Ridley is one of a very small group: players who have played for the Caps and have scored a hat trick against the Caps. (Rids did it as a Ranger.) The only other player I can think of that fits that description is Sergei Fedorov.

Ridley is also another rarity: a player to make the NHL out of the Canadian Collegiate system. (University of Manitoba.)

Bastard. You gave me a heart attack. I figured he was a D call-up from South Carolina.

(Just kidding.)

Rids was a great player for a long time here in Washington, and it was sad to see him go. He was traded at the entry draft in 1994 and what made that interesting was that he was at the Caps Draft Party at the Capital Centre. They announced the trade while he was there signing autographs (he still signed an autograph for anyone who wanted one) and then he came out and got a big cheer from everyone there.

It was the right time for him to go as he really didn’t play anywhere near as well for Toronto and Vancouver after that. A quality player and more so, a really classy person.

God, I miss Rids. I started watching the team in ’93(I was seven, and we just moved out of Hellhole, North Carolina), and he was definitely one of the ones I enjoyed watching most. 17 always has looked weird on other players jerseys, and Clark had slowly been changing that.

This former-player concept is a great idea, JP...

…If I had the time I’d like to rip-off your creation and use it myself with the Cats.

Just a heads-up!

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
