I don’t think there’s any formal methodology, just a combination of a big draw team and a cold weather team.
So last year you had the Sabres for their ability to host in cold weather and in a venue that was willing to host the event and the Penguins because, due to the hype of Crosby primarily, NBC and Versus’s ratings were something like 50% and 33% higher when the Pens played.
This year you’ve got Chicago because the team and/or league was able to convince the Cubs and their ownership to let the game be played at Wrigley, which is an interesting angle and because Chicago’s a big market. Then throw in the Stanley Cup winners and at the same time get an Original Six matchup.
