NHL Radio.
Since those of us who weren’t there last night were all forced to listen to last night’s game on the radio, I figured I’d throw this out there.
A little background: I’m a Capitals fan, but I live in the Boston area for school. I almost never see Caps games on TV. Not only do I not have a Center Ice package, but my cable plan doesn’t even have Versus (Hi! I’m a grad student!) I do get NESN, so I get to see Bruins games, which is OK (Jack Edwards notwithstanding), but the bottom line is I don’t really want to follow the Bruins, I want to follow the Capitals. So when Boston and Washington are playing on the same night, most likely the TV is off and NHL Radio is on. (Unless, of course, they’re playing each other.) Sometimes I listen to the opposing team’s broadcast just to hear it called from a different perspective. I dig Steve Kolbe, but sometimes a change of pace is nice.
So I guess that’s my open question – does anyone else use/rely on/like to check out the radio broadcasts?

If I was a Bruins fan, I’d be a radio guy for sure – five minutes of Jack Edwards is enough to drive anyone insane.
That said, I’m not a big radio guy (though I do love my XM coverage when I’m driving). Unlike baseball, for hockey I think there’s an insurmountably huge dropoff from TV to radio.
In my humble opinion – and this is an original thought forthcoming – video killed the radio star. Or something.

I grew up a – surprise – Whalers nut, so it was second nature listening to Chuck Kaiton’s voice calling games at night.
Kaiton’s delivery is so spot-on accurate that “watching” a game on radio is almost as fulfilling as television. I used to kill the audio during SportsChannel’s TV broadcasts (sorry Rick Peckham and Gerry Cheevers) and replace it with WTIC-AM 1080 and Chuck Kaiton.
Great memories.
For my money, Chuck Kaiton is the best play-by-play guy on the air. I enjoy his broadcasts so much that I even listen to the between period analysis, which is something I rarely bother with for other broadcasts. And Kaiton’s Corner is superb.

If you’ve got family with cable in the DC area, you should consider putting a slingbox in their house. Throw them a couple bucks to cover the cost of a dedicated cable box for the slingbox, and you can watch the games live. Albeit in crappy definition, but crappy definition >>> no definition.
