Tarik quoting Bruce:

As good as Theo has played Brent has also played well and deserves a start…. Looking around the league this year you need both goaltenders….Very few teams have been able to run with one at all times so we have to keep our guys sharp.

We’re paying the guy $9 million and he’s finally found a rhythm for the first time this season. Keeping Johnson sharp seems like a weak reason to pull Theo.

by boz on Jan 1, 2009 6:32 PM EST reply actions

I dunno. I’m fine with giving Theo the night off. There are some big games coming up…

Btw, Lisa Hillary just said she expects Semin back at some point in the next week. We’ll believe it when we see it, but sounds good to me.

every goalie deserves a night off. i dont think hes a Luongo or Lundqvist that can start 10-15 games in a row. plus we have a really good backup why not play him?

True or false – if the Caps had been (relatively) healthy all the way up to this point, we’d be ahead of the bruins in the East.

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

by marky narc on Jan 1, 2009 7:05 PM EST reply actions

False – I don’t think the injuries have cost the Caps five wins.

Plus I hear the Bruins have had excellent goaltending from Tim Thomas.

by Pookie on Jan 1, 2009 7:08 PM EST up reply actions

They have. But I think the B’s are slightly over-achieving so far. I don’t think they’ll have an Ottawa-ike collapse or anything, but I do think they’ll be a little more Earthbound for the rest of the season.

by marky narc on Jan 1, 2009 7:09 PM EST up reply actions

I’m going to agree with that, but add that we’d be closer than 9 points off the pace.

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

by marky narc on Jan 1, 2009 7:08 PM EST up reply actions

False. I can’t imagine that Capitals would be able to string together than kind of run even if everyone was healthy.

Plus if everyone’s healthy, Alzner’s in Hershey and the D corps doesn’t look nearly as good.

by David Getz on Jan 1, 2009 7:10 PM EST up reply actions

That’s true. If everything had worked out the way management had planned, we wouldn’t have seen King Karl so far.

I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.

by marky narc on Jan 1, 2009 7:11 PM EST up reply actions

False

And I agree with DMG. The injuries have given us a chance to test the Caps’ depth with Hershey players coming up. We’ve got a deeper bench (that’s been tested) than most teams going into the playoffs and we know what they can do.

By North American players getting more “calls,” do you mean penalties against? Doesn’t that mean more European players mean more PP’s? It sounds like you said that Caps haven’t had any PPs tonight because there are so many European players on the Caps. It sounds like the opposite of what you’re saying; sorry, I’m confused.

If a European player is legitimately tripped

that may not get called because they have gotten a reputation for diving. We all know thats BS though because we all watched the 2005-06 ’Canes dive their way to a Stanley Cup with alot of Canadians. This is one of just many ways in which North American players get preferential treatment over European players.

He’s made some really good saves, including that penalty shot. Honestly, Tampa hasn’t tested him a whole lot.

Its two minutes off the clock, though.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

seriously, never want to see that. was watching the orange bowl, was it a clean hit?

by renstar on Jan 1, 2009 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

Hit seemed clean but hard from my seat, just awkward. I think Ovi expected Heward to keep going, and Heward turned at the last second to play the puck plus he had his head down. It looked really, really nasty.

I feel bad for both parties – it was an accident, no malice involved, and I didn’t need the recap to tell me that Ovi’s worried as hell and pretty upset.

twas from behind…

by bigonetimer on Jan 1, 2009 9:12 PM EST reply actions

yes, it was from behind, but it didn’t look like Ovie tried to hit him that hard or anything. announcers said he had lost an edge, so that’s always dangerous….

by Pookie on Jan 1, 2009 9:14 PM EST up reply actions

I think it was more awkward than dirty.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Jan 1, 2009 9:14 PM EST up reply actions

Looks like Ovechkin thought he was going to keep turning to the right and Heward didn’t see him and turned into the boards to play the puck.

by boz on Jan 1, 2009 9:20 PM EST up reply actions

Heward turned and poked his head out. It was obviously not intent to injure. I love Heward, and it’s a shame, but it wasn’t dirty.

by Whiter Mage on Jan 1, 2009 10:13 PM EST up reply actions

Announcers saying Heward probably has a concussion. Probably not a serious neck injury. That’s somewhat good news.

Absolutely

I didn’t like the way his neck moved so only a concussion is a relief.
