Aw, crap...
…it’s on Versus. I wish they’d just save some money and pick up whatever feed is coming out of Canada. It’s games like this I wish I had two screens so I could have the Wii on de odder TV.
Versus video quality seems better than CSN, usually, although I haven’t watched much on Versus this year. Still getting JoeB though, no?
My Versus feed is always flush white, it’s hard to see anything.

my wish for the next home game
Those people in section 407 that scream out “Time for a shorty.” during the PK need to stop. The PK is abysmal, and that just irritates me.
while agree, so long as they are cheering for the Caps, just let it be.

I think the statistics speak for themselves. The Caps PK is what, nine percentage points better with him in the lineup? I don’t know who called him a savior (other than you), but the stats make a strong argument as to his value.
Here are those numbers as of Friday:
81.3% with, 73.8% without
53.9% on SH faceoffs with, 46.3% without

I’m hoping Fehr is having a Flash-like drought, except he breaks out of it instead of spending a whole season in it.
by CapitalsKremlin on Jan 20, 2009 8:49 PM EST up reply actions
Fehr needs to be more consistent, that’s all. There have been games when he was one of the Caps bestg players. Others when he’s been, er………..just there. Clark has been consistently poor all season (for whatever reason, be it legit or not). As I see it, Fehr has more of an upside.

Alzner’s shot is… almost a reverse weapon. It gets blocked so often that it’s BEGGING to go the other way 2-on-1. And he gets little on it. And he gets it off slowly. Off-season area of focus for him.

Frankly you’d probably see the biggest boost. SBN is basically a chat room for games, and with all respect to OFB and Peerless, they don’t have the ease of use for commenting.

That’s what I dig most about this platform – easy to comment and easy for you to talk about whatever you want to talk about via FanPosts and FanShots.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Yeah, I definitely like the new digs, I just wish it took on multiple team blogs so it became more of a network, but it’s not like that doesn’t exist already. Having all the blogs in one place would be nice.

Okay guys, are we going to make an effort to help Ovie win the Breakaway challenge?

Given the sham that was voting for starting lineups, he could come out, trip over his skates, fall over backwards and have the puck go up his (backside) and I’d still vote for him.

Yeah but I imagine that Crosby or Kovalev will do just that and win

Getting close to Ovie-time, aka, the last five minutes of the game. He’s got something like 10-12 goals in that time frame.

Yeah I posted that over at CK awhile back and I still have trouble believing it when I say it.

I’d rather a win than a silly instigator penalty that would put our PK on the ice.

It’s a loss that’s pretty easy to diagnose.
I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.
Yup. It’s this simple – 0 even strength goals against in the last three games.

If that wasn’t the biggest crock of shit ever. Enjoy your gift, Ottawa, you still fucking suck.
J.P. you seem to be the guy who always has the info, how much did those guys place on Ottawa?
let ’em stew for five days. think about leaving two points out there agaisnt the #13 team in the effing conference.
by CAPS NEWS NETWORK on Jan 20, 2009 10:05 PM EST reply actions
jobbed by the refs? did you SEE Semin’s trip? the only people they have to blame are themselves. Green took a bad penalty in the first leading to a PP goal—Semin with the trip. just sloppy.
by CAPS NEWS NETWORK on Jan 20, 2009 10:08 PM EST up reply actions
Did you SEE the game?
Like I said above, that was a 2-1 game. Semin’s penalty? Legit. The ones that lead to Ottawa’s first TWO goals? Not a fucking chance.
Also
Green’s penalty was perfectly justified. EVERYONE should punch Ruutu in the face. Preferably until he can no longer play hockey for the rest of his life. He’s the type of player that causes Chris Simon’s around the league to become Chris Simon. Fuck that prick. Also, it was a COMPLETE embelishment and if there was EVERY a case justifying the “call the penalty as well as the dive” that was it. Yet we went to a PK. Absolute bullshit.
Green punched a guy right in front of the ref
had to call that. can’t let the ref decide what’s a dive. he needs to be responsible there.
by CAPS NEWS NETWORK on Jan 20, 2009 10:12 PM EST up reply actions
Can't let the ref decide?
There is NO DECIDING A CLEAR CUT CASE. That is a fucking dive. Are you blind or just retarded?
And on that note
I’m out. I absolutely fucking hate you people who are so quick to jump on the “this team needs to stop taking bad penalties” bandwagon when the calls aren’t even GOOD CALLS TO BEGIN WITH.
i hope you're drunk
cause there’s no need for insults. of course it was a dive. but you simply can’y punch a guy in the face and not expect a call.

