I was watching MSG’s Rangers Pre-Game Report. Caps fan living in NYC. I don’t hate any of the New York teams either.

by Pookie on Jan 3, 2009 7:25 PM EST up reply actions

!!! you’re a female Caps fan in NYC too? Why are we not best friends??

by sonia on Jan 3, 2009 7:26 PM EST up reply actions

Allrighty!
We should be watching this together in a bar! :-)

by Pookie on Jan 3, 2009 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

absolutely we should be! :D
are you a part of the Red Skate Yahoo group? http://ca.groups.yahoo.com/group/theredskate/
It’s small, but it’s nice to know that there are other Caps fans in town :D

by sonia on Jan 3, 2009 7:39 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks for the info!
It’s cool that I’m starting to find out about the online hockey stuff, because not only am I female, I work in the arts, so all of my regular friends look at me as if the real “me” has been kidnapped by aliens if I ever try to talk about hockey. They just don’t understand!

by Pookie on Jan 3, 2009 7:47 PM EST up reply actions

no problem! i’ve met a few of the guys in the group and they’re all cool dudes. maybe next time we have a group game-watching I won’t be the only lady!
I know what you mean though- hockey doesn’t really overlap with any of my other interests, so it still weirds out some of my friends :)
drop me an email! i’m smaksimo at gmail

Ha! The majority of people in this thread are the Caps fans not living in the DC area.

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

by marky narc on Jan 3, 2009 7:26 PM EST up reply actions

LoL. Not surprised. On Mile High Hockey (Avs), the three who run the blog live in three different states and none is Colorado. I think they live in Kentucky, Oklahoma and New Hampshire.

by Pookie on Jan 3, 2009 7:35 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I know one of the guys who runs their blog – he lives in Louisville, Kentucky.

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

by marky narc on Jan 3, 2009 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

You know Joe? Are you in Kentucky too?

by Pookie on Jan 3, 2009 7:39 PM EST up reply actions

I vaguely know Joe, yeah. But I live in Boston.

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

We’ve had several hockey conversations online. :)

However, Brashear and Semin are IN.

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

by marky narc on Jan 3, 2009 6:52 PM EST up reply actions

Looks like everyone is at the game tonight. Had to miss this one tonight but I’ll be at the Flyers game at least and in the Press Box for a while too.

by CapitalsKremlin on Jan 3, 2009 7:01 PM EST reply actions

That’s pretty cool. So we’re rolling with a bit of a skeleton crew tonight.

Goes without saying, but Caps need to get a good start. Let’s face it, the Rangers are a little hungrier than average for this game.

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

by marky narc on Jan 3, 2009 7:04 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I’m working on getting my credentials to join other “big timers” in the Press Box, so it’s one big step forward for the Kremlin. Any, we need a goal in the first 5 to really set the pace of the game.

by CapitalsKremlin on Jan 3, 2009 7:09 PM EST up reply actions

Looks like Valiquette is getting the start tonight.

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

by marky narc on Jan 3, 2009 7:05 PM EST reply actions

Great to see Semin back. The way he was talking the day after the back injury, he made it sound like he was going to be out for a long time. He only (!) missed six games.

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

Rangers penalty.

Two for hooking.

Believe it or not, Backstrom leads the league in power play points.

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

by marky narc on Jan 3, 2009 7:15 PM EST up reply actions

Brash has really developed some moves this season. His rushes can be exciting though slow.

by CapitalsKremlin on Jan 3, 2009 7:17 PM EST up reply actions

he’s had soft hands his whole career—I think he’s a great match for the system

by bigonetimer on Jan 3, 2009 7:21 PM EST up reply actions

Vogel mentioned on Precap that Brash has scored a goal against every team in the league except for Montreal and the Rangers. Maybe tonight’s the night.

Hey, after nearly 1000 games in the league, you ought to have at least one against every team. :)

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

by marky narc on Jan 3, 2009 7:22 PM EST up reply actions

i believe it. doesn’t he get at least 3 points every game? :D

by sonia on Jan 3, 2009 7:19 PM EST up reply actions

Seems like it. There are plenty of power play specialists in the league, though. I had no idea Backy was racking up so many on the PP.

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

by marky narc on Jan 3, 2009 7:20 PM EST up reply actions

Gotta be a sellout crowd.

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

by marky narc on Jan 3, 2009 7:21 PM EST up reply actions

I think Tarik said that if tonight was a sell out, it would match how many sell-outs the team had all of last season?

by sonia on Jan 3, 2009 7:22 PM EST up reply actions

Dawes had to take that penalty of else Fehr would have sunk that one.

