About 45 minutes of wild speculation.

At least he can get some aspirin for those headaches

False alarm, Tarik is reporting it’s because Shultz is hurting and Alzner will be in the lineup.

by Mobsky on Jan 9, 2009 11:12 AM EST reply actions

Also worth noting, Tarik is reporting Fedorov and Fleischmann look ready and if that’s the case, Nylander will most likely be a scratch.

He’s here at least until Wednesday….come on GMGM…work a trade!

Better idea: email the Caps PR or gameday staff and suggest the do something on the big screen to get things going.

Despite the fact that it allows us to keep Alzner, I say this in all seriousness: Keep these guys who can’t stay healthy on LTIR an extra month until they are absolutely 100% healthy. I’m sick of Poti being hurt, he wasn’t right most of last year and I don’t want to see that in the playoffs again. Same with Feds, he came back too soon the first time and I would have sat him an extra 2-4 weeks just to make sure the same mistake is not being made.

Fehr

I really hate that they are scratching Fehr. Even though he hasn’t scored a lot, he has been playing very well with lots of speed and energy.

by Feeshbate on Jan 9, 2009 12:02 PM EST reply actions

I’ve felt like Fehr was the odd man out a lot of the time, but it’s really a numbers game. If you keep him in the lineup you have to scratch someone else and I’m not sure who that would be.

by David Getz on Jan 9, 2009 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

Eric needs to start making his own destiny. He’s been doing everything with the puck except put it in the net. His skating has been very strong, he’s outmuscling guys in the corners and he’s getting great looks with the puck, it’s just not going in. If the first three elements weren’t happening, I’d say he might be over his head, but he never looks over-matched out there. I’m confident his time will come because if you look at his history, in his second full season at every level he’s blossomed into a big time scorer. It took Flash a while. I see the same with Fehr.

by b.orr4 on Jan 9, 2009 1:11 PM EST up reply actions

agreed—he needs to hammer about 200 pucks a day into the net. He has the tools.

by bigonetimer on Jan 9, 2009 1:50 PM EST up reply actions

Looks like Theodore starts tonight, Schultz is out, Sloan is in (and takes Schultz’ spot), Nyls and Fehr are healthy scratches. Shame, I like Fehr.

Also, lines are interesting:

8-19-28
14-91-25
21-39-17
87-15-10

89-52
27-23
26-62

Even with Schultz out

Bruce is still not putting Green and ShaMo back together….. very odd that.

by Wisper on Jan 9, 2009 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

My guess is that it’s because he doesn’t want to disrupt the palindrome, which has been playing very well lately. The fewer disruptions to the lineup now, the better. So let’s just hope Sloan can handle Green getting himself out of position — BB isn’t afraid to put his callsups on the block.

Also, Green/Mo wasn’t all that in the first part of the season, if you recall. Good last year, but I think that Mo’s ego takes hold when he’s paired with Green, and he messes up in positioning. Just a theory, mind, and worth precisely one McDonald’s french fry, but there it is.

by gotsparkly on Jan 9, 2009 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

How much did we see Green/Mo?

Mo went out with a groin pull early and the game he returned was the Kings game, which was the first game Green missed after getting Prongered into the glass in Anaheim. They haven’t been back together since.

Green jumps out of position because Bruce tells him to. He has the green light (no pun intended) to pinch in and shoot at will. It takes another true D-Man to know how to cover the line when you see it happen. Mo could do it. Schultz seemed able to handle it.

Now Sloan?

by Wisper on Jan 9, 2009 1:34 PM EST up reply actions

Guess we’ll find out. :)

by gotsparkly on Jan 9, 2009 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

Very good, that, in my opinion. It’s not really odd because he’s been maintaining defense pairings constant. When guys have come up from Hershey lately, or back from injury, they have slipped into the guys slot who they’re replacing. It’s worked pretty well, and I wouldn’t change that. I also don’t think that Morrisonn is the wonderful defensive presence that Mike needs. Call me a skeptic, and I know I have differing opinions than most of you on lots of issues, and that’s fine, we should all be allowed that.
Being 100% honest, when Poti and Erskine come back, I would not be upset at ALL if they just slipped into the 26 and 62 slots.

The thing that surprises me is that with Fedorov back, we don’t put Semin on line two with Feds, and Kozlov on line one. But, that’s just me. I like having two “B” lines to one “A” and one “C”.

by Whiter Mage on Jan 9, 2009 5:56 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed on the forward lines. I also like having 2 “B’s”, though it’s hard to argue with the caps’ record with that top line. I also think there is (understandable) fear that with Flash and Semin on the wings, defense will suffer.

by grapejoos on Jan 9, 2009 6:21 PM EST up reply actions

I never thought I'd say this, but...

… at least Erskine will be back soon. If Schultz really is kept out for awhile while his finger heals it’d definitely be preferable to have Erskine in the lineup than Sloan.

by brs03 on Jan 9, 2009 1:27 PM EST reply actions

You might get your wish; he’s got clearance from a second doctor and might play Tuesday.

Yeah, I was just reading that too. Thank goodness we’ll only be stuck with Sloan for two games or so I guess.

Hey, we could always put Feds back on D, right? ; )

by brs03 on Jan 9, 2009 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

Nah, Jurcina’s already got his confidence booster…
