Is it 7 yet??

Is it too soon to start drinking for this game?? It feels a little like alcoholism considering I’m by myself and in Indiana where I don’t think they know hockey exists…

Are the Fort Wayne Komets no more?

by HeartbreakRidge on Jan 6, 2009 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

Haha they’re still around… But down in Bloomington, its all basketball, all the time. Sometimes we acknowledge that IU has a football team, but hockey is still pretty far off the radar.

Fair enough, you are in deep deep Hoosier-ville, you have my sympathies! (not that Dayton is much of a hockey town either, but at least we’ve managed to keep an ECHL (‘the league with the meaningless acronym!’) team alive.

Too bad the Caps ECHL team is South Carolina, it would be nice to occasionally see a Caps prospect play here.

Thanks for the support :) An hour and a half seems like an eternity right now… I might be watching 24 players on the ice by the time the puck drops instead of 12

Keeping Alzner

Anyone think it could be Flash traded? Of all the (tradable) Caps, he seems to be the one with the most value. Nylander too pricey, Clark too unproductive. Caps need defense more than Flash´s modest production.

by katzistan on Jan 6, 2009 7:50 PM EST reply actions

I think the most likely scenario is Alzner returning to Hershey right now. I hate it, but I think it’s where we’re heading. Path of least resistance and all.

As far as trading Flash, I don’t think you can, not with him showing that he’s probably a 20-goal scorer and he’s signed through next year on the cheap. And with Kozzie UFA at year’s end, you can’t trade him, imo.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Jan 6, 2009 7:53 PM EST up reply actions

Dunno, I think Karl´s D might be more valuable to this team. Caps were suspect on D before he joined, but scoring goals hasnt been an issue with Flash out.

by katzistan on Jan 6, 2009 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

But it’s not either/or on Flash and Alzner – Alzner’s cap hit is nearly a million bucks more.

Modest production? 12 goals in 31 games = 31 goals per 82 games. That’s great production for the ~750k they’re paying him.

Has Ovie scored in the shootout this season?

by capsfan4life on Jan 6, 2009 9:46 PM EST reply actions

Ovechkin needs to bring back the giant leg kick.

Well, what the heck. We’ll take the extra point.

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

by marky narc on Jan 6, 2009 9:47 PM EST reply actions

Yeah. Was hoping for some cathartic ass kicking, but I guess not.

by HeartbreakRidge on Jan 6, 2009 9:48 PM EST up reply actions

Take the point, sure, but it doesn’t have the same satisfaction does it?

Hey, Salmon – didn’t you predict a 2-1 Caps SO win?

by J.P. on Jan 6, 2009 9:47 PM EST reply actions

Don’t know if I said 2-1, but I definitely said shootout win for the Caps.

And judging by Carter’s smile and Leonsis’ joy, I got the reactions right, too.

Swing by The Flyer Frequent if you have nothing better to do.

YEAH JT! Way to hold that left post! Three Flyers, one move, no goals :)

Theo

was pretty reliable in the shootouts last season as well. Good job!

by Pookie on Jan 6, 2009 9:49 PM EST reply actions

Doesn’t Theo have something like the 2nd or 3rd best career shootout save percentage?

by David Getz on Jan 6, 2009 9:50 PM EST up reply actions

Two good saves, and a lucky low shot by Richards

by katzistan on Jan 6, 2009 9:52 PM EST up reply actions

Matches the lucky low shot by Nylander during the game.

SPG

capsfan01111 wins the night w/ 7 points

Not counting WNH: 3 pts each for ames, capsfan01111, capshockeyfan, ChrisFoulk, me, jakeyjds, and RonLow

Pick SPG for your chance to win probably nothing.

Paging Keith Aucoin...

I hope tonight is the last we see of Nyls—he was awful.

by bigonetimer on Jan 6, 2009 10:04 PM EST reply actions

He´s slumping. He´ll be back.

by katzistan on Jan 6, 2009 10:14 PM EST up reply actions

I wish.

I’ve been a pretty staunch supporter and loved the move when we reacquired him, but 92 just can’t or won’t with BB. He can’t keep up with OV so you can’t play him up there, and spread out some of our Center goodness (read Nicky) with another line. No, what we have here is suck, not slump. Tonight was painful to watch.

And as much as I dislike him, I really respect Mike Richards’ game. Different blend of strengths than Nicky, but just good if not better. That sould be a great one on one rivalry to watch for years.

and excuse the sloppy text; I’ve been over-served

Just watched via Tivo

I now find shootout wins mildly annoying. Life is good.

by macvechkin on Jan 6, 2009 10:49 PM EST reply actions

What the hell was Semin’s problem tonight?

I hope it’s just rust. That’s two games in a row with multiple prime opportunities that he has either tried to pass or curl and drag his way around sliding defenders…with open shots each time.

I hate when our top players try to do Nyander impressions. Pisses me off.

Just got home...

Wanted to point out that it was downright warm in the Phone Booth tonight…just in case anyone was wondering (although it was probably pretty obvious that ice conditions were not great).

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
