from Greenbelt / College Park, transfer at Fort Totten to the red line and get off at Judiciary Square. If you come out on the Law enforcement Memorial side, it puts you in sight of the Verizon Center.

I don’t get it off either, which is why I’m awake and commenting.

…the scratches will be Jeff Schultz…
I just don’t get it…
"You're gonna eat that g**d**n Koho, three!"
I don’t think there’s any way that Schultz is on the trade list (at least I hope not). But it still baffles me that Erskine’s playing ahead of him.

Nah. Only reason I can think of is a possible need for a glove-dropper.

And I just c ontinue to agree that this is a good reason for playing time. Erskine just doesn’t rank any higher than 7 on the list of guys on our blue line right now. And, despite a few glaring errors by 89 on Saturday, I’d rather see him out there.

Schultz isn’t on the short list to be traded?
At his age, productivity, position, and price, I think he’s an asset the team wants to hang on to.
I understand the hypothesis that the Caps are showcasing D in the hopes of a trade, but at what point do you start playing for points/the standings?
To me January is too late. I’m not saying the apocalypse is upon us, but it’d sure be nice to see some stability with the D pairings….which IMO are infinitely more important than the forward line combos. I understand that the regular season doesn’t mean much anymore, but for Schultz to have played in half the games as Erskine/Sloan is inexcusable…
Young players gotta play. How’s Schultz supposed to develop if he doesn’t get into any games?
Free Jeff Schultz!

Someone needs to photoshop his Scarlett Ice pic behind bars.
And “Free Jeff Schultz” works for everyone – the Schultz lobby want him freed, the anti-Schultz lobby figures that to be a reasonable asking price for his services.

Boudreau said he’s talked to minor penalty repeat offenders: "I just hope it doesn’t happen again."
Oh, cool. Hope. I feel better now.

Off topic, sort of, but I think this the best place for it. The ticket exchange doesn’t seem like the right place.
I have two tickets to the season ticket holder party. We’ve decided that it just doesn’t seem worth the schlep to Six Flags. I’m totally not into roller coasters, and Kettler is way closer to my home than Six Flags, if all I’m going for is autographs. So, either someone convince me by tomorrow that there’s a good reason for me to go, or the tickets might be yours if you can get to Tysons Corner to pick them up.
