Thursday Free For All
I spent a lot of time last night crunching numbers to prove a point that the numbers ended up not proving, then Lost crept up on me, and well... you guys get what you pay for today.
It's on you today to bring an interesting stat, thought or question to the table to keep this thread going until something more interesting comes along. Here's my first contribution:
- The Caps are 8-1-0 when John Erskine gets 17:45 or more of ice time in a game and 1-3-2 when he plays and gets less than 15:59.
See how easy that was? Now it's your turn.
Oh, and Happy First Birthday to my boy Joey. Man, how time flies.

1) “Nylander spins” LOL Yes, that guy can go in circles and go nowhere better than anyone in the league
Heh. Actually, I was trying to “prove” that Erskine is more effective with time off and thus the Caps should give him some breaks between now and April.
I still believe that they should – because of the stylf of game he plays, he’s always hurt even when he’s not injured – but the numbers really didn’t bear out that he performs any better when fresh (though I think our eyes can tell us that since returning from six weeks off, he’s looked relatively great).

I thought Boudreau was a little batty when he put Erskine on the top line. Little did I know that he just crunched the numbers!
Seriously, though, I’ve been very impressed since his return after dogging him some, and I like JP’s idea. We definitely need Erskine for the playoffs – he’s the only physical D man we have (for now).
Happy Birthday to Joey.
Time does fly, my oldest is now 5 and the youngest 14 months. Doesn’t seem like its possible.
Congrats to you and Mrs. JP. That first year is both exciting and hard. I’ll toast the whole family this evening.

End of 2nd Period Penalties
I sensed a common thread at one point of the Caps going into the third on the PK. Is there a quicker way to get this stat than shifting through the box scores of every game thus far?
Backstrom FO% and Caps Record
When Backstrom has won 50.0% or more of his faceoffs, the Caps are 14-4-1.
When Backstrom has won less than 50.0% of his faceoffs, the Caps are 15-11-2
What’s more concerning, is that the Backstrom has only once in the last 19 games gone over 50. To be fair, he hit 50 three times during that span. Additionally, the Caps’ record during those 19 games is 14-5-0.
Didn’t triple check my numbers there but they seem to add up correctly.

Backstrom
With all the praise we see for Backstrom and comments how he gets many of his points from setting up Ovechkin I found this interesting to see -
Of his 36 assists (in 48 games) only 12 have been on Ovechkin goals. And of those 12 assists 8 have been primary assists and 4 secondary.
And of his 12 goals Ovechkin has assisted on 8 of them.
To me it shows how important Backstrom is to the team as a whole, especially on the power play, and how he isn’t relying on Ovechkin to get his points.
Interesting Stat
Ovechkin has contributed offensively on the scoresheet just once at even strength in the last 8 games.
The Capitals are 4-4-0 in these games