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

by marky narc on Jan 3, 2009 7:32 PM EST reply actions

allegedly…that guy has to get down a lower shot more consistently.

by bigonetimer on Jan 3, 2009 7:33 PM EST up reply actions

And considering we didn’t score in the ensuing power play, I’d have to say that was a smart penalty to take.

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

by marky narc on Jan 3, 2009 7:34 PM EST up reply actions

If that wrap-around had made the corner that would have been a goal.

by CapitalsKremlin on Jan 3, 2009 7:55 PM EST up reply actions

no doubt…and no Bruins or Sharks as starters??

I’m all for the fan having a say but not for who starts—that’s the province of the coach, imo

by CapitalsKremlin on Jan 3, 2009 8:34 PM EST reply actions

Absolutely. People elsewhere have been getting a bit down on Clark, but he’s been out so much I think people have forgotten how much value he has to this team.

dude, Bradley was trying not to laugh on the bench XD

by sonia on Jan 3, 2009 8:57 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, even people in Pittsburgh who watched the Pens’ game against Florida are saying Crosby deserves a thumbsdown

for not having the balls to fight fairly or take off your visor before you jump somebody.

by Pookie on Jan 3, 2009 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

Like I said in that earlier post, he was just venting frustration. But it doesn’t bode when when your captain loses his cool like that.

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

by marky narc on Jan 3, 2009 9:02 PM EST up reply actions

Actually the same Pittsburgh dude whose comments I’m quoting actually gave Crosby a thumbs up for trying to be a leader to fire up his team in front of the home crowd. But seriously, mugging someone (McLean is a clean player, just hard worker type) who’s not expecting anything like that is thuggery and a “douche move,” according to same guy.

Semin punches like a girl, God bless him.

by David Getz on Jan 3, 2009 8:55 PM EST reply actions

please, I can punch better than that!

by sonia on Jan 3, 2009 8:55 PM EST up reply actions

Excuse me; let me rephrase. Semin punches like a bad stereotype of a girl.

by David Getz on Jan 3, 2009 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

I’ve seen those same punches in MMA :)

by toymechanic on Jan 3, 2009 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

Semin may have had weak punches, but Staal is lucky the refs pulled Semin off him once he hit the ice. Semin was going at him pretty hard.

by boz on Jan 3, 2009 8:57 PM EST up reply actions

That was pretty hilarious, though.

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

No chance for the Gordie Howe hat trick, though. He got a game misconduct.

by marky narc on Jan 3, 2009 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

No goal, he’ll be gone for a long time for not having the jersey tied down.

by David Getz on Jan 3, 2009 8:56 PM EST up reply actions

If someone can come up with a more idiotic rule in hockey…a misconduct and game suspension for a jersy not tied down

by bigonetimer on Jan 3, 2009 8:59 PM EST up reply actions

Thank Rob Ray for that!

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

I don’t think there’s a suspension, but I may be wrong.

by David Getz on Jan 3, 2009 9:00 PM EST up reply actions

No suspension, but the Game misconduct is mandatory when you lose your jersey like that/not having it tied down.

Good game tonight. My main reaction to the 08-09 Caps arena experience is how oddly boybandish they’re trying to make the players seem in all the video clips. Like they’re models more than hockey players.

Oh, and that announcer desperately needs to be fired. He could not be more annoying.

Swing by The Flyer Frequent if you have nothing better to do.

Oh, and that announcer desperately needs to be fired. He could not be more annoying.

The P.A. announcer? I love him. Plus he’s a cool guy – I met him once at a 7-11 in Fairfax and he completed my on my choice of beer.

From what I hear, Wes Johnson took a role in Elder Scrolls IV, Oblivion, and they either had him or he added “CAPITAL!” to one of his characters lines as a “AWESOME” term.

by Whiter Mage on Jan 4, 2009 2:23 AM EST up reply actions

He was in the Elder Scrolls 4 as the arena announcer and a few other guys. He also appeared in Fallout 3 (from Bethesda the makers of ES4) as Mr. Burke.

Spoiler alert

A few? He’s every imperial – which is the major race in the game. He’s also the Gray Fox, Lucien Laschance(spelling?), and all of the orcs. What’s sad is it took me until I saw his IMDB to realize it =(

I think you need to clean up your web browser cookies/temp files. TSN.ca has Caps at #14, which is still a tad low.

by hotdog88gt on Jan 4, 2009 8:02 AM EST reply actions

twas a joke by Whiter Mage—last week the Caps went 2-0 and fell to 14th in the rankings; he was mocking a write up they’d make this week after going 4-0.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
