A Look Back at the Past Year

I found this very random blog post while searching for something unrelated the other day.  Remarkable when you notice that date that this was posted (and what has occured since).

It can be easy to find shortcommings with this Captials team, but seeing something like this can help put things into perspective.  If my math and memory are correct, the Caps were 13-19-4 at this point last season (Christmas) and just starting to show signs of life, but things still looked pretty bleak.

Thanks to all the Caps, coaches and everyone else involved for making 2008 the best hockey year this fan has seen in quite a long time--keep up the good work!

Odd, however, that his post is dated a day before mine (but I definitely created that motivational poster).

Strange

I notice your post was from 4:19 AM PST…maybe this guy was in…Hawaii…? No, that’s probably not enough time, but you get the idea—must have been poached almost immediately.

Or more likely added the image to the post after the fact.

No, it’s nothing like that. A couple dudes named Marty and Doc run that blog.

Without trying to sound like too much of a jackass, the linked to blog post is exactly the kind of thing that makes sportswriters and those involved with the team in an official capacity hate blogs. It’s just loud bitching about how the team is incompetent without any real suggestions for improvement and, perhaps even worse it demonstrates a lack of knowledge about the team. Sure none of us thought the Capitals wind up where they did at the end of last season at that point but I very much doubt anyone associated with the team would have said they needed a new coach and to replace everyone on the roster other than Ovechkin.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
