Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Tarik quoting Bruce:
As good as Theo has played Brent has also played well and deserves a start…. Looking around the league this year you need both goaltenders….Very few teams have been able to run with one at all times so we have to keep our guys sharp.
We’re paying the guy $9 million and he’s finally found a rhythm for the first time this season. Keeping Johnson sharp seems like a weak reason to pull Theo.
I dunno. I’m fine with giving Theo the night off. There are some big games coming up…
Btw, Lisa Hillary just said she expects Semin back at some point in the next week. We’ll believe it when we see it, but sounds good to me.

True or false – if the Caps had been (relatively) healthy all the way up to this point, we’d be ahead of the bruins in the East.
I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.
False – I don’t think the injuries have cost the Caps five wins.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
False. I can’t imagine that Capitals would be able to string together than kind of run even if everyone was healthy.
Plus if everyone’s healthy, Alzner’s in Hershey and the D corps doesn’t look nearly as good.
Good question, though. It’s make for a good discussion in the FanPost section during an off day.

I wonder how Halpern feels about his decision to not wait through a rebuild in D.C.? His paycheck probably boost his spirits though.
I wonder how Brendan Witt feels about the same thing.
I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.
Man, Steckel is practically automatic against Tampa.
I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.
5 goals in 9 games now.
He has 5 goals in 106 games against the rest of the League.

Crappy missed slashing call, then Ovi gets pinched for a penalty. Lame.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
When Ovechkin had his stick broke, he carried it back and laid it in front of the blue line, leaving it almost as if to keep a puck in the zone if it came that way. I wonder if he did it on purpose.
He should’ve taken it and jammed it up Joanette/Hasenfratz’s rear.

Sorry ‘bout that. I didn’t like the missed call.

This first period has not been a contest.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Anybody switching to the Rose Bowl?
Taylor Mays will be better than Sean Taylor. Unbelievable.

But you get to watch Taylor Mays. This game was over the second the matchup was set. Just enjoy a great USC defense.

Do the scores at the top of the game threads update automatically or do you have to do that manually, JP?

Clark started with his hands gripped in the wrong spots and never quite got them free

There we go! Finally a goal from Bradley!
I’m not keen on the goals we’ve given up, but I particularly like how we’ve come right back with excellent shifts after Tampa goals.

Gabby's putting the grinders out there after giving up goals
Tryin’ to keep it simple.

With all these injuries
We have essentialy two energy lines and its not neccesarily the worst thing in the world. They’ve been real good tonight.

They each got 5 after the fight. They may or may not take Clark in back to close up the cut.

Tripping on Gordo. Here we are almost halfway through the game and yet again we haven’t had a power play.
I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.
And don’t tell me Tampa has been playing that clean of a game.

This is the price you pay
when you have as many Europeans as we do.

I mean North American players
get more calls than European players.

By North American players getting more “calls,” do you mean penalties against? Doesn’t that mean more European players mean more PP’s? It sounds like you said that Caps haven’t had any PPs tonight because there are so many European players on the Caps. It sounds like the opposite of what you’re saying; sorry, I’m confused.
If a European player is legitimately tripped
that may not get called because they have gotten a reputation for diving. We all know thats BS though because we all watched the 2005-06 ’Canes dive their way to a Stanley Cup with alot of Canadians. This is one of just many ways in which North American players get preferential treatment over European players.

Yeah, the Capitals have played with far too much dignity this year. Better get Della Rovere up here to take care of that.
Or perhaps you were worried about the referees not having enough of a self of self importance just from making poor calls and thought they’d get an ego boost from having Della Rovere hide behind them all night?
Horrible. B/t that play, a missed slash of Ovechkin (that broke his stick in half – couldn’t have been more obvious) and a cheap “hook” on Gordo, it’s really been terrible officiating.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Sean Collins first career NHL goal.

Tampa Bay almost showed up to play the first two minutes of the second.

He’s made some really good saves, including that penalty shot. Honestly, Tampa hasn’t tested him a whole lot.

As well he should be. They’re playing very disinterested hockey right now.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Hit seemed clean but hard from my seat, just awkward. I think Ovi expected Heward to keep going, and Heward turned at the last second to play the puck plus he had his head down. It looked really, really nasty.
I feel bad for both parties – it was an accident, no malice involved, and I didn’t need the recap to tell me that Ovi’s worried as hell and pretty upset.
yes, it was from behind, but it didn’t look like Ovie tried to hit him that hard or anything. announcers said he had lost an edge, so that’s always dangerous….
I think it was more awkward than dirty.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Looks like Ovechkin thought he was going to keep turning to the right and Heward didn’t see him and turned into the boards to play the puck.

I hope this doesn't affect Ovie

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Announcers saying Heward probably has a concussion. Probably not a serious neck injury. That’s somewhat good news.
Absolutely
I didn’t like the way his neck moved so only a concussion is a relief.

Ha! I wonder how long
It will take some teams to score 7 goals in 2009! We did it in the first game of the year!
they cant get off the ice quick enough….chin up Tampa, Tavares is gonna be a real pain in the ass to see 6 times a year
so BOS beats PIT again, with their backup G…that’s a hell of a dynasty they got out there in western PA
LOL, love it. Karma is a bitch for that group of good-for-nothins.
I don’t have a problem with Fleury. The rest of ’em can go to hell.
