Bears Recall Neuvirth, Goepfert
Per Tim Leone, "The Hershey Bears are recalling goalies Michal Neuvirth and Bobby Goepfert from South Carolina (ECHL), Bears head coach Bob Woods said Friday."
The moves answer the question we posed this morning (too bad - I was hoping the Bears would sign Stretch to a PTO), but there's a little more significance than that in that if Neuvirth plays with the Bears, he will be ineligible to be loaned to another AHL team this season and then return to Hershey. Perhaps at this point that's not a big deal, but couple it with Tarik's note that "Varlamov, it appears, is definitely here to stay -- at least for tonight's game against the Sabres, if not longer [...]" and one can't help but wonder what the immediate future might hold for all of Washington's netminders.
Here are the season stats for the relevant netminders (click on league for that league's goaltending leaders):

It looks safe to save Neuvirth has graduated from the challenge of ECHL hockey. Unless there’s some major flaw in his game, the Caps should find a way to loan him or at least let him play in the AHL while Varlamov and/or Machesney are unavailable.
Side note: what’s up with the Stingrays? 1.90 GAA and your goalie’s only 6-4?
Karnak Predicts!
“. . . and one can’t help but wonder what the immediate future might hold for all of Washington’s netminders.”
Johnny goes on LTIR and Joe-Zay becomes Varley’s backup.
I doubt it. Johnson has the flu and a sore hip and I don’t think either is enough to warrant keeping him out for 30 days and 10 games.
What a rotten Christmas for him. :(
All hockey talk aside, I feel bad for the poor guy. The flu and a sore hip? That’s no way to spend a Christmas.
