Strange
I was trying to find some explanation for why Allison isn’t playing anymore and a google search turned up this entry from Urban Dictionary:
“One of the illest hockey players ever to lace up the skates. He is an assist machine, and sleeps probably 16 hours a day.”
Maybe I found my explanation after all. Allison retired because of an illness that required him to sleep 16 hours a day.
Did he retire due to “whiplash” or something? I remember see him come up with the Portland Pirates back in the day.

Pure speculation
Back and neck injuries took their toll, but I think there’s something more to his early retirement. His Wikipedia entry cites “personal issues.” I’m guessing that that’s similar to “flu-like symptoms.”
Whatever happened, it’s sad, because after he left the Caps, he had a pretty good career. His playoff performances in LA were amazing.

When the planet hit the sun, I saw the face of Allison.
