He did a heck of a job shadowing Mario in that one series we won against the Pens. I think that was the series where Mario got so frustrated he attacked Krygier with multiple cross checks, even after he knocked him to the ice. Anybody not named “mario” would have gotten a suspension for that, but Lemieux escaped with only a game misconduct.
I remember a quote from Krygier alluding to Marios special treatment. “…but he’s Mario Lemieux, I’m Todd Krygier…who the heck am I”
I thought that happened a couple of years later….was that the 4OT game? I seem to recall Mario getting thrown out of that one, though he might have been out of the league that year.
My memory of the specifics fades, but my memory of what a human piece of shit Lemieux (the player) was never will.
The thing I remember the most about that series was Joe Reekie (of all people!!!) scoring both goals in game six.
I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.
I remember that one… he scored one early on, and then got a 180 foot empty netter when he was just flinging it out of the zone on the backhand. Someone in the media (from ESPN I think) asked if he was aiming for the goal, and Reekie, being as deadpan as ever looked him in the eye and said something about practicing his 180 foot backhand shot just the other day.
The Caps regular media laughed, and the ESPN guy was sort of non-plussed…

Two words: “Class act”
Really classy player, always gave everything he had. I still remember after he announced that he would be retiring at the end of his last season to go coach at Notre Dame, the Caps played the Islanders. After the game, Ray Ferraro calls Poulin over and congratulates him, shakes his hand and wishes him the best. Very rare when an opposing player comes over to you after a game, but Poulin was class all the way.
Before the Coming of Cassidy...
McPhee publically said that he had a coach in mind to take over for Ron Wilson. The coaching search only occurred when that coach turned it down. Supposedly, the guy McPhee asked was Dave Poulin.
Probably one look at the lockerroom did it.
