The continued puckering-up of the Canadian hockey media
From TSN's Darren Dreger on Whiny Diver missing the all-star game:
"In his heart, Sidney Crosby knew he had to be in Montreal to help prop up the National Hockey League and show that the Pittsburgh Penguins are well represented.
But Crosby took some heat. There was a lot of pressure on himself and the Pittsburgh Penguins encouraging him to do what was right for his body and his organization in the second half."
Aw, he has such a good heart...
Reality check: Who cares? There are 40 other all-stars there, including a whole bunch of NHLers who don't sucker-punch guys in the 'nads and who don't instigate fights by jumping guys while wearing a visor. Why would the NHL want to be represented by that kind of child?

rec’d, great find Tyler.
Frankly I’d like to see him at the ASG but if he’s not there, then oh well. It’s not like he was going to do anything great anyway, I mean he’s dead wood after all. :)

He’s not dead wood, he’s just roughly Marc Savard-ish, which doesn’t merit the treatment he gets from PIT fans, the .ca press, etc.
I was just joking on the Semin interview but yeah I agree with you and the Savard comparison.

Marc Savard: 0 scoring titles and MVPs in his 11 NHL seasons.
But thanks for the continued conversation about Crosby. This truly shows the zeitgeist of why he is the premier player in the league.
Did you just say “premier player in the league?” HA! He’s not even the premier player on his team!
I’d take Marc Savard’s very-close-to-Whiny-Diver stats, and save $3.7M under the cap, thanks very much. Meanwhile, enjoy having Matt Cooke on your top line. Imagine what that $3.7M would get you… ;-)

I won’t take Marc Savard at all. Fuck that guy.
Football's boring. Get over it.

You clearly posted this before his beautiful give-and-go with Ovie last night ;-)

It’d be impossible to spoil something I couldn’t care less about to begin with – AO’s absence wouldn’t spoil the ASG for me…

I posted that before reading the article.
WHAT THE FUCK?!? does not begin to explain my dismay over this. Good GOD. Sidney Crosby is going to be hurt. LET’S CANCEL THE FUCKING SEASON! He can’t play! Let’s cancel EVERY GAME until he can come back.
We played PLENTY of all-star games where the league’s sixth best player couldn’t make it. Facts are, the top-five NHLers of this year will be there, no(In no particular order, Malkin, Ovechkin, Iginla, Mason[Albeit YoungStars], and Thomas)?
Get the fuck over Sidney Crosby. PERIOD. There are, not including healthy scratches/injured players, 600 players in the NHL. Sidney Crosby is not so much media that 599 other players have to put up with this dreck that we get thrown down our throats. If Ovechkin couldn’t go, no one would talk about how it would be worthy of cancelling the all star game. Hell, if one of ANY OTHER of the 599 players couldn’t go, we’d hear nothing of it.
Please, for the love of God, STOP IT.
Football's boring. Get over it.
dunno about all this
Crosby’s absence doesn’t diminish the game, but it would be something to see 8 and 87 dangle together for a shift.
I’m mostly numb to the guy at this point. He’s an awesome C, but too much of a complainer, particularly for a team captain. Yet the NHL (and thus the press) are clinging to the uniqueness of his celebrity out of what, desperation? 87 focus has contributed to deadened senses to most of the prodigious remaining talent. What if the kid, God forbid, has a career ender? What’’s the NHL’s backup plan then?
My guess is still record TV ratings this year, in spite of His absence. Maybe there’s a silver lining for the league. One thing the NFL does well is market its players, plural. Not just one dude, especially one who has shown that he doesn’t have the biggest chops.
Everyone getting so worked up about the NHL and their their love for Crosby is laughable.
He can play. He cares about the game and where its going. He understands that he needs to press flesh this weekend and should be there even if he doesn’t want to play.
And the fact that the NHL loves him more than our superstar just shouldn’t matter at all. Once Ovi has a cup and Sidney doesn’t we can all just laugh.
Once Ovi has a cup and Sidney doesn’t we can all just laugh.
That’s really what it all comes down to. Canada isn’t going to forget about Crosby and that means the NHL never will, but the primary way to prove that Ovi is better (although that is pretty much universally acknowledged at this point) is for the Caps to win more cups than the Pens in their careers.
I know as Caps fans it’s easy to fixate on Crosby and resent him because he’s both Penguin and punk, but he’s not worth the hatred and hand-wringing. Thankfully the Wings beat them last year and they seem like they have regressed. Save the hate for Briere, a guy that really deserves it.
