The Jeckyl and Hyde of Alexander Semin, from OFB
"I'm of the opinion that Alexander Semin cannot finish his NHL career in Washington absent a marked maturation away from his injurious lapses of senselessness."

I just posted this in the OFB comments but it struck me enough to mention here. Semin’s points-per-game (1.36) are higher than anyone’s but Malkin’s (among guys with a meaningful number of games). And before someone says it’s all assists, his goals per game (0.6) trail only Ovechkin and Carter.
Stats aren’t the whole story, but they corroborate the fact that Semin has been a monster this year, the occasional awful penalty aside.
Further to that end, take away the Staal “fight” and only 1/4 of Semin’s PIMs have come in the third period of games. He has committed one minor penalty when the Caps were trailing (four when tied and seven when winning). He has scored 4 goals in the last 5 minutes of games, and has more 3rd period goals than he has 1st or 2nd period tallies.
Dude’s clutch. Yeah, he needs his head straightened out now and again, but I’m certainly not ready to toss him under any bus yet. What he needs is maturity and experience, and those pretty much only come via maturing and experiencing. And Fedorov-ing.
