Nice Touch
Hey JP, Nice touch with the “r” prouncing people. Was that in a rebutal to my “Have at it Chowdah Heads!”?
Your boys get to play on some decent ice tonight. I hear that the ice at the Verizon Center is a soft, rutted mess. Just kidding, the ice at the Verizon Center is awesome. I wouldn’t want to upset Mr. Leonsis.

Putting the WEC on before a hockey game is just begging for disappointment. MMA Knuckleheads will not be amused by on ice fisticuffs…or lack of them.

Axelsson/Yelle/Thornton looks like a pretty darn good checking line.

Yeah – he’s spent his whole career there. Something like 11 years? 12 years?

The Meaning of Nyles...
The boy’s name Niles \n(i)-les\ is pronounced nyles. It is of English origin. Variant of Niall (Irish, Gaelic) “champion”. Also possibly “cloud” or “passionate”. May also be used in reference to Nilus (Greek), a saint’s name, or be derived from the river in Africa. Familiar in modern times due to the character of Dr. Niles Crane in the TV sitcom “Frasier”

RE: Theodore getting run over a second ago
Whenever I’m playing goal in my rec league and get hit like that, I usually make sure I push my net off while I’m back there, so that if a trailer comes in and gets a shot off, it would get washed off anyway (and no ref is ever going to call you for intentionally putting the net off when you get hit into your own post). Conversely, it looked like Theo contorted himself there to make sure he didn’t knock the net off, even though if a Bruin was there to pick up the garbage, it would have been a disaster. That struck me as strange…although, I’m sitting at my computer, watching the game on TV and drinking boxed wine while he’s a Hart winner. So what do I know, right?
by Kerry Fraser's Hairspray on Jan 27, 2009 8:07 PM EST reply actions
I actually thought that Bergeron was going to plow throw JT and knock the net off. I thought a whistle was coming for sure. Alas, Jose didn’t help it along, as you note.

by Scott in Shaw on Jan 27, 2009 8:43 PM EST up reply actions
A penalty was called, and Chara didn’t push him into the board. Ovie slide into the boards with his momentum, Chara was given a stick penalty. It’s an unfortunate injury but it’s not worth taking an instigator over.
Want a fight that should have been? Go back to the last Ottawa game when the Sen ran Ovie and Brash did nothing.
by CapitalsKremlin on Jan 27, 2009 8:45 PM EST up reply actions
He didn’t even hit. It was a hook. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and say he didn’t mean to injure anyone, but Chara’s not really that clean a player in the first place, by all means, let Brash kick his ass.
Again, clean has nothing to do with it. It’s Brash’s job. Ovie is the meal ticket.
Furthermore, the B’s have been physical all game. It’s Brash’s job to establish some sort of deterrent. It doesn’t matter if the physicality is clean or not.
If the Caps can’t handle physical play in January, they’ve got much bigger problems than Brash fighting or not fighting.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

….
ho boy.
….if we lose tonight, and NJD wins, we lose the second seed in the conference.
I don’t think it’s necessary to fight Chara. It was a hook, but I don’t think it was a dirty play. I’m in favor of sitting Brash anyway for Detroit.
Agreed that 91 needs to step up and rally the troops. So does 17. They need to go into that locker room, fix the fancy crap, and go hard for it. With everything they’ve got. Win it for Ovi.
Lot of people say that. Started with the second half of the season, because we need this game if we’re to catch Boston at all. I’m not ashamed of scoreboard watching – the better we do now, the less of a hole we have to dig ourselves out of. If we lose Ovi for any stretch of time, we’re going to need every game and every goal we can get for the stretch.
agreed we need every game (for us to win and for “them” to lose). hope it happens every day,. and in late March I’ll look up and see where we are. carry on watching. i get puckered enough with watching our guys on the ice each evening.

he started really slow. Maybe he comes from the Peter Bondra school of scoring. Do all of your scoring for the season in like four ten games stretches.

Yes. But Semin did give the refs the chance to make the call.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
The Caps D do a poor job of recognizing time and space on the PK. They must do a better job of knowing when they have time to clear.
Part of that has to do with having such a crappy PK (and it’s chicken-or-egg) – they feel they don’t have time, so they rush and don’t clear, etc.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

More horrendous officiating
What surprise. We won that game in regulation 2-1, fairly. Thanks officials, yet again your inability to call a game fairly has shit upon the capitals.
What Caps game DOESN’T have horrendous officiating?
by Scrabbleship on Jan 27, 2009 9:36 PM EST up reply actions
The Green goal was, in essence, a PPG, though (1 second after the penalty expired, and the guy wasn’t back in the play).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Counting how many PPs the caps had doesn’t account for BAD CALLS. If Boston, a team that is constantly taking little cheap shots, gets called for their dirty play, then that’s their own fault. If the caps get called for HOOKING (see: whenever you want a penalty called, call it hooking, whether it was or not) when THE PLAYERS’ HANDS WERE TIED TO THE BOARDS THUS MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE, that’s bad officiating. Legit penalties are legit penalties, but let’s be fair… the caps aren’t even CLOSE to a dirty team, they don’t deserve half the penalties that are levied on them.
I agree, the one against Nyls was junk, but the high sticking that Semin took was crap too… since Laich clipped a guy right before that. I didn’t think that the reason that caps lost this game was because of bad officiating. Bad officiating is mostly about calling stuff and making it compeltely uneven. Bad calls went both ways tonight.
If you guys had asked me before the game if I would take a point tonight or risk not getting any I would have taken the point
PK at the end
Did anyone else notice that the Caps were playing an inverted triangle PK at the end? That’s usually the formation for 5-3s, no for 4-3s.
That goal happened in part because the defenseman down low was left to guard two forwards. That’s a stupid place to create a two on one. They should have left two guys down low and left the open man at the point.
The 4-4 overtime won’t happen in the playoffs, but it seems silly not to practice this sort of thing for the regular season.
Well, if you go to the regular diamond, you’re inviting the 105+ mph slapper. Pick your poison, I suppose.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
True, but...
Chara’s shooting percentage=8.6%
Krejci’s=20.2
Savard’s=13.1
This isn’t to say that they’re better players, just that shooting from down low is inherently a higher percentage chance than point shots.
Almost 800 comments, guys, why do I care, eh, just fun having a cool community to enjoy games with.