J.P. Please don’t let these guys turn this open thread into what Tarik’s looks like. Hazardous quickly ended my reading. He’s an angry elf.
He’s been warned, Feesh. I’m not going to let anyone ruin the experience for the rest of us.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Let’s be honest – that last call on Semin was fine. The problem was the blatantly missed trip when Schultz was tripped behind the net on the ensuing penalty kill.
There were a number of questionable calls (And I for one thought Fisher was trying to hurt Ovechkin. I don’t think it’s sheer coincidence that he was trying to knee him).
Hazardous is very temperate. But I don’t quite disagree with the fact that a lot of the calls in this game were crap.
And, while Jarkko deserves to be punched in the face, that doesn’t make it not illegal. (He also knows this)
Football's boring. Get over it.
Bad calls are a part of any sport, it’s how you handle them. Caps PK didn’t get the job done, simple as that.
by CapitalsKremlin on Jan 20, 2009 11:06 PM EST up reply actions
Hard to get the job done when your goalie is getting pushed (Erskine did hit him into Theo, but then he embellished it) or you’re getting tripped behind your goalie.
Granted, should get the job done 5 on 5 and not let the game be determined by penalties.
Football's boring. Get over it.

It seems I missed an eventful night here at The Rink. Sorry for my lack of participation. Credit card fraud mitigation & baby bath night. Need I say more?
Oh.
capshockeyfan and jakeyjds win tonight’s SPG with 2 points apiece.
Catch y’all after the break.
Pick SPG for your chance to win probably nothing.
Oh, the carnage!
…in this open thread. :-) Not as a ridiculous loss as losing to the Isles would have been, but kind of a bummer we couldn’t take 4 points and head into the break. The Green penalty that got OTT the first PPG was a farce, but how can you hit a guy in the face in front of a ref? I was hoping he’d get a coincidental unsportsmanlike but wasn’t shocked that he didn’t.
Semin penalty late was beyond dumb. You just can’t do that.
Sadly though, the theme is our atrocious PK. I don’t understand how it can be so bad sometimes. Luck? Perhaps. But I think the coaches need to take a step back and see if a different approach/personnel are merited.
I’ve noticed that the PK’s that give us fits almost seem to be tailor made to attack our strong players. Our power play is very laid back, almost (for lack of a better term) lackadaisical. The PKs that destroy us try and force our players to rush the play, and so they do, and mistakes happen, as we tend to turn the puck over pretty easily.
It seems, however, that our PK is designed in a way that would let our PP pick it apart. The PK is also laid back. The problem with a Power Play is that the team with it has a tempo that THEY want to operate at, and they’re strongest at that tempo (See, St. Louis Blues. So much speed and puck movement), while our PKers seem to want to move at only one tempo – slow.
I think personnel is fine – but you have to adjust your PK to fit the PP coming in. You can tell what a team’s bread and butter play is on the power play. Ours, for example, is the back door pass to Green. I could tell a PK how to dissect that all day. You shadow Green, use two men to keep the front of the net clear, while using one guy to attack the puck carrier, and Ovechkin can’t get shots through traffic, and Green doesn’t get a back door pass, and the team rushes their flow.
You really have to analyze teams now. So much info is out there for the taking. Steckel, Gordo, Feds, I have no disagreement to. I feel Clark, Bradley, Backstrom, and Laich could also be prime PK forwards. As far as the D-men are concerned, Erskine, Poti (Out), and Alzner are the only three that come to mind as being able to be solid on the PK (Erskine’s mistake on the first PP Goal in tonight’s game duly noted).
Maybe when we’re looking at what we want to acquire at the deadline, we shouldn’t be looking for a “Stay at home” d-man or a “physical” guy, but rather, a guy who really helps bookend a PK unit. We’ve got PLENTY of offense on this team, but you can’t tell me we can’t find a good defenseman who wouldn’t be better for the team than Morrisonn or Jurcina for the slot we’re missing. (Kuba and Volchenkov come to mind, thinking just about Sens, for what it’s worth).
A loss is still a loss. A loss to Ottawa hurts just as much as a loss to the Isles would. Maybe more, as Ottawa has a (long) shot at making the playoffs, and we may have helped them. This is a game I’ll look back to if we miss a seed by 2 or fewer points.
Football's boring. Get over it.
the icelanders certainly aren’t fielding anything comparable to Alfredsson-Spezza-Heatley, but I agree…it’s games like this (and a few others like Montreal come to mind) where the loss of at least the regulation point leave your smarting. as i see the conference shaking out, the #2 seed is critical so home ice is secured for the first two rounds, and the third round would be at boston (whom I am conceding the 1 yet do not fear) or home ice again.
