Lineup developments per Tarik:
Machesney called up to backup Theo. It appears Johnson was injured in practice last week.
Clark and Gordon in – Fehr and Steckel out
is Varlamov hurt again or something? If so that’s a bit concerning. Kid can’t seem to stay healthy.
by Sombrero Guy on Jan 19, 2009 1:33 PM EST up reply actions
I don’t think that Varlamov is hurt, Cheeser’s call up might be a result of cap space. I’m looking into it myself.
by CapitalsKremlin on Jan 19, 2009 1:40 PM EST up reply actions
Varlamov is a little banged up – Neuvirth has been up there.

So if the Isles win, will Bill Guerin yell “free at last!” in honor of winning their first January game?

Hey JP, whats the longest losing streak a team has had? I’m assuming the Caps own it from their first season.

Stuck at work for another hour. I hope to catch up w/ y’all after I get home to babysit the nipper while his mom goes to the dentist.

Look out, Jon Sim is out there.

It just switched to SD format for me.

hahaha… crocs are way worse. did you guys see that segment on PTI about ovechkin vs. crosby? hilarious.
Yeah, I put it in the fanshots for everyone. Wilbon went nuts. Good for him, he’s learning that there are other sports not named basketball.

ohh yeah, just saw that :) and yeah, it was fantastic. i have a student who’s a huge pens fan, and i made sure to send it to him, hahaha.
You should grade all his papers…in red….not that you don’t already do that.

Or pink, and write a note at the bottom of every paper: “Ovie drinks pink gatorade & is better than Crosby”.

I don’t why the two guys wrestle eachother when he drops the keys. I mean grab they keys and use them as a weapon for gods sake…

Good first. Theo made some very good saves. Caps ought to be a little more physical, though.

Or, in the case of the Caps, you can start working now.

Classic Martinek
Semin’s probably lucky that was Martinek, a solid all-around player who will make the strong hit without trying to send someone to the hospital. Could argue whether that’s cutthroat “effective” or not, but I appreciate a guy who recognizes that he’s playing against other human beings.

We’re a little light these days (just started up here in late October … already a few other existing forums), and the team is … not so good.
I mean, everyone’s out for MLK — that’s the ticket.

On a bright note, our ponds are frozen enough w were playing a little bit of pond hockey yesterday. Might go back out after this damn rehearsal.
We “get” it as a holiday here in illinois. And by “get” i mean, they schedule the first day of the semester on MLK day, then give us that day off, and then claim that it is our one day off for the semester.

My mother has been joking that Wachovia’s downfall (She works there) was due to them sponsoring the Flyers arena.
He is just like Claudio Reyna, if you follow soccer. He is where the ball/puck goes to die. At least he isn’t the center piece of the team like Reyna was for the US national team.

Time management
After two, Ovechkin down at 13 minutes. Only Green above 15 (at 15:30). The minutes are being spread around today, which makes sense against this team. So far, so good.
Sucks when the commercials are in higher definition than the actual broadcast.

Well, 300 is still a great number as far as career goals. I was shocked to see Forsberg doesn’t have 300 yet, (although he prided himself on being a playmaker first, goal scorer second). 300 does seem low compared to, say, Sakic, who has 625 or so.
Ovie’s only road multi-goal games have come in N.Y. if my sources are correct…would love to see him net another.

I didn’t even realize the 3rd period started. The Blues game was more compelling. A couple of good shootout goals win it for the Blues.
Or he was honoring Esa Tikkanen.

by CapitalsKremlin on Jan 19, 2009 4:26 PM EST up reply actions
I’m not getting into another “Blah blah Nylander” argument where people just assume I want to keep him and think he’s the best ever, when I actually think that while he’s underperforming I still like the guy, and think he can turn it around, while saying if there’s a trade, I’ll welcome the new guy. Depending on who it is and if it’s an upgrade. I’m not about to bash the guy online for struggling. Everyone goes through slumps, some are long (Cough, Flash, Erskine).
I agree with this. I still have hope for 92.

Just got back from Nassau
Some observations:
1.) That place is filled with small children. When they put on the noise-o-meter, it sounded like a creepy old man had just exposed himself to an all-girls elementary school assembly. (And I heard from a veteran Caps traveler that the place is usually that way, not just on holidays, FWIW)
2.) Islanders fans…not very impressed with their knowledge. “I think Washington has like 40 points or something” “Number 8 is one of their better players” “[random assorted football talk]”
3.) When Witt got called for the penalty in OT, Isles fans near us started putting on their coats, muttering “we should beat the crowd” and “assume the position”. They seemed resigned to the team leaving for KC too…I really feel bad for them.
4.) Ovechkin can turn it on whenever he wants. It’s like a switch he can flick at will. And when he does, the entire building feels it. “OH NO” and “OH SHIT” were common phrases uttered in the last few minutes of regulation and OT when The Great 8 was “on.”
The keyboard is mightier.
